Newcomers and Major Mainstays. The top 40 list include newcomers like Rupert Grint, Luke and Harry Treadaway, Josh Peck, Tom Payne and Rory Culkin. One of them has yet to do his first full-length movie- Colin Morgan. Major mainstays are Ryan Donowho, Jesse Eisenberg and Tom Sturridge. Definitely, these three can act and play the lead roles. It just so happens that the kind of challenging and interesting roles are not yet within their grasps... [ Get to know more about the mechanics in choosing the top 50 here. ] Here's the Top 40- - - -

Top 50 status: First time on the top 50 list.
Biggest roles so far: as Barry Howe in Brothers of the Head and as Theo in Clapham Junction. Why he made the top 50: Luke plays one of the leads in Brothers of the Head, which many critics lambasted for its 'incoherent and messy second half'. Says Boyd van Hoeij @european-films.net:
While the criticism went at full-length, the film also won a number of awards from various film festivals, giving both Luke and his brother, Harry, a high-profile introduction into the industry. The role also gave Luke Treadaway the opportunity to become part of the cast of many feature films, among them, The Innocence Project, Clapham Junction and Dogging: A Love Story, where he plays the lead.
Currently busy with an important role in Theater, watch out for our exclusive interview with Mr. Luke Treadaway very soon! - - -
![]() - - - Top 50 status: Ranked #38 on the previous list.
Biggest roles so far: as Nigel Colbie in Like Minds, and as Roger Gosselyn in Being Julia. Why he made the top 50: Re-emerging as a young actor, Tom Sturridge returned to the big screen by capturing roles in a number of recent releases - Vanity Fair, Brothers of the Head, Being Julia and the film that gives him the most buzz nowadays, Like Minds. While he lost the lead role in Jumper, Sturridge was recently cast in indie drama-romance entitled Waiting for Forever. Hopefully, his talents will not go wasted, and we look forward for more casting news ahead! - - - ![]() - - -
Top 50 status: Ranked #47 on the previous list. Biggest roles so far: As Eddie in The Pacific and Eddy, as Abe in Cook County and as Kyle Dwyer in Imaginary Heroes. Why he made the top 50: With such good looks, it's fairly easy for Ryan Donowho to star as the familiar boy-next-door type. But it seems he prefers something different.
That review and Mr. Donowho's reputation as an indie made me realize this is an amazing talent and one worth watching! The Pacific and Eddy is a film that speaks to your heart. It's beautifully done and executed with much care and attention to detail. It's not predictable and it offers something new to the audience.
Aside from this movie, I came to admire the actor when he took on some recent supporting roles. Looking at some of Emile Hirsch's recent movies, I got the chance to watch the 2004 film Imaginary Heroes. Mr. Donowho distinguished himself with a heartfelt performance as Kyle Dwyer, Emile's friend and roommate in Imaginary Heroes. Read our exclusive interview with Ryan Donowho [ tMF interview ] - - - ![]() - - - Top 50 status: First time on the top 50 list.
Biggest roles so far: as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, as Ben Marshall in Driving Lessons and as Malachy in Cherry bomb. Why he made the top 50: It's been great to watch the three lead stars of Harry Potter mature before our eyes. While Rupert's role is supporting lead to Dan Radcliffe, the young actor is seriously considering other roles to further his acting career. Says Rupert:
Grint is currently working on two different films- a dramatic-thriller, with a twist and a coming of age story entitled Cherry bomb, and an action-drama called Wild Target, featuring an impressive ensemble cast lead by Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt.

Biggest roles so far: Just like his brother Luke, Harry also started acting via Brothers of the Head, playing the role of Tom Howe. Other notable role: as Doon Harrow in City of Ember. Why he made the top 50: Definitely one of the UK's A-List young actors, Harry Treadaway is certainly going to make a lot of waves with the forthcoming City of Ember. The bestselling book turned into movie also features Bill Murray, Tim Robbins and Saoirse Ronan. Harry plays one of the lead, and together with Saoirse's character tries to save their dying city. Up next for Harry are the leading role in The Disappeared and director Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank. - - - Support tMF by clicking these ads! Article continues below...

Biggest roles so far: as Sam Merric in Mean Creek, as Johnny Parish in The Zodiac and as Scott Bartlett in Lymelife. Why he made the top 50: The Culkins either give movie audiences with a double treat or a triple treat for that matter. Can you recall Rory Culkin in his role in Signs? Yeah, it's the scifi-horror film starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. That's the first time I watched the kid. Look at him now? Fresh from the critical acclaim at the recent Toronto Film Festival, Rory is one of the lead actors in the indie hit, Lymelife. Not only that, he is playing brother to his real bro, Keiran in the same movie. Culkin began acting by playing alongside his elder brothers, amongst them Macaulay and Kieran, often as the younger versions of their characters. He first appeared in a photograph as a baby in The Good Son. Culkin's breakthrough role was in You Can Count On Me, opposite Laura Linney, a role for which he received much praise and a Young Artist Award. Since then, Culkin has appeared in numerous films. As a teenager, Rory started moving into more independent films, such as The Chumscrubber and Down in the Valley. He took a leading role in Mean Creek, a 2004 independent film about a group of teenagers that plan to get revenge on a bully. The entire youth cast won an Independent Spirit Award for this film. - - -
![]() - - - Top 50 status: First time on the top 50 list. Biggest roles so far: as Brett Aspinall in Waterloo Road, as Phil in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and as Linton Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. Why he made the top 50: I have always been impressed with Tom Payne. There is something about him that makes people look twice. He is gifted with both leading man and character actor traits, if that makes sense. I can certainly see him playing the leading man in any film, while at the same time, can also do justice to major supporting roles. In his first feature film, Miss Pettygrew Lives for a Day, Tom played one of the protagonist's suitors. Even the director was impressed: Up next for the young actor is perhaps his biggest role to date. Tom is scheduled to play the title role in a feature that tells the story of one of football's legend- George Best. Says the actor: I think my next job playing George Best will be very important for me as an actor as it will be the most challenging role so far for a variety of reasons. - - -

Top 50 status: First time on the top 50 list.
Biggest roles so far: as Luke Shapiro in The Wackness, as Josh Nichols in Drake and Josh. Why he made the top 50: If there is anyone on the list that has made a life-changing decision, then it has to be Josh Peck. Sheer mental will and discipline. That's the secret to Josh Peck's new image. Can you imagine that this young man used to be overweight? I'm not kidding...and look at him now! Raised in Manhattan, Josh Peck has been doing stand-up comedy since the age of eight, and began his acting career at the age of 14 with a role in the independent film The Newcomers with Kate Bosworth. After he became a regular on The Amanda Show with Amanda Bynes, Josh and friend Drake Bell were asked to star in their own family show, Drake and Josh, one of Nickelodeon’s most popular shows. His role in The Wackness certainly put Josh on the spotlight. Winner of the Audience Award at Sundance, the movie is a tender and cool coming-of-age story. Up next for Josh are American Primitive and Safety Glass. - - -
- - - Top 50 status: First time on the top 50 list. Biggest role so far: as Merlin in the TV series Merlin. Why he made the top 50: Never have I been so thrilled and excited about a newcomer since I first noticed Jamie Bell, Gaspard Ulliel and Robert Pattinson. One thing that seems to be common to these exciting new talents is that raw, nervous energy that abounds whenever they appear on screen. That applies also to Colin Morgan. How did he started out in acting then? Not in the movies, folks, but in the theater...
Remarked Radio and TV: After studying at the Belfast Institute he went to the RSAMD in Glasgow. He was planning on taking some time off after graduating but - purely for experience - went for an audition for a role in Vernon God Little, the stage adaptation of DCB Pierre’s Booker-winning novel. “I was planning on traveling. All my friends were auditioning for something so I thought I’d do it for experience,” he explains. “I got offered the part which was a surprise. I decided to do it. The best decision I’ve ever made.I left college three-quarters of the way through my final year and got assessed on the play as part of my grade. After that it happened very quickly for me.” I have to say that a lot of times actors who have extensive training in theatre often find it hard to adapt to the unusually fast and furious pace of working on film. While there are some exceptional actors who successfully made the transition from stage to screen, there are also some who failed miserably to make the adjustment. But as you can see, the comparison with Ben Whishaw is more than enough to guarantee that young Colin Morgan will perform very ably on the big screen. - - -![]() - - - Top 50 status: Ranked #26 on the previous list.
Biggest roles so far: as Walt Berkman in The Squid and the Whale, as Charlie in the Education of Charlie Banks and as Benjamin Strauss in The Hunting Party. Why he made the top 50: The young New York-based actor is known for taking his role choices seriously and has proven that he can present us with some really remarkable screen performances. Starting with a notable role in Roger Dodger, Eisenberg went on to play one of the leading roles in The Squid and the Whale (starring alongside Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney). In another important role, Jesse stars in "The Education of Charlie Banks", the directorial debut of Fred Durst which has its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. He has also been cast in the new Greg Mottola film called Adventureland. - - -

Great list...Tom, Rupert, Rory. And then some newbies, at least in my book. A very balanced list, and as times passes, and thanks to great articles this one, these actors will continue to become better known and recognized.
Ready for the top 30!

Rupert Grint
Thanks so much for adding Rupert Grint to your 50 actor list. Often times he is left out and it's sad because he is an amazing talent who deserves just as much recognition. so glad (and surprised) to see rupert grint on this list. while usually overlooked by mainstream media, he just seems to plug along quietly without all the hype. i think as long as he keeps choosing scripts that appeal to him, and remains true to himself, he will continue to grow as an actor. he has the ability to make an impression even with the most limited screen time. about time he received a little recognition. way to go rupert!

RUPES!
SO cool that he made it on this list. 2009 is going to be a great year for him!

Thank you so much for including Rupert Grint in this list! He is, unfortunately, often overlooked and it's a bit confusing as to why this seems to happen. He's got the natural talent, the drive to challenge himself and the willingness to expand his career without feeling he needs to be typecast to get any work. Obviously, other directors feel this way and want to cast him in their movies, he's just THAT good! It's about time that he gets more recognition because he works very hard and puts his whole heart into whatever character he portrays, and it shows. So, if anyone reading this has seen him in action as Ron in the Harry Potter movies; please, go watch him in Thunderpants and Driving Lessons, and next year go see Cherrybomb and Wild Target! Kudos to tMF for putting together a list with true integrity and honesty, and having the mindset to include the much-loved and talented Rupert Grint in your list! Can't wait to see if you ever get an exclusive with him, I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed.

Rupert
Thank god finally somebody recognizes Rupert talent since everybody in the tabloid, film and award organizations always seem to leave him out! He deserves every last bit of support from everybody, more then Dan and Emma. Sure, they may be lovely actors but Rupert surpasses them by far, with how humble and un-star stuck he is. He can play any role and play it well and make you fully convinced that he's an entirely different person rather then Rupert Grint, and thats what makes an actor! So go Rupe for getting on this list, this is your year!

Rupert Grint
So pleased to see the wonderfully talented Mr. Grint on your list. I've loved watching his performance since he first walked onto the screen in Sorcerer's Stone. He's eminently watchable, the epitome of a "scene stealer." With his charisma and his talent, I predict a great future for him.
