The Middleground. The top 30 is the middleground, where you get to find out who are making headways and who are not. We maintain a rather skeptical view of some of the actors' performances (i.e. we're not yet impressed totally!). That's probably the reason why you might notice the low ranking for some of the more popular names, which you thought should have been way up there. Moving down the rankings were Ben Foster, Kevin Zegers, Michael Angarano, Chris Evans and Eddie Redmayne. New on the list are Keiran Culkin and Nicolas Cazale and completing the top 30 are Ben Barnes, Lou Taylor Pucci and Sam Riley. International Appeal. I should have mentioned that during the first time we launched our top 50 list last April, many took note of its 'international flavor' and that we feature French, German and even Italian actors. The trend continues as we get to discover more young talents. Both Screen Daily's UK Stars of Tomorrow and the European Film Commission's Shooting Stars were relied upon in finalizing the list. [ Get to know more about the mechanics in choosing the top 50 here. ] Here's the Top 30- - - -

Top 50 status: Ranked #12 on the previous list.
Biggest roles so far: as Cole McKay in Black Irish, as Cameron Kincaid in Man in the Chair and as Jason Tripitikas in The Forbidden Kingdom. Why he made the top 50: My favorite scene in Lords of Dogtown is when the Z-Boys (Hirsch, Stacey Peralta, et al) visited Sid (played with such sensitivity by Michael Angarano). It was such a heartfelt performance you can't help but feel for the young man who has cancer and is about to die. Says Angarano about his character:
Four outstanding features will further consolidate Angarano as one of today's most talented young actors- 2 of which are outstanding films in their own rights: Black Irish, in which he plays 15-year-old Cole McKay and Man in the Chair which centers around a 17-year-old kid who flirts with the law, underachieves at school, and is at odds with his loving mother and his constantly indifferent and derisive stepfather. After a banner year in 2007, it seems Angarano is taking it a bit easy, with only one notable role to date, as Benjamin Purvis in Gentlemen Broncos. I'm sure many Angarano fans expect more from the young actor, and hopefully we'll catch some cool casting news before the end of the year. - - -

Top 50 status: Ranked #31 on the previous list.
Biggest roles so far: as Toby in Transamerica, as Woody Deane in Its a Boy Girl Thing and as Trey in The Jane Austen Book Club. Why he made the top 50: Jo Walker sums up the young Canadian actor in this wonderful and insightful introduction: That role made people realize that Zegers has a lot more to offer than just playing teeny-bopper roles. He won the 2006 Cannes Film Festival Chopard Award, which is given to promising young actors for that breakthrough role. After Transamerica, Kevin made a number of films: The Jane Austen Book Club, Normal, Antique and Caitlin. We were hoping Kevin would be grabbing lead roles left and right, but apparently that is not the case. It seems he's been relegated to supporting roles as evidenced by his role in Fifty Dead Men Walking, opposite Jim Sturgess and Ben Kingsley. He already made such an impression in Transamerica, hopefully he can find another film that would really showcase his talent. - - -

Top 50 status: Ranked #20 on the previous list.
Biggest roles so far: As Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four, as Mace in Danny Boyle's recent film, Sunshine and as Ryan in Cellular. Why he made the top 50: The 25 year old Evans has indeed come a long way, from starting out in teen movies where he got noticed to being one of the industry's most sought-after young actors. As many aspiring actors know, good looks is not enough to become successful in this biz. It takes more than that- perhaps even more important is the guts to take on the challenge posed by a role or how to deal with a difficult director. Chris Evans is not only a goodlooking guy, he is also quite talented.
- - - - Top 50 status: Ranked #15 on the previous list.
Biggest roles so far: As Tony Baekeland in Savage Grace, as Alex in Like Minds and as William Stafford in The Other Boleyn Girl. Why he made the top 50: Robert de Niro personally picked him to play one of the major roles in The Good Shepherd, the spy/thriller film that starred Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie. It was enough to send us into frenzy and search for what's available information about this young actor. Perhaps the best article about Redmayne is the feature in Variety. Michael Ventre describes the young actor perfectly: If Eddie Redmayne isn't one of the finest young actors whom few have ever heard of, he's already on the short list. “ For Redmayne, it started on the boards. While a student at Cambridge, he scored a part in the 400th-anniversary all-male production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" in 2002. "There was a kind of pressure, but I was naive to it," Redmayne recalls. "Rather than be terrified, I tried not to let the situation overwhelm me. That's where I signed with my first British agent. I find his performance in Savage Grace to be one of 2008's best ever from young actors. What's a bit disappointing is the lack of notable future films for Redmayne in the coming year. Hopefully more leading roles for this amazing British actor will be announced before the end of the year.

- - - Top 50 status: First time on the top 50 list. A notable success at the recent Toronto Festival, Lymelife was praised due to the excellent performances of both Rory and Keiran Culkin.Definitely back on track, Keiran is looking forward to three new feature films for this year and the next.

- - - Top 50 status: Ranked #35 on the previous list. Commented Alice Jones from UK's The Independent about Barnes grabbing the role as Prince Caspian: The casting of Barnes – whose only previous film experience was a blink-and-you'll-miss it role in Stardust – as the eponymous hero might be seen as an uncharacteristic piece of risk-taking for the typically cautious, bucks-orientated Hollywood studio. In fact, it's a reflection of the latest trend in a town that is constantly on the look-out for the next big thing. And at the moment, the next big thing is young, little-known British actors. The only problem I seem to have about Ben is his less than stellar performance in the movies I have seen so far. While he was good in Bigga Than Ben, I expected more from him as Prince Caspian. Is the hype deserving of the talent? We'll soon see as he plays the title role in the horror-drama, Dorian Gray. - - -
![]() - - - Top 50 status: Ranked #8 on the previous list. As the cold-blooded killer Charlie Prince, Ben Wade's (Russell Crowe) sidekick in 3:10 to Yuma, Foster was perfect for the role. Boston Globe's critic Ty Burr described Foster performance as "mesmerizing." - - -
![]() - - - Top 50 status: Also ranked #23 on the previous list. Biggest roles so far: as Justin Cobb in Thumbsucker, as Mercer in The Go-Getter and as Darren in Fifty Pills. Why he made the top 50: With his breakthrough film, Thumbsucker, for which he won Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival and a special jury prize at Sundance, Lou Taylor Pucci is fast becoming a young actor to be reckoned with. Acting since he was just 10 years old, Pucci has been seen in memorable roles in The Go-Getter, Fast Food Nation, The Chumbscrubber, Empire Falls, Southland Tales and Personal Velocity. Born and raised in New Jersey, he has an accomplished musician for a father and a fashion model for a mother. Rumor has it that he has been geared towards the entertainment scene with his parent's choice of his name. Says Lou in a recent interview: 2008 and the next are certainly busy years for Lou, with seven new films, including The Informers, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men and The Dream of the Romans. - - -

I had the good fortune of watching Monsieur Cazalé in Three Dancing Slaves and The Grand Voyage. What amazes me the most is his ability to dive into his characters and his fruitful attempt to offer something new and exciting to movie audiences. He's both dedicated and fearless, to say the least. - - - ![]() - - - Top 50 status: Ranked #22 on the previous list.
Apparently, Riley will not be required to do odd jobs anymore - not ever. With a nomination for this year's Orange Rising Star awards, Sam Riley is one hot commodity. Coming up are two high-profile films: Franklyn with Eva Green and Ryan Philippe and the English remake of 13 Tzameti.

Rounding out...
...to be a GREAT list!
I just HAVE to say in response to: After a banner year in 2007, it seems Angarano is taking it a bit easy, with only one notable role to date... Mike has been very busy this year, just not in front of the camera. But everywhere his significant other, Kristin Stewart goes, Mike is there, by her side...and I foresee as long as she's in Rob's company filming, Mike will always be near her! Sorry, I digressed! I have the film Control sitting downstairs, just waiting for me to have time to sit down and watch it. I originally got it for some insight into Matthew McNulty, and now I see I'll get to watch #21 Sam Riley in it as well...looking forward to it! AND...looking forward to the top 20, of course!

Robert Pattinson
WOO! Spunk Ransom is the most gorgeous man ever.
I adore him, amazing actor too. I would have liked to see Tom [Sturridge] somewhere in the top ten but at least he is in the list. Glad to see Michael Cera. I wish the Jonas boys would be somewhere in this list.
