"...with the untimely passing of Heath Ledger, the entire tone of the film has shifted."

With all the Oscar’s handed out and the award season complete, I’m kind of lost without as much stuff to do. So much so that I literally sat here this week and said, “what now?” There isn’t much else to do but look ahead to what 2008 has to offer. Surely there will be disappointments and surprises like there is every year. I mean, Spider-Man 3 would have been on top of this list last year and we all know how that turned out, right?

There are plenty of other films that I want to see this coming year. While I’ve never been a huge fan of the comic, Iron Man is shaping up to be a great looking summer movie. Then there is Quantum of Solace, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II, and a few others. I wouldn’t say these are going to end up being the best five movies of the year, but they seem to be the ones least likely to disappoint. At the very least, the ones with the best chance of outrunning the Spider-Man curse.

tMF Top Five – My Most Anticipated Movies of 2008
By Jeremy Welsch

#5 - Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Director: Kevin Smith
Starring: Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Mewes Release Date: Fall 2008

In the face of an impending high school reunion and mounting money problems, two platonic friends, Zack and Miri, decide to foray into the world of amateur porn. Director Kevin Smith is atypically quiet about this movie, but the amusing premise is in good hands. As long as it does not fall victim to Seth Rogen backlash between now and then. Which is a possibility.

#4 – Choke

Director: Clark Gregg
Starring: Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston, Kelly Macdonald
Release Date: August 28, 2008

A sex addict who works as a Revolutionary War reenactor supports his hospitalized mother by pretending to choke at upscale restaurants to get money from his rescuers. Or as I like to call it, “the first great family film of the fall.” Choke received good press at Sundance but inexperienced director Clark Gregg has some large shoes to fill. The last movie to be adapted from a Chuck Palahniuk novel was Fight Club. If they can keep the confusing story together this has the makings of a classic.

#3 - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Director: David Yates
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Jim Broadbent, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis
Release Date: November 21, 2008

As Harry Potter begins his 6th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he discovers an old book marked mysteriously "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past.
Moving towards the seventh and final book, the series continues to ramp up the energy and anticipation. With the decision yet unmade to split the Deathly Hollows into two movies, this could be the final Potter movie based on a full novel.

#2 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Director: Steven Spielberg
Starring: Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, Ray Winstone
Release Date: May 22, 2008

The latest installment of Indiana Jones is set at the height of the Cold War in 1957. Returning to the screen after an 18 year absence, Indiana Jones returns most of the players from the original films (wherefore art thou, Sir Sean Connery?). If anyone can make this movie a hit, it is Spielberg. But arriving with Phantom Menace-like anticipation, the trailer failed to blow me away as much as I expected. I still can’t wait but I have mild reservations. Let’s hope the introduction of Shia LaBeouf doesn’t go the way of Jar Jar Binks.

#1 - The Dark Knight

Director: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal Release Date: July 18th, 2008

The sequel to Christopher Nolan’s franchise redux finds Batman now fighting the Joker. This film was among the most anticipated movies of the year before it started. The trailer was remarkable and the viral marketing was some of the best of the year. Christopher Nolan has never disappointed but now with the untimely passing of Heath Ledger, the entire tone of the film has shifted. For better or worse it is hard to see this not being one of the biggest movies of the year.

Harry Potter???
Harry Potter is coming out with a new movie? Which one is this? #4? I don't pay attention to his movies nor his books.

I do agree that The Dark Knight is the most anticipated movie of the year, followed by Indiana Jones.

Very deserving top 5 list once again Jeremy! Another obvious anticipated 2008 movie will be Twilight, by its huge fandom and buzz surrounding it. I also think Gus Van Sant's upcoming film MILK, many will be keeping their eye on in 2008 as well.

I agree with your #1 placement for The Dark Knight. Their viral marketing was ingenius and so clever. You are exactly right that since Heath Ledger's very utimely death, everyone and especially Heath Ledger fans will feel much different going into seeing this. I too see this as being the hit summer movie. I'm not what you'd call a real Batman fan, but being a Heath Ledger fan, and after seeing the amazing trailer, I'm interested in seeing this but, it certainly will feel different. Of course, this is just my personal opinion here but, I think it would be a really nice gesture and tribute to Heath Ledger, if Nolan would consider maybe dedicating the movie in memory of Heath. By Nolan's fitting words and tribute he wrote in Newsweek about working and knowing Heath, it would be nice to see him continue the gesture onto the film itself. As I said, just my opinion.

Hey Jean, glad to hear that there's someone else out there like myself, who's not really into the Potter movies/books, LOL!

I wonder what the 2008 indie movie hit will be?!
Jan , March 01, 2008
I'll be seeing "Choke" next week
I'll be seeing Choke next week at SXSW. I'll be sure to report if it's all it's cracked up to be! smilies/grin.gif

I hadn't got on board with Harry Potter until last year. Now I just want to see how the story turns out on film.

Like I said, I know these wont be the best movies around by the time it's all said and done. I too am looking forward to seeing what indie movies will make it.

It is always a great ride, whatever they will be!

nice
nice list man...agree with DARK KNIGHT and INDIANA JONES....how bout Revolutionary Road with DiCaprio and Winslet being directed by Sam Mendes....Benjamin Button...Burn After Reading!
dimichele305 , March 02, 2008
Great List!
The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones, Revolutionary Road and Choke are definitely on my list. Sam Rockwell is one of the most underrated character actors out there. I am also looking forward to Son of Rambow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0845046/), Hallom Foe (which I hear is finally debuting in the US at SXSW this year) and Wanted with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie. Anyone who has seen the trailer where James gets scooped up in the sportscar knows this one will be fun.

Umm... where's Twilight?
I agree with The Dark Knight and HP and sorta with Indiana (i just dont know if they still have it) But uh... where's TWILIGHT?
Have the mass hysteria surrounding the film, legions of rabid fans and unsurmountable online support not mean anything?
Jess , April 03, 2008
