I’m not an authority. Nor have I ever presented myself as such. The lists I do each week are simple matters of personal preference designed specifically for the purpose of discussion. I don’t base my selections on what the readers will like any more than I base them on what will create the most controversy.

- - -

- - -

I just pick my own personal favorites. Regardless of the list, it would be impossible for everyone to agree on the five selections, let alone the rank order - and they are not supposed to agree - what would be the fun in that?

With their newest film, Burn After Reading, being released this weekend, the topic of this week's list may be an obvious choice, but the contents may be the most debated yet. Why? People who like movies can almost unanimously agree that Joel and Ethan Coen have made some great movies, but that unified front is quickly dissolved when you ask them to pick their favorite. As much of a common thread most of their films have thematically, the type of films they make is all over the place; from madcap comedy (Raising Arizona, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) to film noir (Miller’s Crossing, No Country for Old Men), to the just plain ridiculous (The Big Lebowski). It’s a tall order, but after much reflection here is my list.

tMF TOP FIVE: Best Coen Brothers Movies

#5 – Blood Simple (1984)

How’s this for a debut? Proving right away that a couple of rookie filmmakers can run with the herd, Joel and Ethan crafted a seemingly simple tale of adultery into an intricately woven tapestry of crime fiction. A testament to the power of low budget film making and a benchmark regarding their ability to make classic film noir – a mark they would surpass at least once each over the next two decades.

#4 – Raising Arizona (1987)

So how did the brothers Coen follow up their stellar debut? By completely reinventing themselves. Raising Arizona is wildly hilarious, full of live-action cartoon characters, and the first showcase for their quirky trademark humor. It cemented their versatility and, for better or worse, introduced the world to Nicolas Cage as a leading man.

#3 – No Country for Old Men (2007)

If the Academy had to pick a moment to finally recognize the Coens with a Best Director award, this was as good a time as any. In their near flawless adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel, they gave us not only one of the best screen villains in recent memory, but one of the finest pictures they have ever made. It’s placement on this list is only hampered by the tenure of its existence. As time wears on, NCfOM could easily climb into one of the top two spots.

#2 – The Big Lebowski (1998)

Arguably holding the widest appeal of any Coen brothers film to date, this film is a staple on college campuses due to its iconic leading characters and their choice of recreation. It is bizarre enough for the casual comedy fans, but to those familiar with the Coens' work, it is a foray into yet another strange and fascinating world created by the brothers. I am even more impressed that this is the film they chose to follow up their previously released Oscar-nominated film, which was…

#1 – Fargo (1996)

A return to their low budget roots, Fargo is the Coen brothers’ masterpiece. It is the perfect mix of every style they ever used to get to this point. It works as a crime drama. It works as a comedy. It is as dark, hilarious and tragic as it is classic. The only thing the Coen brothers did wrong was release it the same year the Academy lost their collective minds and gave the Oscar for Best Picture to the disgustingly overrated (and inferior) film The English Patient. In a weird way, I think that adds to the films appeal.

Sound off: What is your favorite Coen Brothers movie?

what?
no one has commented yet? whatever. huge coen bro fan! although i admit ive never seen or heard of blood simple, now im intrigued. old country was grrreat, amazing. oh brother, fargo, and the big lebowski are classics! ive never seen my granfather, uncle, and dad cry of laughter because of a film before until we all watched jeff bridges in the big lebowski. the scenes were hes passed out and john goodman's character cause hysterics in my house. but, i have to say im dying to see burn after reading...by far! seeing clooney, pitt, and malkcovich in a film together is reason alone to watch, add that to the coen brothers imagination, you have gold!

I LOVED Fargo! But have to disagree with you about The English Patient, which remains one of my favorite movies - happily in a totally different genre to Fargo, so I can continue to love both of them!

Fargo kicked ass. The Big Lebowski has to be my fave Coen Brothers movie. I love all of them! But that one even tops Burn After Reading which was effing hilarious! Everyone should go see that movie. Even if you aren't a Coen Brothers fan you will be after seeing that movie.

Clarification
My distaste for The English Patient has absolutely nothing to do with my affinity for the brothers Coen - I just thought it was a miserable movie. But as always, to each his (or her) own smilies/wink.gif

As for Burn After Reading, it was thoroughly enjoyable and really funny at times, but this list would remain unchanged if it were written after my seeing it.
