With only one week to go before the release of Iron Man and the official start of the summer movie season, this week's offering of new releases is understandably light on quality. Really, only two films will be fighting for ticket dollars this weekend. Baby Mama should take care of the female audience and on the other side of the coin we get Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. (Hey, I told you it was a light weekend.) It does, however, provide an opportunity to take a closer look at a hit-or-miss subgenre of comedy – the stoner movie.

The American tradition known as the stoner movie is less concerned about providing movies to get stoned to than showing a day in the life and (high) times of the everyday pot smoker. Thematically, they are all cut from the same cloth: a laid-back group of guys are sent on an arbitrarily ridiculous quest of self-described nobility with their drug of choice taking center stage. More often than not, these movies are awful, even to their target audience, but a lot of them seem to gather a cult following anyway. I guess everything is funnier when you’re high. For the record, The Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon missed the cut… but just barely.

#5 – Grandma’s Boy (2006)

A member of the unfortunately disappointing Happy Madison family, this movie was a great deal funnier than it had any business being. A 35-year-old video game tester gets kicked out of his house after his roommates fail to pay the rent. He is forced to live with his clueless grandma because his friend's mom caught him masturbating in their bathroom and ejaculated all over her. If you can’t find the funny in that, maybe you should go light one up and relax, man.
#4 – Super Troopers (2001)

With its cult following in place before I ever watched, I actually thought this movie was boring the first time I saw it. Super Troopers is one of those movies that wears on you until you finally give in. Meow, as a movie, it is a silly patchwork moving from situation to situation, but as a stoner movie, the tale of the Vermont state troopers who stumble ass-backward into a dug trafficking ring earned this infinitely quotable movie its cult status. Meow.
#3 – Friday (1995)

Before Chris Tucker moved on to spend 10 years making half a dozen Rush Hour movies, he got his start in Friday. As the aptly named Smokey, he and Ice Cube spend the day with nothing else to do but sit around, get high, and watch the going's on of the ghetto on a random Friday in South Central Los Angeles. The supporting cast is pretty funny but the real driving force of the movie is Tucker, as is made apparent by his absence in the two inferior sequels that followed.
#2 – Dazed and Confused (1993)

On the last day of school in 1976, the seniors of a high school in a small Texas town prepare to haze the incoming freshmen and have a blowout party to celebrate the start of the summer. Dazed and Confused perfectly captures the mindset of the era through the use of one of the best soundtracks of all time. It’s fun to watch this movie now and see how many of the stars are still working today. You don’t have to, of course, but it’d be a lot cooler if you did.
#1 – The Big Lebowski (1998)

As much of a contradiction of terms as it is, this is the thinking man's stoner movie. Featuring one of, if not THE greatest stoners in movie history, The Dude abides. Leave it to the Coen Brothers to dive deep into the world of pot smoking and come out with a brilliantly bizarre, insanely funny movie like this. The memorable characters fuel this movie even more than the script and the direction do. Don’t think this movie deserves to be on top of the list? Well that’s just like, you know, your opinion man.

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay opens today.
