"...one of the best superhero movies of the modern age and the most fun you’ll have at the movies this year."

We are almost exactly halfway through the year and smack in the middle of the summer movie season. Sounds like as good a time as any to take a step back and grade the movie year thus far. This article was written last week in preparation for the end of the month and wouldn’t you just know it! Pixar had to go and ruin the party! Thanks to WALL*E my list is now in complete shambles. I know it is only June but mark my words, six months from now I will still be talking about WALL*E as one of, if not THE best, movies of 2008. It is a masterstroke of filmmaking, and not only as an animated film. I defy you to come up with a more beautifully shot and wildly romantic live action movie in the last few years. With WALL*E resting quietly atop the list as my favorite movie so far, I decided to leave the rest of the list unedited so you can get a look at the top five other best movies of the year.

By Jeremy Welsch

#6 – Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Girl breaks up with guy. Guy tries to go on vacation to get away and runs into girl with her new boyfriend. Guy meets a new girl. Guy falls for new girl but still likes the old girl. Hilarity ensures. This movie isn’t great simply because it bears the Judd Apatow label - it’s great because it’s funny. More than that, it’s got heart. At some point every man struggles with his own evolution into adulthood and this story just happens to be funnier than most.
#5 – Cloverfield

It all started with an unnamed trailer last summer in front of Transformers that generated the same response the world over – “what the hell was that?!?” Six months of viral marketing later there was no way the movie could have lived up to its own hype, could it? In a word: yes. It played off fresh wounds of New York being destroyed without being exploitive and told the story from the character's perspective rather than making it all about the destruction. Now THIS is how you make a monster movie.

#4 – Kung Fu Panda

Before the summer started I didn’t think Kung Fu Panda had a snowball's chance of being anything more than an appetizer for the Pixar main course a few weeks later. What a surprise this turned out to be. Dreamworks Animation doesn’t exactly have the strongest track record to date but by stepping up their game, improving their animation and dropping the silly pop culture references that plagued their previous releases, they made a great film. A great martial arts movie with just the right balance of comedy.

#3 – In Bruges

Hitmen with heart. That’s the best way to describe this gem from the beginning of the year. In the world of movies, where business is built on a foundation of repetition and over-saturation of good ideas and cheap knock-offs, In Bruges does its best to out-Tarantino the man himself. And it comes closer to accomplishing this than anything else I’ve seen this year.

#2 – Iron Man

Taking a second tier superhero character and giving it to a director unproven in the world of action movies is a dangerous proposition in every sense of the word. That is, until you cast one of the best working actors today in the lead role. The result is one of the best superhero movies of the modern age and the most fun you’ll have at the movies this year. So long as Marvel doesn’t try to rush Iron Man 2 into theatres too fast, we’re in for one hell of a trilogy. Note to Marvel: This movie wouldn’t be nearly as good without Jon Favreau behind the camera. You’ve got a good thing going so don’t get cheap on us now. In the famous words of Teddy KGB (Rounders):

“Pay the man his money.”

This is a sample of the best movies to come out so far this year. But for as many great films as there have been so far, there are twice as many bad ones.

In Bruges Rocks
Glad to see In Bruges getting some love. To me, it's the top movie of the year so far, which I realize is a minority opinion. Still don't love the villainous component in Iron Man enough to put it that high. Kind of a bland third act, really. But there's not a bad movie on your list, so yea!

Nice picks!
Some pretty decent picks... although, I wasn't all too thrilled for FSM and Cloverfield, but they are still enjoyable. I agree completely with In Bruges, I felt that film was poorly marketed when it came out. Nice job, Jeremy!

kung fu panda?
Kung fu panda would be a mistake. That movie was sooo bad. Just another money making failure. They're trying for another Finding Nemo success.
