UPDATES: I have been receiving emails about Kevin Zegers. The young and talented Mr. Zegers recently took second position in "tMF Poll: Young actor tMF should do profile or interview soon" He was actually leading the pack, thanks to Veronique@ KZ man of the hour - it's clear Kevin has a big following!

I recently watched The Jane Austen Book Club and Maria Bello rocks! It also stars Mr. Zegers in a rather mischievous and sexy role - he gets to romance the awesome Emily Blunt! |

You may want to explore further in cinema and take some breather from your usual Hollywood fanfare. You're definitely in for a big surprise. A lot of current foreign movies are so good, you need to see them, yes, if you have to go find the DVDs via ebay or amazon, you should! In this first series, we feature four of the hottest young talents from Europe that are making a lot of buzz in some of today's most acclaimed foreign films.

Charismatic, versatile, talented. Three words to describe these 4 amazing actors. Not only are they quite famous in their home country, they have been nominated (and have won) a number of awards for playing some of the most exciting and powerful performances for actors.
Riding High: Nicolai Cleve Broch
"I'm very proud to be part of this new Norwegian Wave and Buddy was actually the first film to make it big in Norway and to be distributed around the world. Before, filmmakers had difficulty making feature films and had to wait sometimes 10 years to make their next movie. " says Nicolai Cleve Broch.
Broch was talking about Morten Tyldum's film Buddy, a delightful comedy about a young man's struggle to find a place of his own, of growing up and taking responsibility. The film received raves from audiences and critics alike when it premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. |

I hope to stay fairly under the radar. I just want to do work that I can be proud of and make people feel something profound," says Ryan Donowho.

You maybe familiar with the young actor having seen him in a number of The O.C. episodes. Other actors may have had second thoughts about playing such a doomed character but not Ryan. With such good looks, it's fairly easy for the guy to star in the familiar boy-next-door type of roles. But it seems he likes something different. |

First on our list of upcoming profiles of young actresses is Kristen Stewart. I first heard of her and thought, this girl is fabulous, when I watched Undertow. That's another David Gordon Green movie with the awesome Jamie Bell in the lead role. While her role is a bit short, she made quite an impression as Jamie Bell's girl, whose parents disapprove of the young man. Undertow is one of Jamie's most acclaimed films and from there Miss Stewart went from strength to strength.

Kristen also made waves in Sean Penn's Into the Wild, the movie that really made Emile Hirsch a star to watch. Says Kristen on her audition for the role (the actress auditioned for Sean Penn with a song):
Music is one of the most emotionally expressive things you can do. If I’m not feelin’ it, I can’t sing. Those two nights [where she sings for a crowd in the film], something was going on. It’s not always you can give that much. But, yeah, it’s intimidating. I went in and played "Blackbird” for him. That’s a hard song to sing to. I’m not a singer. I can play it but he was really funny about it. He asked me if I didn’t want him to look at me. "Do you want me to turn around?” "No, you have to see it.” But, I’d never done anything like that. It takes a guy like Sean to make you come to it and pump out the words.

When the news was announced that Robert Pattinson will play Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, I had mixed feelings. You see, Kat (my partner at tMF) has read the book (she's actually read all of Ms. Meyer's novels to date!) and has been telling me how awesome Ms. Meyer's works are. She has some ideas regarding who should play Edward Cullen.
We're very much into the modeling scene, having operated a popular website for male models for the past 7 years [ Modelwatch: Male Modeling on a Global Scale ] and there are some great guys who could really play the role of Edward to perfection. There are also some awesome talents like Tom Sturridge and Gaspard Ulliel whom we felt could take the part and do justice to the role...
We had not heard of Mr. Pattinson until somebody told me that he's that guy from the Harry Potter film who got killed - Cedric Diggory. Now that he's been cast, we @tMF think he'll be a fantastic Edward Cullen! AND to top it all, he's also modeling, and with Jamie Strachan no less! (Strachan happens to be one of the most popular models we interviewed at ModelWatch).
Back to casting. There were similar news/tidbits during the time when Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire was into film production. Ms. Rice apparently had doubts about Tom Cruise playing her Vampire Lestat, but after seeing the movie, she decided Cruise was fine. It's great that Ms. Meyer is quite different from her fellow author.
"I am ecstatic with Summit's choice for Edward. There are very few actors who can look both dangerous and beautiful at the same time, and even fewer who I can picture in my head as Edward. Robert Pattinson is going to be amazing."

People seem to hate Hayden Christensen, we don't. We simply don't like him as an actor. In Jumper, the latest from Doug Liman, Christensen continued his acting tradition of mediocrity and blandness. He simply is one of the most boring young actors we have today.

While Jamie Bell is a different story. If I recall correctly, right after his success in Billy Elliot, Bell decided to take a different route and played a supporting role to Charlie Hunnam in Nicholas Nickleby. It's a good career choice- proving for a fact that he can act and can take on any roles. In Jumper, he is the only redeeming value in this disappointing film. |

It would be hard for an agent or a film producer to talk Ellen Page into doing something she didn't want to do. For one thing, the young actress from Canada is independent-minded and speaks frankly about her views on acting.
"When I feel strongly about something, I'm not so quiet," says Ms. Page.

With the critical praise and recognition of her latest film, Juno, it is only a matter of time before Ellen Page finds herself right up there as one of Hollywood's most sought-after young actors. As one of the nominees for the Oscar for Best Actress, Page has certainly made it big! She is also up for the Orange Rising Stars at the BAFTA. |

She's one of France's most fascinating and seductive young actresses! AND we simply can't get enough of her.

"Any film starring the mercurial French actress Isild le Besco is worth seeing. The twenty-two year old actress is oddly beautiful, without the smooth, stylish poise one comes to expect from French films. At times, in fact, she can appear almost demented. Le Besco wears her long blond hair down to her waist, has a slight overbite, often bounces when she should be walking, undresses with absolute ease, and is possession of the most genuine, awe-inspiring smile in cinema today. When the moment calls for it, Le Besco radiates such pure happiness that she makes me wonder if anyone else has ever properly experienced the emotion." High praise from Marcy Dermansky.

Right this minute, Eddie is one of the most exciting emerging actors and he's not keen on playing the usual boy-next-door roles. In fact, he prefers them dark and nasty. Reserve your sugary, no-brainers for someone else, Eddie Redmayne wants something entirely different. Says the actor:
"...Generally I play f*ck-ups, normally incestuous, but my range sporadically shifts to include Elizabethan and Tudor characters. In fact the two types aren't mutually exclusive as I've also gotten round to playing Elizabethan screw-ups. In Sundance I've got two films playing. They are hilariously different: SAVAGE GRACE (me = tortured, sexually confused son) with Julianne Moore, and YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF (me = adopted native American randy pest) with William Hurt, Maria Bello and the legendary Kristen Stewart. "
These are just two of his upcoming features. The last we heard of Savage Grace, some critics had trashed the flick already, though most of them praised the performances of the leads, especially Moore and this guy! In this adaptation of the Pulitzer prize-winning novel by Natalie Robbins and Steven ML Aronson, Redmayne plays the gay son of Barbara Daly (Moore), a young woman who married someone beyond her social class, the heir of a very rich family.

"Romola Garai hurried into the lobby of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, apologizing profusely for being several minutes late for the interview. Within two hours, the actress, 25, would be on stage for ``The Seagull'' with the visiting Royal Shakespeare Company. Elegantly disheveled, her slinky dress color-coordinated with her gray-blue eyes, Garai ate a grilled eggplant sandwich as we talked about juggling Chekhov's Nina and Shakespeare's Cordelia, her other role during the company's run, which concludes this weekend.
``They feed off each other,'' she said. ``What I learn about human nature from Cordelia helps me learn about human nature from Nina. After touring with these since January, I'd now like to do three plays at the same time!''

An actress of the highest calibre, Romola Garai is one of a kind. Although two of the roles in which she was supposed to be cast eventually went to Keira Knightley (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice), it was only a matter of time before Garai found the vehicle that would finally propel her into position as one of today's most exciting actresses. |
