Little Ashes Timeline, Part 1: 1922-1927
Written by Patti Heiser
Tuesday, 21 April 2009 00:44

Through our vast quantity of compositions during the extent of our Promotional Blitz, we are aware that their chronological aspects are undoubtedly askew. Therefore, we have assembled a three part timeline, expatiating on what Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí and Federico Garcia Lorca were engaged in amid the years in which the premise of Little Ashes transpires. The events are indicated by color corresponding to the appropriate person: Buñuel is in black, Dalí is in blue, and Lorca is in red.

- - -

Year - 1922

Early 1922 - Federico Garcia Lorca is in Granada where he is working on his Poema del cante jondo (Cante jondo is a vocal style in flamenco - an unspoiled form of Andalusian music). In February of that year he gives a lecture on El cante jondo - Primitive Andulusian Song to the Arts Club in Granada.
All 1922 - Luis Buñuel is studying at the University of Madrid and living at the Residencia de Estudiantes.
January - Salvador Dalí is studying at the Figueres Instituto in Figueres. He exhibits eight paintings in an exhibition by the Catalan Students' Association at the Josep Dalmau Gallery in Barcelona.
June - Lorca gives a reading from Poema del Cante Jondo at the Alhambra Palace Hotel.  This lecture is part of the Cante Jondo Festival organized by the Arts Club of Granada.
July - Dalí shows paintings at the Exhibition of Empordanese Artists in Figueres.
Late summer - On Aug. 5, Lorca finishes his play, The Tragicomedy of Don Cristobel and Senorita Rosita while visiting Asquerosa.
September - Lorca manages to pass all his outstanding law subjects. He decides to make one last attempt to finish his degree in Granada.
Sept. 11 - Dalí applies to sit the entrance exams to The Royal Academy of San Fernando - The Special School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving.
Late September - Dalí arrives at the Residencia de Estudiantes. He meets Buñuel who was a resident at the time.
Dali's work 1922 - Cadaqués, Fisherman at Cadaqués, Jug, The Lane to Port Lligat with View of Cape Creus, Still Life - Fish, Portdoque and Mount Pani from Ayuntamiento, Night-Walking Dreams.

Year - 1923

January - With the help of friend Manuel de Falla, Lorca puts on a King's Day puppet show in his parents home. The show included a puppet play by Lorca. At the end of the month, Lorca finally completed his law degree, which he never used.
Spring - Lorca returns to Madrid and the Residencia de Estudiantes. There he meets Dalí for the first time.
May - Buñuel's father dies, making him head of the family.
Summer - Buñuel organizes the "Noble Order of Toledo." The main requirement of being part of this organization was simply to love Toledo unconditionally and get drunk there and spend one full night wandering through the streets.
June - Dalí passes his end of the session examinations and wins a prize in history of art. He spends the summer in Cadaqués.
Summer through fall - Lorca continues writing his Suites. He also writes his play, Mariana Pineda.
Sept. 29 - Dalí returns to the Residencia and The Special Schools.
Oct. 22 - Dalí is expelled from the academy for one year for leading a student protest over non-appointment of Daniel Vazquez Diaz as professor of open-air painting at the Royal Academy. He returns to Figueres.

June - Luis Buñuel takes a degree in History from the University of Madrid.
Summer - After a visit with Juan Ramon Jimenez, Lorca returns to the family summer home in Asquerosa, where he continues to write the Romancero Gitano or Gypsy Ballads. He wrote Ballad of Black Anguish on July 30 and The Gypsy Nun on Aug. 20. He also starts to work on The Shoemaker's Prodigious Wife.
