Behind the Scenes Footage of Little Ashes
Written by Diana Fernandez

Our partners, the Little Ashes Spanish Blog posted a video of behind the scenes footage of Little Ashes. The video also offers commentary from actors, Javier Beltrán and Marina Gatell. The video is in Catalan, however you can find a translation after the jump.

Javier Beltrán - The character I interpret is Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the most important poets that has ever lived in Spain and well, he is one of those poets that is very welcoming for an actor for all the things that the character can offer and also a very challenging character. We don't have any audiovisual document in which the actor, I, can base on, to see how he talked, how he moved. Still with all his work, his poems its enough to make a proper interpretation of what the poet, Federico Garcia Lorca was. What has been more challenging for me is when I stop and think about who I am interpreting, the world comes tumbling down. Its Federico Garcia Lorca, the poet that the Franco Regime assassinated, and from there he becomes a myth, a legend. That is what has been more difficult for me. I have always tried to make him human, a young poet, with an extraordinary sensibility and from there, I start creating. trying to dilute the myth because if I don't my world comes tumbling down and if I start thinking "I'm playing Lorca, I'm playing Lorca, I'm playing Lorca" at the end I collapse.

Marina Gatell - I interpret a character named Magdalena but she is based on Margarita Manso. It's a character that historically coexisted with the generation of... well in the school where Buñuel and Lorca studied. She was very much in love with Lorca... I don't know, its like a character I think that is useful and fascinating in history so the good guys won't be too good and the bad guys won't be that bad. I think it's a screenplay about making detrimental decisions in the life of these well known artists and she is a little influential in getting them to touch the ground and at the same time make them dream more.
