Michael Martin's profile of Tom Sturridge is a perfect introduction to the young British actor:

It's been a few years since Sturridge got his break playing the son of Annette Bening's character in 2004's Being Julia. But he didn't mind the hiatus. "I want to do good stuff, which basically means waiting a bit," he says. Of course it's all timing: "If we did this interview next week, I'd say, ‘Listen, motherfucker, I'm playing Batman tomorrow!'

I've seen him in almost all his movies. While it took me about two sittings to totally absorb 'Like Minds', his portrayal of the mysterious Nigel Colbie, remained hyptonic and consistent throughout the movie. I find the casting of Tom and Eddie Redmayne to be just perfect. I was hoping to see Jamie Bell and Tom in Jumper, and anticipate another great team up, but it did not happen. I'm still convinced up to this day that Tom would have been a better David Rice than Hayden Christensen... [ read a related article here ]

Anyway, in the upcoming Top 50 Hitlist, I'm quite positive Tom will move up the ranks...

Tom's performance in Punk Rock is already being described as 'brilliant'. Whats'OnStage reported that:

Tom Sturridge, who has appeared in a few films, including Richard Curtis's tribute to the pirate radio stations, The Boat That Rocked, will surely be the new Ben Whishaw after his brilliant stage debut as the Hamlet-style hero of Punk Rock.

He has the pedigree. His parents are the film director Charles Sturridge who directed Brideshead Revisited on television and met his future wife, Tom's mother, Phoebe Nicholls, on the set. [ read more ]

Michael Coveney at The Independent agrees:

Young Sturridge makes an astonishingly assured stage debut as a slightly more neurasthenic Ben Whishaw type, with a bob of unruly hair, a gangling physical expressiveness, a deliberately shaky grasp of his own domestic orientation - one minute he's an orphan, the next the son of a thriving oil millionaire - and a neat way of knowing that he's "the cleverest and funniest person in Stockport." Aside from such acclaims on his stage debut, Tom seems to becoming quite a favorite among high-end magazines. Teen Vogue listed Tom as one of their bets and V Magazine puts him on the cover with an awesome profile entitled 'The Young Idealist'.

After The Boat That Rocked, Tom is also part of the cast of Waiting for Forever, which also features Rachel Bilson - the same actress who happens to be the romantic interest of the character played by Christensen, the same role originally meant for Sturridge.

The Final Word: Says the actor-

So many things I thought I was doing have fallen apart. Until I've finished filming I don't believe I have the job.' In 2006 he landed the lead in the sci-fi thriller Jumper only to be replaced two weeks before shooting started by the older and more prominent Hayden Christensen. The life of a rolling stone suits Sturridge down to the ground. 'This is the one time in my life where I don't have too much responsibility - a spouse, children or a mortgage - so I can be free, creatively. [ read more ]
