She's terrific in Rocket Science where she plays a student who is also the treacherous captain of the debating team. It was only a supporting role but she delivered quite a compelling performance. While moviegoers identify her as one of the cast of Twilight, Kendrick did quite a number of movies that speak volumes about her talent - two of them in particular has received raves for her performance - Up in the Air and Elsewhere.

Rising Star award for Kendrick: This award is actually a 'precursor' to the Oscar buzz:

The 21st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will honor Anna Kendrick with the Rising Star Award for her performance in Up in the Air at the Festival's annual Awards Gala. Festival chairman Harold Matzner made the announcement at a private event at the historic Charlie Chaplin home of Patricia Barry in Beverly Hills,CA hosted by Festival board member Stephen Breimer. Darryl MacDonald and his programming staff greeted the assembled Los Angeles industry and media attended, many who have been involved with the festival since it's inception. Industry executives both past and present along with producers, directors and media representatives including Variety's Peter Bart, Indiewire's Anne Thompson, Hollywood Reporters' Editor, Elizabath Guider, critic Kirk Honeycutt, and Movieline's Steven Farber sampled the featured and plentiful mexican appetizers and toasted the festival and its young star. Marc Halperin, who brought Cinema Paradiso to the first festival, as the opening night film chatted with representatives from the Belgium and French consulates, as well as sponsor Regal Cinemas. The Awards Gala, presented by Cartier, will kick-off the 2010 Awards Season on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, and will be hosted by Entertainment Tonight's Mary Hart. The Festival will be held January 5-18, 2010.

Commenting on the selection, Matzner said, "Anna Kendrick is an extremely gifted young actress. Given her striking, multifaceted performance in Up in the Air, we are delighted to present her with the Festival's Rising Star Award." Up in the Air is a dramatic comedy from Jason Reitman, the Oscar® nominated director of Juno. The film stars Oscar® winner George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened by a young, upstart efficiency expert (Kendrick) just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles. The film also stars Vera Farmiga and Jason Bateman. Paramount Pictures will release the film on December 4, 2009. [ read more ]

Critical reviews for Up In The Air:
Reports INDIEWire:

"Up In The Air" - director Jason Reitman's follow-up to "Juno" - has been met with universal praise and heavy Oscar buzz in its festival debuts. And much of it has been directed at Kendrick, who it seems didn't just manage to go toe to toe with George Clooney. She actually stole a few scenes from him.

...with "Up In The Air," Kendrick is likely on the verge of a much more significant spotlight.

In the film, Kendrick plays Natalie Keener, an uptight, control freak of a 23-year old who has just been hired to join Clooney's character, Ryan Bingham, at a "career transition consulting firm." Amidst a crumbling economy, the company thrives as they send employees to travel the United States, helping companies fire people. But Natalie stirs some trouble with an idea to revolutionize the "transition industry" by usuing video conferencing out of corporate headquarters. Ryan, who feeds off his in-transit existence (he gladly spends something like 322 days a year on the road), is horrified. So he decides to take Natalie on a road trip to show her the importance of face-to-face firings, and their adventures lead both characters' lives to significantly unravel. [ read more ]

You just got to give credit to Kendrick! Her scenes with George Clooney is not easy, but she was able to deliver the goods, so to speak. She was candid and straightforward, acts quite the professional but showed she is also quite young and still trying to make her mark. I love her voice! That's probably one of the reasons why critics noticed her.

Slash Film also commented on Kendrick's performance:

The true gem of this film is Anna Kendrick, a young actress I've been following since seeing her in the 2007 Sundance indie Rocket Science (If you haven't seen it yet, you need to add the film to your rental queue). At the time I said she delivered a "career-making performance". While most people probably haven't heard of the film, nevermind seen it, Kendrick's performance catapulted her into a regular spot in the Twilight series, and a role in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Kendrick again plays a calculating fast-talker with spunk, a character that she could easily become typecast into repeating for years to come. [ read more ]
