2009 was an awesome year for movies. It was a year when "cinema magic" was brought back, via James Cameron's Avatar, the fastest movie ever to reach $1 billion in total box office take. It was also the year when animation rule - Up, The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Coraline, three amazing animation that made waves in both the domestic and international scene. It was also the year of George Clooney, Matt Damon, Carey Mulligan and Sam Worthington. Twilight's New Moon continues to make waves with an ever-growing fans worldwide and its lead cast Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart continue to hug the limelight.
While there are a lot to be celebrated for 2009, there are also a good number of disappointments- Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones failed to impress. While it has an amazing cast, the film as a whole failed to deliver. Michael Bay's Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen scored in the special effects department but remains boring and inept. Anyway, here are the most notable movies and performances of 2009 in pictures:

Movie Review: A Single Man |

Starring: Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult Director: Tom Ford Release Date: December 11, 2009 (Limited)Running Time: 99 min MPAA Rating: R for some disturbing images and nudity/sexual content Distributor: The Weinstein Company - - -
Tom Ford’s A Single Man was a giant risk for most those involved. It was a risk for Ford, a beginner film maker and script adapter. A risk taking a staple of homosexual fiction and turning in to something possibly trite and decidedly unworthy. A risk for Colin Firth who may have alienated his rom-com following, or presenting as unable to carry a serious role. Okay, so it wasn’t a risk for Julianne Moore who has no dignity any more (remember Savage Grace?). However, those that ventured the most, certainly gained the most. A Single Man is that quiet, understated film that you wait for, every year, during the awards season.

Movie Review: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans |

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer Director: Werner Herzog Release Date: November 20, 2009 (Limited)Running Time: 121 min MPAA Rating: R for drug use and language throughout, some violence and sexuality Distributor: First Look Studios - - -
It's been a long time since a movie has left me as speechless as after I watched Werner Herzog's latest mess of a film Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans. Leaving the theatre, I really, honestly, didn't have a thing to say about it. I'm not sure that's changed.
Nicolas Cage plays a mildly crooked cop who goes from bad to worse when his back is permanently injured while doing a good a deed. The injury leads to an addiction to pain killers, which leads to coke, accidentally snorting heroin, falling deeper into a co-dependant relationship with his hooker girlfriend and fellow drug user Frankie (Eva Mendes), and engaging in more and more illegal acts. These include robbing Frankie's clients, selling police information to drug dealers, robbing and raping young adults when he believes they have drugs he can take from them in the name of the law. And he frequently hallucinates aggressive iguanas.

While it should be noted that the new red band trailer for Chloe is probably not safe for work viewing, it is because of one scene toward the end. But it is an international trailer – and French to boot, so I hardly think that counts.
Take a look at the red band international trailer after the jump.

Emily Blunt, who was sensational in The Devil Wears Prada, is not mincing her words when it comes to British film critics lambasting her new film, The Young Victoria.
Says the actress:
| "Over here, people accept it as being a love story, allowing themselves to be swept away by it, rather than getting too caught up in the details." Okay, American are easy I guess, but then the film didn't exactly skimp on the historical details either." |
Reports Roger Moore (not the actor): Of late, Blunt, 26, has made a specialty of playing Americans -- in "Sunshine Cleaning," "The Great Buck Howard" and "Dan in Real Life."

There are now five movies in the history of cinema that have made more than $1 billion in worldwide grosses – and James Cameron has directed two of them. After coming closer than it would have liked to getting edged out of the top spot last week, Avatar dropped only 10% from last week to earn $68.3 million and firmly held on to number one for the third week in a row, almost doubling that of Sherlock Holmes ($38.3 million).
