MUST SEE! Andrew Garfield is simply amazing in Boy A!
Tuesday, 22 July 2008
Definitely one of the most compelling and unforgettable indie movies of last year, Boy A is finally here in the US and it's a must see!

We ran an early review of the film some time ago here on tMF and while audiences from different festivals were clearly impressed, it's now time for mainstream audiences to have the opportunity to see this absolutely gem of a film:

*** SPOILER ALERT! ***
Director Crowley moves seamlessly between the past and the present . We first see Boy A as a 12-year-old, ignored by his parents and bullied by his peers. One day as Boy A is being confronted by three older boys he is rescued by another child, Boy B, who is aggressive and fearless. This meeting is the start of a brief friendship between the shy Boy A and street-smart Boy B that will have many tragic consequences. The two boys live below society’s radar: they don’t go to school and their absence is not missed by teachers or parents. During one of these absences, the two boys meet a schoolgirl (Skye Bennett) and, after a brief verbal exchange, Boy B lashes out at her. The audience is already aware that the girl dies, and Crowley does not give any details of the girl’s death nor does he minimize Boy A’s participation in the killing. A child has been murdered and it is not important which of the boys struck the fatal blow: they are equally guilty. [ read more ]

Andrew Garfield is simply outstanding playing the lead role. You might have wondered why he was cast in Redford's Lions for Lambs, but once you see this movie, you'll know why.

BREAKING RECORDS! The Dark Knight grabs $155m on its first weekend!
Monday, 21 July 2008
Even those who predicted that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight would be a smash were shocked! Reports the Associated Press via AOL:

- - -

- - -
"The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007 and pacing Hollywood to its biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight." The movie should shoot past the $200 million mark by the end of the week, he said.
Glowing reviews of the movie before its wide release can be credited as a factor for the fantastic box office results. But the level of buzz generated by the movie has always been very high, starting way way back with the amazing viral marketing campaign that engaged fans in tantalizing ways.

I did my absolute best to keep my expectations for The Dark Knight in check. Considering the fact that the viral marketing for this film started 2 years ago, the very notion of the film succeeding on any level due to the weight of its own designed expectations wasn't just preposterous – it was unimaginable. Yet the truth is that as overdone as the marketing seemed to be, the greatest prank the campaign pulled was fooling us all into thinking we were prepared for what we were about to experience.

Our senses are welcomed by an unknown force of emotion and darkness, the existence of which within the bounds of a superhero film none of us had ever suspected. It hits us with unexpected force and velocity. The result is a generations-wide gap between all the other amateurs and their superhero films and Christopher Nolan’s nocturnal epic of a nightmare. The breath of pride in his work unleashes the beast that has been waiting for years to break free from the Batman franchise.

tMF Top Five - Best Superhero Movies
Saturday, 19 July 2008

"This is how superhero movies are supposed to be made and its place on the list is only further solidified by its dreadful sequel that proves exactly how they are not."

Comic books and superheroes have been around forever. Almost as soon as they rose to prominence in popular culture, TV shows and movies began taking shape as a popular vehicle for the art form. Superman started it all but it wasn’t until the 2000’s X-Men that the genre was considered a profitable business. The upside is that over the last decade, a lot of our favorite comic book characters were brought to life on the big screen. The downside is that some of them sucked. 2008, in particular the summer, has been the year of the superhero/comic book movie. Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hancock, and Hellboy II, have already wowed us in one degree or another, but on the eve of the granddaddy of them all – The Dark Knight – tMF takes a look back at the best of the genre so far.

Go ahead, start whimpering and labelling the visionary master Guillermo del Toro’s latest work as lackluster and not containing enough of the creative juice that flowed throughout his recent masterpiece, Pan’s Labyrinth. But truthfully people, what does? He musters up what he can from a comic book from the Dark Horse comic series (penned by Mike Mignola) which starts out lacking a solid foundation for a complete story. But given the extraordinary mind del Toro has, he is able to concoct something quite out of the ordinary to fill that void.

MICHAEL WELCH: Four topnotch films in the works, one of them destined to be his defining role?
Thursday, 10 July 2008
If you're a Twilight fan, then you'll be quite familiar with young actor Michael Welch. But even if you're not, if you're simply just a "moviegoer", then you've probably seen him in one of his many movies. This year alone he's already made seven!

- - -

- - -

At 20, this is probably the right time for Mike to explore his options and meet his casting challenges head on! It was ten years ago when he started acting, appearing first on TV shows and later on picking up some notable roles in movies. Growing up in the biz brings its share of the goodies!

NIKKI REED: A superb actress in a supporting role: will she outshine the leads?
Wednesday, 09 July 2008
Intelligent, confident, talented. Definitely the perfect way to describe young actress Nikki Reed. There are but a few actors in Hollywood who are not bothered by playing supporting roles, much less taking on controversial roles such as a drug addict, a whore, a complete moron or an ambitious but insecure material girl.

- - -

- - -

No Need for Fame: When Jamie Bell (one of the youngest actors ever to win the BAFTA Best Actor Award) played Griffin in support of Hayden Christensen's character in Jumper, some were not surprised by such a career move. While he is often the lead in a lot of his movies, playing Griffin allowed Bell to add another dimension to his acting abilities - versatility. While critics lambasted the movie, few had anything bad to say about Bell's performance.

If there is another actor who is as confident and as versatile as Jamie Bell, it's Nikki Reed. Says the actress:
It's all about the long run for me. It's not about immediate gratification. It's not about who's at the hottest party, because most of what's 'hot' right now is not going to be 'hot' in ten years. And I'd rather be well-respected in all areas than noticed when I walk down the street as the girl who was at that party instead of the girl who wrote this film and is now producing it.
Young actresses like Nikki Reed are often hungry for publicity - some shave their heads to be in the news, some drink and drive and take drugs, others pretend to be victims of sex scandal tapes (while at the same time distributing the alleged 'scandal footages' and uploading them to Youtube).

SITE OF THE MONTH: Jim Sturgess dot Org
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

"I'll admit to the fact that I'm a sucker for singers, and when said singers are singing songs by my all time favorite band, there is an added bonus. I absolutely adored his performance in Across the Universe, and I knew 100% that he was going to take off - especially with the young ladies!"

Finally! We're featuring an awesome fansite that is not only pleasing to the eye, it also offers so much to the fans, and while you might still think Jim Sturgess is not an awesome actor, once you've visited this amazing site, you'll think again. tMF is proud to launch our site of the month - Jim Strugess dot Org!

- - -

- - -

What's the story behind the Jim Sturgess.org website? Who are the people working towards its success?

Ali: JimSturgess.org was an idea I got directly from seeing Across the Universe. I realized that Jim was going to get a HUGE following the second the movie was over. I had joked with my friends about making a site, but in reality I really did want to make one. From the very beginning I had the goal of seeing how far I can take it. I had every intentions of making it the best Jim Sturgess site out there, but I had absolutely no skill at website design. I advertised for a week or so, looking for a webmaster to take over for me. At this point, I had a very, very horrible little temporary site going on. Jessica eventually contacted me, and the second she said she did web design, I "hired" her. I didn't even know her name I don't think, and I pretty much said "Ok, you're the co-webmaster now!" The site became a REAL site after that, and it has been growing ever since.

GEMMA WARD: From high fashion to Australian cinema!
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

"I think she's such a natural and intuitive and giving actor. She's brilliant. I think everyone's got this opinion that she's going to suck, but would you put someone who couldn't act next to Toni Collette? It would be stupid. "

So says filmmaker Elissa Down who directed the movie The Black Balloon which features Gemma Ward in one of her first movie roles alongside young talents Rhys Wakefield and Luke Ford.

"So I think everyone's going to be surprised when they see her if they've got that opinion of her,'' she added.

Gemma Ward is one of fashion's highest paid models, and was ranked by models.com as #1 in its previous listings.

Says model agency director Christine Fox in her interview with ModelWatch:

I discovered Gemma Ward when she was 14 years old sitting in the crowd of about two thousand young girls at a model competition, she hadn't entered and I ended up persuading her to do so - she never won but I signed her up the next day and the rest is history. It feels pretty surreal to have actually been the one to initiate her career and will be something I will tell my grandchildren. Not many people can say they discovered a super model. Australian newspaper in Sydney wrote an article and referred to me as someone who has defined and set the trend for the look of models at the moment. That was a huge compliment to me and something I think will remain as one of the highlights of my career to date.

More of Gemma Ward soon in an exclusive profile!

BEN WHISHAW: Updates on his new films + more!
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

I'm watching a lot of Andrei Tarkovsky films – partly because our director Katie Mitchell is crazy about him and he's an important reference in our work, and partly just because they're so beautiful. My favourite is Stalker. There's a scene where a little girl moves a glass across a table without touching it which I'm especially fond of..."

...says Ben Whishaw. He was replying to Charlotte Cripps who did an interview with the actor for The Independent.

After playing the lead in Tom Tykwer's Perfume, the British actor previously known for his portrayal of Hamlet at the Old Vic will next be seen in Brideshead Revisited, together with Matthew Goode and Hayley Atwell. His role in Criminal Justice is also making people more and more aware of him as an amazing and talented young actor.

Here's more of Ben's interview:

Books: At the moment I'm not managing to read much more than Dostoyevsky's The Idiot because I'm working on a multimedia adaptation of it on stage at the National Theatre. I first read it when I was 18 or 19. I couldn't have understood much of it but it stirred my imagination. I find I understand it more on a deeper level now. My other man of the moment is the 12th-century Persian mystic and whirling dervish and poet Rumi. I read his poems every day. They are teaching me how to live.

Music: I'm enjoying this Estonian composer, Veljo Tormis. It's strange choral music based on Baltic folk melodies. It's very intense, pure and hypnotic. And I'm still listening to PJ Harvey's White Chalk almost every day. Her music is like a friend to me.

THE BUZZ FROM DOWN UNDER: Exciting new young actors from Australia, Part 1
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

" The new Australian hero doesn't play the Hollywood game; he exudes self-sufficiency and has the physicality of a man of the land. Best of all, he isn't, as we say back home, "up himself", because the culture that spawns these guys like salmon is mired in outsider status and isolation. You can't get more black sheep than a 200-year old nation founded by pissed-off convicts. It's something we revel in - our projected inferiority complex gives us an irresistible renegade reflex and has made self-mockery the spiritual cornerstone of our character."

- - -

- - -

That's from Cleo Glyde, a movie lover from Australia and former runway model for Yves St. Laurent. She wrote the witty, tongue-in-cheek "The Rescuers Down Under" in the March 2002 issue of GQ (also known as the Movie issue). The piece discussed the invasion of the Australian leading men of Hollywood, led by Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Guy Pearce and the late Heath Ledger.

Some years have passed. Mel Gibson is more controversial than ever, and so is Russell Crowe. Guy Pearce and Hugh Jackman are not getting the juicy, challenging roles they deserved and the most promising young talent of all - Heath Ledger - recently died a tragic death.

But life goes on...

Hollywood is always on the hunt for the next batch of fresh, exciting new faces, so tMF takes a look at promising new talents from Down Under. Do they have what it takes? Read what we have to say and you be the judge!

It would seem hard to talk about Casey Affleck without mentioning his brother Ben or vice versa. The brothers have been the subject of many articles - from their looks and their relationships to Ben’s decision to cast his brother in Gone Baby Gone and the completely different career paths both guys took on: Casey remained oblivious to the glamour and glitz of Hollywood, while Ben adjusted to the glare of being in the spotlight. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers - The 30-year old Irish actor is known for speaking his mind- he is quite vocal about a number of issues- from the failings of the film industry to dealing with directors with huge egos to the irrelevance of celebrities & the lack of real talent in some of today’s biggest box-office stars.
