Hollywood’s Unassuming Talent
- - -
- - - It is that same shyness that Robert Pattinson found he shared with his character, Salvador Dalí in the film Little Ashes, that makes him all the more unassuming and unique to his fans.
He worked backstage on his first production there, and then decided to give acting a try. His first role was a small part in Guys and Dolls. However, the next play he auditioned for landed him the lead in Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
This agent, who was in the audience during one of Rob’s performances in Tess of the d’Urbervilles, took notice of this young actor, and signed Rob as a client. Having secured himself an agent in the business, it didn’t take long for Robert be noticed. His first film had him playing a small role as an older Rawdy Crawley in Reese Witherspoon’s Vanity Fair. While his scene did not actually make it into the movie, it can be found in the special features as an alternate ending. - - -
- - - The Start of Something Big: tMF provides a rundown of Rob's movies, with commentaries from various filmmakers and from Rob himself. - - - Harry Potter- Robert is Cedric in Goblet of Fire! The day he returned from South Africa, he got a callback for Goblet of Fire and within that same week he was told he’d landed the part of Cedric Diggory. Newell said: “Cedric exemplifies all that you would expect the Hogwarts champion to be. Robert Pattinson was born to play the role; he’s quintessentially English with chiseled public schoolboy good looks.”
And all the work paid off in the end. The role Robert created in Cedric is one of the most memorable in all the Potter movies. Had any other young actor been cast in that role Cedric would most likely have been a throw-away character, but Robert brought him to life. And so the acclaim began. He spoke of the London premiere of Goblet of Fire in a 2005 interview with Telegraph -
After Harry Potter-mania had died down, Robert went back to London and pursued two of the best roles we’ve seen of him to date. The Haunted Airman and The Bad Mother’s Handbook. The Haunted Airman: In 2006, Robert took on the role of Toby Jugg, once a WWII flight lieutenant, confined to a wheelchair after being wounded in action. The role required Rob to portray both traumatized and paranoid, while still making the audience sympathize with what his character was going through. - - -
- - - The film is described as, ‘a very disturbing, beautifully made and satisfyingly chilling ghost story’ in a review featured by The Stage. They went on to speak about Rob: ‘an actor whose jaw-line is so finely chiseled it could split granite - played the airman of the title with a perfect combination of youthful terror and world weary cynicism.’ Not the easiest of emotions to convey. However, the most poignant words about Robert in this role come from writer and director of The Haunted Airman, Chris Durlacher. When I asked that he describe his experience working with Robert and what he remembered most, he said,
High praise for this young actor, still a newcomer to film, who at this time was only 20 years old. Next up the following year, my favorite character portrayed by Pattinson thus far, Daniel Gale in The Bad Mother’s Handbook. - - - The Bad Mother's Handbook: Ask any die-hard Rob Pattinson fan, and 9 out of 10 will tell you their favorite Rob-role is that of Daniel Gale. Why is that? I’ve often asked myself that question, since I absolutely include myself as 1 of those 9…but how can I explain the draw of this character, of Rob as Daniel Gale, without gushing about the entire film? So, perhaps it’s better explained by the fans. - - -
- - - Laura Rollinger and Tracy Garrett, both Project Managers for the Little Ashes Promotional Blitz Project had this to say,
So…what have we got? Physicality…versatility…delivery…even quirkiness. Not the typical adjectives to describe heartthrobs. And therein lies the reason as to why this actor is so set apart from that stereotype. As Daniel Gale, Robert completely transformed himself, physically and characteristically. You may be looking at Rob, but all you can see is Daniel. That, to many fans and critics alike, is one of the most important things about becoming a great actor…something Robert Pattinson already seems to have challenged and won. This brings us to projects that haven’t been released yet. The short film, The Summerhouse, the widely known Twilight, and the two Independent Films, How To Be and Little Ashes. - - - How To Be and Little Ashes…two Independent Films that, though not released as of yet, people are already responding to. How To Be takes us on a journey of crisis that is ‘growing up’ and dealing with finding one’s place in the world, told from the perspective of an awkward and frustrated musician, Art. - - -
- - - Director Oliver Irving in his interview with tMF had this to say:
How To Be tells the story of Art, having a quarter-life-crisis. After his girlfriend breaks up with him and as his ‘music career’ is going nowhere, he moves back in with his parents. Both Art and his parents are less than thrilled. When Art discovers self-help guru Dr. Ellington, and his book titled ‘It’s Not Your Fault’ Art thinks he’s finally figured out how to be, well, less pathetic. And from there, the heartwarming story and comedy continues to ensue.
As the film is circulating the Film Festival circuit, praise for Rob’s portrayal is already surfacing. The film will be screened October 7, 2008 at the Raindance film festival in London. However, Chris Presswell already had the pleasure of reviewing this film, and had this to say of Rob,
All who have seen Rob as Dali, from fellow actors in the film, to the Producers who were involved with the filming, all agree and commend his performance. As we shared with you in the opening quote, playing Dali was a turning point for Rob. The research he put into it, the versatility he drew from to do the role justice, and the relatability he found in the complexities of Dali.
The film has been described by insiders as ‘sexy’ and even ‘racy,’ but without a doubt, there will also be controversy. But with controversy sometimes comes acclaim. Something I’ve already predicted Robert should get used to. But, one thing is for sure, Robert fans are impatient to see him in this film. Some have said they want to see Rob in Little Ashes even more so than in Twilight. - - - The Twilight Saga-Robert is Edward! This is brings us, finally, to the role that has teen girls screaming around the world…Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer’s novel-turned-film, Twilight. Though a lot of recognition came for Robert during his Harry Potter days, ‘Twilighters’ have put ‘Potter-mania’ to shame.
More high praise from a recognized director. It seems that everyone who works with Robert has nothing but great things to say about him. Catherine mentions how well Rob can slip into different periods and styles. Versatility. But, how does such an actor prepare for a role like that of Edward Cullen? This is a character who is portrayed as perfect. The first instinct would be to play up on that…to try to play ‘perfect.’ But not Robert. It’s been said that out of the thousands of actors who read for the role, Rob was the only one who didn’t play ‘perfect’ but rather, he read it more tortured and deep. He’s never seen Edward as perfect, he’s recognized that only Bella sees Edward as perfect, so he had to internalize and come up with how Edward would feel about himself. - - -
- - - The Hype continues! But Rob has always been unique. He has managed, in the midst of the buzz and hype, to stay true to himself. He has had the same best friends since his days in school. He still wears some of the same clothing he has owned since he was 12 years old. He gives refreshing and witty responses through every interview he does. Even when being followed down streets by the paparazzi, he manages to be polite and funny during the intrusions.
Fans are very excited for Twilight for yet another reason. Catherine, being so impressed with Rob’s musical talent, asked him to contribute to the film’s soundtrack. As a result, Rob will have an original song he composed playing in the movie and on the soundtrack. One thing is for sure, Robert Pattinson is destined to be one of the greats. He’s the whole package and I know I’m excited to see where he takes us in his career. - - - tMF Exclusive profile of Robert Pattinson is written by Shannon McShane, Project Manager, How To Be and Little Ashes Promotional Blitz websites. - - -

A beautiful profile on Rob. It brought together so many key points and quotes. A lovely record. Wedll done. I hate being picky but can I just add that its one song on the album and not 2 as written. The only thing I would add is that maybe the last paragraph needed pulling together some of the key points you'd mentioned in the article. A reflective summary maybe. But thats nit picking. Its wonderful.

Thanks for the Rob-love :)
Thanks for such a well-written profile of Rob. I think he's under the impression that all of his crazy fans only see him as Edward, and that may have been true initially. When I began combing fan-sites, it was as someone 'looking for a glimpse' of the idealized Edward. What I found was Rob Pattinson. Though unalterably human, it is that humanity that we have embraced. His humanity shines through his talent in acting, in his music, and his everyday moments. That is the thing that has held me on Rob.
Thank you again for the profile ~ it's a truly lovely offering to those of us who adore him.

Thanks!
Thanks for the great article. I loved the Haunted Airman and will look up his other work.
His fan base will continue to grow as the Twilight fans look for all things Rob. There are the crazy fans that only see Edward, but a lot of the big Twilight sites are actively promoting his other projects. I look forward to seeing Little Ashes and How to Be. I am so glad that Rob really enjoys acting in indie projects and can't wait to hear his song on the Twilight sound track. Such a unique character with so many talents. We need more actors with this kind of talent. Can't wait to see what he appears in next. I hope Rob is prepared for Twilight-mania, he looked so terrified at Comic-Con

Thanks tMF, this is the article I've been waiting to read about Rob for months. This is the information I've wanted to see. With what little we've seen of Rob, I suspected he was a truly artistically creative and talented soul, but I wanted to hear what people in the industry thought. Now I know our faith in him is not misplaced. I'm so happy for his success and look forward to watching more from him in the future.

Great Article...
Peter/Hugh - I beleive the article was based off his career and the opinions of people who actually "know" him and have worked with him, not his personal life as you see it through paperazzi... I liked the article, I have yet to see Rob's acting abilities but I am hopeful.

Thank you so much for this profile. It's the best article I've ever read about anyone. It's so complete and doesn't just concentrate on Twilight. Rob is an amazing actor and I've seen almost everything he's been in and am truely amazed by his versatility. Thank you again!

...
Very interesting-thanks, Shannon! I agree with the poster who would like him to take a "serial killer part"-or at least something like it. Twilight has the potential to completely overshadow the career of a talented actor by making him a mere celebrity to many people, especially if it is done in a sickeningly sweet, "tween" manner. He definitely deserves better than that! It is a really good thing that Little Ashes, something definitely NOT for the tween set comes out not long afterward-here's hoping for an at least somewhat wide release.
Many people are comparing him to Depp, which is fair, but I think a better comparison would be to Greg Kinnear. While the acting styles are different, the choice to avoid being stuck in the "leading man" roles that can come easily to the attractive in favor of character pieces is admirable, and where I, for one, would like to see Rob. As I said in an earlier post, even a beautiful face gets boring when there is nothing behind it. Pattinson is much more than his face-let's hope he remembers that when the Twilight hysteria peaks in Nov.

Rob is turning out to be a true king chameleon of character manifestation
This is a very respectable insight to the growing actor. I applaud you for your detailed narrative. I have come to the conclusion that our "entertainer" will be going pretty far should he continue down this path of unique success. That of which, I do believe fits his personality as he has claimed. He seems to keep a mysterious, and some what meek front that although is probably his defense mechanism for the fame, is actually becoming more of an alluring quality to the lusting eyes of his fans. But what can you do?
But back to my initial statement of being the king chameleon of character manifestation... He is doing a great job transforming into each role and making it his own. Not to mention that any giddy fan of his can sit back and honestly tell you that out of the thousand movie images they have saved off the numerous websites and blogs, he looks dramatically different, yes I understand character to character they are all different; but there is a difference when you can look at one against the other and not realize it’s the same actor playing both roles. Even when you do the same review from candid shots, he looks completely different from day to day. Rob isn’t the typical Hollywood face that will transform into a role one morning and after a shoot, for the most part, look the same as his character. Every time there is a new shot of him posted, although his cloths seem to stay the same…tee hee – hey comfort is comfort...his overall look is drastically different. He is uniquely charismatic in his leisured attire and it’s working! He has made it pretty obvious that the clean-cut pretty boy look just isn’t his cup of tea 24/7…no pun intended. But that is what his adoring fans are loving. They can’t seem to get enough of his different “looks” from day to day. At this point in his career, he has only played a handful of characters as you explained; and, so far, he has made a exceptional impression on the probing Hollywood eyes as to which direction he would like to take his talents. It’s very impressive that at such an early stage of his career he’s made such invaluable decisions as to how versatile he wants people to view him. I can understand seeing how certain actors have fallen into that evil type-casting hell and he continues to make every effort to take a different path. Bravo my friend, I guess it worked for you taking a left at Albuquerque! You’re definitely blazing your own path. As an actor and musician, I commend you for taking a sincere effort to stay true to yourself. It’s awesome that you delve entirely into the history of each character (whether there is one or not you find one) and you seem to find that rhythm that plays the right chord to your soul (I know cheesy, but I couldn’t resist.) Ok, I’ll stop talking as if I were in a direct conversation him…I just enjoy that he really shows that he wants to make everything it into so much more than the writers have. Well, let me rephrase that, he is doing such an impeccable job displaying his ability to read between the lines of each script and showing what most undoubtedly the writers would have printed, but due to their own constraints could not embellish as much. He is taking free reign and it shows. Spot on! Well you fans adore you and there is so much more in your future to enjoy so I’ll end with this babble with the best motto “Carpe Diem” my friend – Rock each day, live it, love it and do it again!

Love Rob!
I was more than thrilled to hear that Rob was going to be in Twilight. I really liked his portrayal of Cedric in Harry Potter, and when I saw the production stills for the movie, just the way he looked as Edward was pretty much dead on for what I was envisioning. I definitely want to check out some of his other works. The movies sound really interesting. Thanks for turning me onto his other works TMF!

October 09, 2008
Awesome.
Thank you very much, tMF, for this awesome article about Robert's carreer. His versatility as an actor is amazing, considering the enormous differences between the projects he's been part of. He shows more than just a ''pretty face'' and a ''hot body'', and shows that he isn't just Cedric Diggory from Harry Potter, and Edward Cullen from Twilight. He is so much more than that, he has always been. I know I'll sound like a mother, but I admire him so much, since 2005 (when he was far away from the paparazzis, spotlights and hysterical girls lol), and I have to say that I'm so proud of him, mainly in How To Be and The Little Ashes. Thank you very much, tMF, to be giving support to the independent projects that Spunk belongs to, because those are the ones who most need it, and you make people know that the ''Edward Cullen'', the target of their hysterical screams, in truth...is an brillant and talented actor, that's a normal person, but is perfect in his profession, one of the most talented young actors of the world, and that's what matters. So...I hope you keep supporting him and his projects (as a musician too! lol)
P.s: I have nothing against Twilight, I love the books and I'll probably love the movie, but I think that some girls exaggerate in the scandal...and Robert looks so scared sometimes, with that! Poor Spunk. Well, a very big comment, but that's okay lol Mandy - http://www.robertpattinsonbrasil.com, the first website about Rob in Brasil.

Holy Crow.
Thank you for this article. It not only helped me to realize what a diverse and true actor Robert is, but also to see that not every 20something in the spotlight is just a mindless, manufactured drone. From what I've read about "Little Ashes," "How To Be," "The Haunted Airman," "The Bad Mother's Handbook," etc, I see that Robert has such a beautiful passion for what he does. I live in the US so it's kind of hard to get my hands on those movies, but I'm gonna keep trying!
Anyone have any suggestions? P.S. Twilight's going to be AMAZING!

October 09, 2008
Okay, again.
Oh god...did I said that I'm so proud of him? Okay, I said lol. But, it's 'cause I remember ,in 2005 and 2006, I never found anything about him, after Harry Potter. Today, I read all those praises, and when you admire someone for so long, since the time when this one were not in magazines, was not the target of fame...and suddenly that person begin to be recognized, you just feel the same. Radiant. This is how I feel when I read all those construtive praises about Rob. With my eyes shining. The only thing's missing for my totally happiness, is to have the opportuniy to talk with him, and say that sometimes he difficults my job when I'm putting subtitles in the videos for the site, mumblingly between the words and saying all those ''I mean's '' lol. But okay, that's a dream.
So sorry for my bad english, and the two big comments, I promise I'll stop lol Mandy - http://www.robertpattinsonbrasil.com

absolutley wonderful article
This article was a pleasure to read, cause not only does it give Rob glowing recommendations, but goes into detail about just about every movie and acting direction he has taken, as well as his musical abilities(few other articles even touch that issue). A very well rounded article indeed. I can't wait to experience more of Rob as either a actor, musician or both.

More to Expect from Mr. Pattinson!
I've said this then and I'll say it again. Rob is more than just a pretty face with chiseled good looks. He is by far one of the most talented and exciting young actors I've seen in a long time. He not only acts with passion but with abandon. Unlike other actors who spend so much time being pretty and pretending to be acting..Rob on the other has more to offer..he has comedic timing as well..something you don't find in every actor. I expect great things more this young man and I hope he is given more projects that will not only challenge him as an actor but showcase his talent because he has it in abundance.

Great Job Shannon! I keep saying this but it is more true now than before, I see a bright future ahead of him. I really believe that he makes the best role choices. So far he has not disappointed. He just becomes the character he is suppose to be.
I really cant wait to see Little Ashes, all these reviews out at littleashesrelease.com are making me want to see it even more.

Many Rob fans have been busy watching the new theatrical trailer online tonight (& this morning...) Now that you've done this nifty profile on Rob, I'd love to hear your (Shannon, Jed...) review of this much-anticipated trailer? Maybe?

October 09, 2008
Rob is a brilliant actor...the good looks are just a bonus.
I am also a big fan of "The Bad Mother's Handbook". I have to say that it is one of my favorite films. I'll admit I initially watched it because Rob was in it, but the film was great...Rob just enhanced it. I for one can't wait to see "How to be" and "Little Ashes", yes because Rob is in those movies, but because of the actor and not the pretty face. He is truly an amazing and versatile actor. For instance, he really draws you in in the "Haunted Airman" with such a deep and dark character, whereas in "The Bad Mother's Handbook" his awkward and clumsy character bring out the comedy and endearment for that character.
He's done comedy and drama...now with the action and romance in Twilight, I'd say he's pretty much done them all. I can't wait to see more. Great article...thanks for enlightening everybody on the whole Robert Pattinson package.

What a thrill it is to support a man who is obviously SO TALENTED but also so GROUNDED. His humility and genuineness (not to mention his intelligence, humor & wit) I believe are the characteristics of this man that make him so appealing to these lovely folks following his budding career as am I. His physical attractiveness is the cherry on top. Way to go Spunk! Best of wishes to you on this wild ride!

I want to agree with all of you. This article was great and really doing him justice. Of course he's going to be great in Twilight, but there's more about him than just this one role and his really good looks. I can't really describe it. He's just special. I really look forward to watching How to Be, Little Ashes and especially Summer House. My favourite roles of him so far are actually Daniel Gale and Toby Jugg. The songs I've heard so far are touching. His voice is really great. I could spend my whole day writing and reading stuff about him.
However, thank you for this great article.

This is prob the best one I have read about him, and I agree that this is just the beginning. It's funny bc I could really see him as a James Bond in 15 yrs..even 20 years!! think, all that time in between...he's going to do some great things as an actor.
