Hollywood's Indie Kid
tMF profiles the award winning young actor Lou Taylor Pucci!
by Jed Medina & Kathleen Sydenham

With his breakthrough film, Thumbsucker, for which he won the Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival and a special jury prize at Sundance, Lou Taylor Pucci is fast becoming a young actor to be reckoned with. Acting since he was just 10 years old, Pucci has been seen in memorable roles in The Go-Getter, Fast Food Nation, The Chumbscrubber, Empire Falls, Southland Tales and Personal Velocity.

Born and raised in New Jersey, he has an accomplished musician for a father and a fashion model for a mother. Rumor has it that he was geared towards the entertainment scene from an early age, starting with his parent's choice of his name. Says Lou in a recent interview:

" I always knew I was going to be in entertainment, but no one was really making me be there. Like my parents kinda named me Lou Taylor Pucci because they thought it was a good stage name."

And Pucci has proved that he can act:

" Lou does a very good job of portraying the low key teen and his character is fun to watch as he changes to the new Justin (in the Thumbsucker). One moment, he is a surly, confused teen who would prefer to sleep and then after he starts taking Ritalin, he becomes a super student, always full of energy and raring to go," says a reviewer about the film The Thumbsucker.

In an interview with Larry Philips, Pucci discusses his approach to acting and his ideas on how to approach a role:

Has your entire approach to acting been a 'learn as you go' process?

Yeah, absolutely. I think it is the best way to do it. I didn't really even learn too much in school, really, because everyone is always just telling you. If I wanted to learn history, I'd just read a book, I'd actively go at it. When you are passively sitting in a seat and somebody is telling you stuff, it kinda just doesn't go in, it doesn't go into my brain. I have to search for it, or watch for it, or become completely interested and enthralled in it for anything to sink into my brain (laughs).

On screen, you seem to be completely natural at acting. Do you feel that way, or do you feel that you are working actively at it?

"Uh... I don't know how to answer that one. There are so many complicated answers to that. There are so many different pieces to that one that I can't even figure out. I don't know what a natural is. I know I was always talented from when I was little, I could always sing and dance and I hadn't been taught.

I could sing pretty easily and I think that was just because of my Dad, because of hearing him all the time sing. I hadn't sang before, but for some reason it just came out very easily, when I wanted it to, for the first time, at the audition for Oliver! here in New Jersey."

Preferring not to portray young characters in teeny bopper movies, Pucci's choice of roles has provided audiences around the world with an amazing array of films that are honest true grit portrayals of the young and the restless.

In his latest film, The Go-Getter, described as a new take on the road-film genre, Pucci plays a young teen who recently lost his mother and who goes on to look for his lost brother. He steals a car in his search, and on his way, encounters some very colorful and interesting characters, and in turn discovers himself. It was another triumph for Pucci, who is now becoming known as a young actor with solid credentials in both mainstream and indie cinema.

tMF certainly has its eyes on a number of talented actors- Matthew Goode, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Stahl and more. At the moment, we have below our latest profiles, with more coming up soon!

It would seem hard to talk about Casey Affleck without mentioning his brother Ben or vice versa. The brothers have been the subject of many articles - from their looks and their relationships to Ben’s decision to cast his brother in Gone Baby Gone and the completely different career paths both guys took on: Casey remained oblivious to the glamour and glitz of Hollywood, while Ben adjusted to the glare of being in the spotlight. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers - The 30-year old Irish actor is known for speaking his mind- he is quite vocal about a number of issues- from the failings of the film industry to dealing with directors with huge egos to the irrelevance of celebrities & the lack of real talent in some of today’s biggest box-office stars. Not many people are blessed with the opportunity to enter a deeply rewarding and exciting career. In the case of Michael Angarano, it has been like that since he was 5 years old. As a young model, he was exposed early to the hustle and bustle of a glam job. Not surprisingly, he began his successful transition into acting a couple of years later. [ read more ]

Kostja Ullmann: Taking on such a challenging role is not a new departure for the actor. After appearing in a variety of shows on German television, Ullmann was offered the role of Achim, one of the leads in Marco Kreuzpaintner’s Summer Storm. [ read more ]
