Review by Rina H. 2057: The Sun is dying. The Earth is covered with ice. Eight astronauts on board the spaceship Icarus II pursue a mission to carry a bomb into the Sun to save the Earth and its inhabitants. "If the Sun dies, so do we..." What does it feel like to lose the ground under your feet? What does it feel like to be that far away from the Earth, somewhere out in space? What does it feel like to reach the end of the world, the end of being able to understand? In an interview with the German movie magazine Cinema, director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, The Beach) said that all these questions represent what his movie Sunshine is about. His aim was to let everything appear as real as possible with a focus on psychological aspects. The characters developed by writer Alex Garland are intensely human, and brought to life by a wonderful cast. There is Capa, played by Cillian Murphy (Breakfast On Pluto, Batman Begins), a man with a strong belief in science but still with a huge respect for nature. There is Mace, played by Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), who at first seems to be the most unfriendly character even though his intentions are nothing but noble. He dedicates himself completely to the mission, even if he has to endure certain sacrifices. And there is Cassie, played by Rose Byrne (Wicker Park, Troy), a sensitive and upright young woman with an inner strength. Still, Sunshine is not only an ensemble play: it also is visual eye candy. Impressive pictures of the glowing sun and the cold and sterile spaceship fill the screen. Light and darkness lie close together, as do beauty and death. The viewer can relate to Capa feeling revitalized and impressed as he faces the Sun, but at the same time one is aware that this burning planet is dangerous, no matter how beautiful it might be. Boyle shows it as a kind of drug, presenting it as addictive but deadly. |
