"I couldn't be happier to be opening this most auspicious festival with this utterly seductive and fascinating film, which stars some of the most charismatic young performers in the business, and affirms John Maybury as one of our most important directors," said Hannah McGill, the event's artistic director. "It's a film that I personally adore, and opening with it is the perfect expression of our commitment to intelligent, impassioned, exciting new film-making."

That's Hannah McGill speaking, Edinburgh international film festival's artistic director. The movie is, of course, John Maybury's The Edge of Love.

I had a feeling of deja vu as I watched the trailer, as if I was seeing some never-before seen footage from Joe Wright's Atonement, where Knightley played one of the leads. I was totally taken by this trailer, and while I frowned at the comment that it might be 'better than Atonement', I will reserve judgment until I can watch the whole thing. I already have some reservations about The Duchess, but this one, with Sienna Miller and Cillian Murphy adding more prestige to the film's cast, I can't help but feel it might become one of the year's most acclaimed films.

tMF top affiliate The Cillian Site has reported the release of the film's trailer (via YouTube as shown below), and remarked:

Cillian had us swooning! Sporting an English accent, he voices over the end of the trailer with a quote that could serve as the film's theme: "First love's all right as far as it goes; last love, that's what I'm interested in."

Murphy plays William Killick, who is married to Vera (played by Keira Knightley), a young couple whose lives closely revolve around Dylan Thomas and his wife Caitlin (played by Matthew Rhys and Sienna Miller respectively).

BBC reports:

The story of Dylan Thomas has brought some movie biz glamour to Mid Wales recently. Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Matthew Rhys have been in New Quay and Lampeter to film 'The Edge of Love', a film built around an infamous event in 1945 when Thomas was shot at by the husband of a mutual friend.

The story revolves around a reputed love triangle involving Thomas, his wife Caitlin, played by Miller, and the poet's childhood friend Vera Killick portrayed by Knightley. Following an argument in the town's Black Lion pub, Killick was accused of firing a machine gun at Thomas' home in New Quay, but he was cleared when the matter went to court.

Rhys said he thought it was "surprising" how few people knew about the incident.

"It was a major part of Thomas' life and it has not been that well reported," he said. Rhys admitted the task in hand made him feel anxious: "I don't think nervous actually quite qualifies the way I feel - terrified is a more accurate description. "I was enormously nervous and worried about taking on the mantle of one of Wales' greatest sons," he added.

However, Rhys said his colleagues made his job easier. "I'm happy about how passionate they are about the script and story.

"We all share the same enthusiasm for the amazing story," he said.

Atonement 2??
written by Jan, May 16, 2008
What a coincidence, I was watching the movie trailer of this just tonight....Even though I haven't really seen Atonement, from the clips I've seen and learned on this site, I would have to somewhat agree with you Jed and I sort of felt a bit of déjà vu watching this trailer as well. Hard to really say but, perhaps maybe that's the reason why the makers of this film put in the somewhat bold statement in the trailer, that this is better than Atonement. Cinematical also pointed out the trailer's similarities to Atonement as well, and mentioned that like in Atonement, Keira say's in this trailer to Cillian's character "come back to me". There is even a similar scene of them frolicking on the beach. Here's hoping that this movie will get a fair chance though, and won't be compared too much to Atonement.

I too liked this trailer, and it does look like an interesting and complicated love story. Cillian's gorgeous eyes are mesmerizing in the trailer. It's interesting that the screenwriter is Keira's mother.

It also occured to me while watching the trailer, that the actor Matthew Rhys, is also from the TV show Brothers & Sisters, of which I'm a fan of.

Thanks for the spotlight on this film. I'd be interested in seeing this.

Hmm...the similarities to Atonement in the preview are definitely glaring. It really does feel like the Atonement part II. That being said, it still looks really great. I am a huge Cillian Murphy fan and Keira definitely has been growing on me. Sienna Miller, however, is still not a favorite of mine but she seems less annoying here. I will definitely be seeing this one.

tMF certainly has its eyes on a number of talented actors- Matthew Goode, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Stahl and more. At the moment, we have below our latest profiles, with more coming up soon!

It would seem hard to talk about Casey Affleck without mentioning his brother Ben or vice versa. The brothers have been the subject of many articles - from their looks and their relationships to Ben’s decision to cast his brother in Gone Baby Gone and the completely different career paths both guys took on: Casey remained oblivious to the glamour and glitz of Hollywood, while Ben adjusted to the glare of being in the spotlight. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers - The 30-year old Irish actor is known for speaking his mind- he is quite vocal about a number of issues- from the failings of the film industry to dealing with directors with huge egos to the irrelevance of celebrities & the lack of real talent in some of today’s biggest box-office stars. Not many people are blessed with the opportunity to enter a deeply rewarding and exciting career. In the case of Michael Angarano, it has been like that since he was 5 years old. As a young model, he was exposed early to the hustle and bustle of a glam job. Not surprisingly, he began his successful transition into acting a couple of years later. [ read more ]

Kostja Ullmann: Taking on such a challenging role is not a new departure for the actor. After appearing in a variety of shows on German television, Ullmann was offered the role of Achim, one of the leads in Marco Kreuzpaintner’s Summer Storm. [ read more ]
