It all started with Harry Potter. As soon as Warner Bros. announced they were moving their tentpole holiday release to next summer, rival studios scrambled to take advantage of the hole left in the remaining 2008 release schedule. As of the posting of this article, this is where the dust has settled so far.

As tMF takes a comprehensive look at the remaining films of 2008, let us know which films you are most looking forward to this year.

September 19 (Friday)

Lakeview Terrace

An interracial couple (Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington) move next door to an LAPD officer (Samuel L. Jackson) who seems hell bent on running them out of town.

Why you should care: With the exception of The Wicker Man, Neil LaBute has made some really good movies. Plus, Samuel L. Jackson in full bad-ass mode is fun to watch no matter how bad the movie ends up being.

Why it could suck: The trailer doesn’t do the movie any favors and exception or not, LaBute’s involvement in The Wicker Man is a tough pill to swallow.

My Best Friend’s Girl

Tank (Dane Cook) makes a living as an uncouth womanizer hired by guys who want their girlfriends or wives to reconsider leaving them. His best friend Dustin (Jason Biggs) hires him to work his magic on the love of his life (Kate Hudson) and surprise, surprise, it backfires.

Why you should care: Neither Kate Hudson, Dane Cook and Jason Biggs have struck oil in a while. What’s that old saying? Even the sun shines on a dog’s something or other… I forget how it goes.

Why it could suck: Whether you like his brand of comedy or not, Dane Cook hasn’t been able to carry a film yet. The real question is, how can it not?

Igor

Tired of always being the assistant to his Master, Igor tries to go out on his own to win the annual Evil Science Fair with a creation of his own.

Why you should care: A moderate twist on a familiar tale with the always reliable John Cusack and Steve Buscemi in check.

Why it could suck: Non-Pixar animated films are hit and miss. Being the first project from a new studio doesn’t help.

Ghost Town

Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) dies for a few minutes during a routine medical procedure. He awakens with the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. Never having been confused as someone with people skills, he is now bothered into interacting with people in his life at the behest of a meddlesome ghost (Greg Kinnear).

Why you should care: Ricky Gervais, who has been so brilliant on TV, in the original British version of The Office and Extras, makes the leap to leading man.

Why it could suck: The trailer and the ho hum story makes it look as if his talents could very well be wasted in this outing.

The Dutchess (Limited)

A period piece chronicling the life of Georgiana Cavendish (Keira Knightley), the 18th century aristocrat who endured a difficult marriage to the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes).

Why you should care: Keira Knightly and Ralph Fiennes are proven costume drama commodities.

Why it could suck: Costume dramas rarely have widespread appeal and nothing about this movie or its story suggests the streak will be broken.

September 26 (Friday)

Miracle at St. Anna

Spike Lee directs an epic story of four black American soldiers stationed in Tuscany, Italy that are somehow connected to a murder by a post office worker in 1984.

Why you should care: Agree with him or not, Spike Lee is a talented director. Coming off his Emmy-winning mini-series, When the Levees Broke, and his biggest box office success, Inside Man, Lee has positioned himself to make a run at his first ever Oscar.

Why it could suck: The bad press he received for his verbal attacks on Clint Eastwood, the Coen brothers, and most recently Judd Apatow, could hurt his chances, regardless of how good the film ends up being.

Eagle Eye

A mystery woman on the other end of the phone seems to know their every move and thrust two strangers (Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan) into plot involving political assassination. They must work together to clear their names.

Why you should care: It has a moderately impressive trailer and star Shia LaBeouf and director D.J. Caruso scored a surprise hit with last year’s Disturbia. Plus there is talk that a teaser trailer for next summer’s Transformers sequel could be attached.

Why it could suck: The release date was pushed back from a summer release and there are no less than five screenwriters credited (both bad signs). And does anyone else think LaBeouf looks oddly out of place in the trailer?

Nights in Rodanthe

Based on the Nicolas Sparks book, a doctor (Richard Gere) travels to see his estranged son in North Carolina and falls for an unhappy inn keeper (Diane Lane).

Why you should care: After the success of The Notebook comes another love story based on a book by author Nicholas Sparks. If anyone can sell romantic male lead, it’s Richard Gere.

Why it could suck: Sparks also wrote A Walk to Remember. This thing screams “chick flick”. Any guy looking for points with his lady this weekend might score big, but could be in for a brutal time getting there.

The Lucky Ones

Three soldiers (Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Peña) meet as they are coming back from the war in Iraq. Circumstances keep them together as they embark on a road trip across the country to fulfill their own personal missions and learn to adjust to life after the war.

Why you should care: Finally a lighter-hearted war movie that doesn’t cram as much of the violence and politics of war down our throats.

Why it could suck: A movie that deals with post-war traumas, this looks and sounds like Stop-Loss Lite. Politics aside, the box office hasn’t been kind to Iraqi war movies as of late.

Choke (Limited)

Adapted from the Chuck Palahniuk novel about a sex addicted con-man (Sam Rockwell) who pays for his mothers hospital bills by fleecing unsuspecting patrons while pretending to choke to death at upscale restaurants

Why you should care: Chuck Palahniuk fans have been waiting for this movie for years. The last (and only other) time one of his books were adapted, we got Fight Club. Sam Rockwell’s involvement makes the pot that much sweeter.

Why it could suck: Adapting one of Palahniuk’s most bizarre books to date could prove to be too big a mountain for first time director Clark Gregg to climb.

Great movies! I love that now I know more about all of them...though of course, now I'd love to have the time to go and see them all, and that probably won't happen...but at least I now know what to keep and eye out for! Thanks!
