I'm a big fan of Jamie Bell, and Mr. Foe is definitely one of his most amazing performances as an actor. I know that his next movie Defiance will rock, but Hallam Foe (Mr. Foe) is his most significant role following Billy Elliot and Undertow. I just hope people get to watch and see how talented he is. So, we're bumping this post to give our viewers more info and insights into this amazing film. - - -
- - - Hallam Foe, the new film by David McKenzie, is destined to surpass even our biggest expectations. With an exciting mix of sights and sounds, thrills and chills, and surprising twists and turns, it is a modern take on the coming-of-age genre that only McKenzie can deliver. With an amazing cast and an awesome soundtrack, it was premiered at the recent Berlinale to much acclaim. A few years ago, McKenzie gave us the amazing Young Adam, featuring Ewan McGregor and the multi-talented Tilda Swinton. With its deliberately slow pace and a hypnotic and remarkable story, it is notable for the powerful and truthful performances of the actors. In Hallam Foe, we witness another film that has its own unique agenda and style. It’s like sitting down to watch the sequel of a story that still lingers up to this day. But don't get me wrong, Hallam Foe is a separate and totally engrossing film, surpassing Young Adam in many ways. Short Synopsis: Set in Edinburgh, Hallam Foe is the story of a young teenager who recently lost his mother and is desperately trying to cope with the loss. Unlike other teens, Hallam has a unique and somewhat sinister hobby - he likes to observe those around him, using binoculars to study his neighbors and to investigate what he considers the untimely death of his mother at the hands of his father’s secretary, who is now his new stepmother.

- - - I am now just one week away from shooting the film. Most things are in place but it has been a majorly torrid time to get here. Even at this stage there are many things that could go wrong and the whole house of cards that is every film could collapse - not for the first time I might add. My film Young Adam collapsed 3 weeks before shooting and it was only the resolution of my lead cast Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton to keep loyal to the project that allowed us gather up the pieces and start again 7 months later. Naturally this was a scary and unpleasant time for me and everyone else who was fighting to get that difficult film financed - in a brutal commercial world that couldn't understand a film about loneliness, sex and grief. But we got there in the end and I am very proud of the result - not that I wouldn't make a couple of changes!
This means that the Hallam blog cannot promise its readers the total open access that it could have in a more robust environment - although I bet it is a whole bunch more open than any other attempt to do a blog for a film. But I can't say some things about things like the processes of negotiation that have got us to this point, because I need the continuing support of my producer, my team, my cast, my financiers, my sales agents, my distributor, my agents and a whole host of other people. For example, a major executive decision was made by one of our key financiers today that has significant ramifications on the film, for better or for worse who knows. But I can't tell you what that was right now. - - - Hallam Foe report by Kathleen Sydenham, with excerpts from David McKenzie's post at the official movie blog, getyourpeople.com [ Visit official movie site ] [ Jamie Bell Profile ] [ IMDb Movie details ]

Hits: 1844 Comments (10)US/Canada Release Dates?
I checked the IMDb Hallam Foe page for US and Canadian release dates, but none are posted yet. Any word on any dates?
Even though the subject matter is perhaps somewhat controversial, this sounds like an intriguing and interesting film to see. I have not seen many of Jamie Bell's movies, except for Billy Elliot, which I absolutely loved! I have checked out the Hallam Foe movie blog, set up by the movie's director and his assistant and blogger....I think its a really great blog. I have come upon a handful of actors and directors who admin their own websites/blogs/forums, and I really think its such a great thing to see and do, and really wish more actors/directors would follow their lead. Perhaps if there were more actors and directors that showed interest in conversing/chatting with movie fans like this blog, fans would then tend to be more respectful, than alot of the fansites out there these days. Also, so true that You Tube and My Space is a great way to promote movies and music today. Thanks Jed for the info and updates on this interesting sounding and looking film. Another film I'm interested in seeing hopefully.

controversial!
Yes indeed! very controversial topic. Bell is also going to play the role left behind by Daniel Radclife in Equus, so he's quite an actor, no fear!
I think this film will be released in the US/Canada after the UK launch. Magnolia Pictures site has yet to announce the film as part of its 'coming soon!' but it has been announced in the blog already...maybe they are still trying to figure out NOT to make it too controversial! I prefer European versions especially the DVDs, some US versions are so lame! why is censorship such a big thing to some Americans? :sigh

...
I also heard that Jamie Bell was going to take over the role in the Broadway play, Equus from Radcliffe, but supposedly that is not the case now. Here is a quote and link from an article....
Though many thought that Jamie Bell, the star of the screen version of Billy Elliot, would replace Radcliffe, a spokesperson for the production told Theatre.com, "I can confirm that Jamie Bell is not going into Equus. Its a rumour and itҒs incorrect. Radcliffe and Griffiths have agreed to recreate their performances on Broadway next spring. Jamie Bell Not Doing Equus I agree, it certainly does take a fearless actor to take on the Equus role indeed. I believe I read on Jamie's wiki page, that it was more having to do with bad timing for him I think, for not taking Equus. I have my doubts that our local theatre will show Hallam Foe--not so much perhaps because of the controversial subject matter, but they tend to show more popular mainstream movies unfotunately. It's quite puzzling sometime, why US censors don't seem to have a problem with all the violence and hacking off limbs in movies, but when its having to do with sexuality.... :roll For example, when the DVD for Brokeback Mountain was released at Wal-Mart, so many people in the US protested and were against Wal-Mart for carrying/selling the BBM DVD....Here in Canada, I never heard of any protests go on at all. It was like any other typical day a DVD comes out at Wal-Mart in Canada. I apologize for getting a bit off topic.

to censor or not to censor...
Depicting gory and violence is more to the liking of some, especially those who have issues with religion, I think. when it comes to sexuality and nudity, it's treated as a complete and different issue, which should not be the case, IMO
I agree with you, all those blood on screen, and nobody protested, but when you have someone showing some more skin...its totally insane! Hallam Foe is a fine fine movie, Kat has seen it and she's raving about the performances and the music, and there are some sexy scenes there, hopefully they will NOT delete them. Equus sounded like a challenging play to start with, and I think anyone who will play the role left behind by Daniel Radcliffe will no longer get the kind of publicity as he got, I mean, being the original player (in this version, anyway) gets all the glory, having to play second fiddle may get some attention, but not as much, IMO. I think its a good career move on the part of Jamie Bell not to pursue this role. He's a better actor than Radcliff IMO. I think the roles he has chosen so far has shown his depth as an actor. Of course many may disagree, for having a film that hits the $100 million mark is not to be taken lightly as Radcliffe has achieved already, for such a young age. Anyway, I enjoyed watching both young actors! :grin

pathetic display of values? WTFIt's quite puzzling sometime, why US censors don't seem to have a problem with all the violence and hacking off limbs in movies, but when its having to do with sexuality.... Censoring
It certainly does seem that no movie is considered too violent or too graphic these days. For instance, I recently read on the Cinematical site about the upcoming controversial film Captivity, that Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert is in. Even the reviewer mentioned that a particular VERY graphic and disgusting scene was pretty hard to watch even for him.
One thing I just wondered about as were talking about US censorship.....I'm curious, I wonder what type of rules our Canadian censors go by? In other words, are US censors more strict than they are here in Canada, or are we about the same I wonder? IMO, I would say that the french from Qubec, are somewhat more open and free regarding sexuality and nudity on TV and in films, than perhaps they are in other parts of Canada I believe. Hallam Foe is a fine fine movie, Kat has seen it and she's raving about the performances and the music, and there are some sexy scenes there, hopefully they will NOT delete them. Oh, how great that Kat got to see Hallam Foe! Tell her were all jealous, LOL! I too heard that the music is great in this, with singer Franz Ferdinand. Lets hope like you say that they won't edit/delete the sexy scenes. I have heard that Jamie has some major chemistry going on with the women in this. You have a point about whoever takes on the Equus part may not get the publicity like Radcliffe did. I can't really say I'm familiar with Radcliffe's acting much, since I'm not what you would call a Harry Potter fan, and I haven't seen any of the films. Seems like I'm in the minority, since pretty well everyone is a Potter fan, LOL. Jed, when will you get to maybe see Hallam Foe where you are?

Hallam Foe! Censorship and Elisha!
Kat attended the Berlinale, she's in Germany for some fashion-related projects, so it was her luck that the film festival was also on the same date. She can't stop praising the movie, as she is also a big, big Jamie Bell fan! She'll do a review asap...but don't count on her giving us a deadline! :upset the last time she sent me a review, it was way way back (calling Kat!!!)
As for censorship, I simply don't believed in that. You can have a film rating, to avoid having children to watch scenes that they should not see yet, but films, acting and the very idea of creating a work in cinema, I don't think it should be supressed. A sexy scene for one maybe a shocking scene to another, but it should not be an imposition of someone's perspective. We are, I believed, matured enough to censor ourselves, if that makes sense... :p Cuthbert is one top of my list for the profiles of upcoming actresses! I love her acting, she is so natural and she is amazing and beautiful!

Censorship sucks!
i don't agree with censorship either, and to have filmmakers revise/edit their work to satisfy censors, it seems so irritating and an attack on freedom of expression! why censor a love scene, if its an important part of the movie? Most of the censorship does in the US is because some lobbied to have 'objectionable' scenes removed, and who's standard? Some pathetic old conservative guy who also has secrets in his closets? yeah, its pathetic!
i heard this film has some disturbing scenes--- as they say --- but who has the right to judge a scene as being disturbing or what? let the viewers decide! i hope to see Hallam Foe is its complete version!
