I've been dying to see Ben Whishaw in another role after Perfume! I just think this guy is an awesome actor and that he can be really good in both modern and classical roles. I'm glad that Hanway Films just announced the completion of the much-awaited Brideshead Revisited, featuring Whishaw and two other topnotch actors- Matthew Goode and Hayley Atwell. Get to see the trailer (via youtube, below!)

More updates! Now comes the homoerotic flavor between Sebastian and Charles! Says the Independent:

But what have they done to the story? Something that will drive Waugh aficionados wild with rage.

For in comes a scene set in Venice, where Charles Ryder begins a love affair with the aristocratic Julia Flyte, under the nose of her brother, Sebastian, whose descent into alcoholism starts here. The film implies that this is a love triangle – a homoerotic friendship between young men that is displaced when one of them begins a heterosexual love affair, bringing emotional destruction to the other. What it’s about: Waugh’s novel, set in pre-war England as the privileged aristocratic class begins to decline, is an evocative and poignant tale of forbidden love and the loss of innocence. The story begins in 1925 at Oxford, when Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode) is befriended by the louche and flamboyant Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw), son of Lord Marchmain. Charles is quickly seduced by an exciting new world of money, glamour and outrageous behavior.

Charles is invited to "Brideshead," the Flyte family's magnificent ancestral home, where he becomes infatuated with Julia (Hayley Atwell), Sebastian's beautiful sister. But as Charles's emotional relationship with the Marchmain family deepens, he finds himself continually at odds with their deepest family bond, that of their overpowering Catholic faith.

The Cast: Two of today’s most promising young actors take the lead roles - narrator Charles Ryder is played by Matthew Goode, while his new friend, Lord Sebastian Flyte, is played by Ben Whishaw. (There has been talk that Jude Law and James McAvoy were once considered for these roles.)

Newcomer Hayley Atwell will play the role of Sebastian's sister, Julia Flyte.

Matthew Goode , last seen in The Lookout (playing the bad guy to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character), Copying Beethoven and in the romantic comedy Imagine Me & You, will play the lead role as Charles Ryder.

The Role: Charles is an intelligent, artistic and lonely young man whose mother died when he was still a young boy and whose father is an eccentric and sardonically humorous scholar. The Ryders are far from poor, but by his father's choice they lead a life of gloom, and Charles's first impression of Brideshead is one of splendor and grace; in fact it is the fountain and all it represents which captivates him.

After portraying several interesting and notable supporting characters, it’s about time Goode got to play a lead role. While he’s been making waves in the UK both on stage and in television, this role will allow Goode to prove to American audiences that he is more than just a pretty boy with a sexy British accent.

Ben Whishaw:, who is definitely one of today’s busiest rising stars, will once again portray an interesting and challenging character. Sebastian Flyte, who is in some ways a troubled young man, finds greater solace in alcohol than in religion and he slowly descends into that habit, drifting away from his family.

The Role: Lord Sebastian Flyte is the attractive, wayward and helpless younger son whom Charles meets in Oxford, where he is the idol of the fashionable aesthetic set prominent in English university life in the 1920s. Charles's romantic affection for Sebastian is partly due to the glitter of the new world that Sebastian represents, partly due to the protective feeling of a stronger towards a weaker character, and partly due to the foreshadowing of his love for Julia, which becomes the consuming passion of his mature years.

After Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Whishaw has taken on a number of exciting new roles, including being one of the many Bob Dylan characters in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There.

This is the first time that the novel has been adapted for the big screen. In 1981 a mini-series starring Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, John Gielgud and Claire Bloom won multiple Emmys, Golden Globes and BAFTA TV award and was essentially its first and highly-successful adaptation for television.

Acclaimed actress Emma Thompson will play Lady Marchmain. Others in the cast include Michael Gambon and Greta Scacchi.

"I'm excited by the challenge of bringing Waugh's heartbreaking love story to the big screen and to a new generation. I'm also delighted with the exceptional British cast we have on board,” says director Julian Jarrold.

Produced by Ecosse Films for BBC Films, 2 entertain, the UK Film Council, and Miramax Films, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED is directed by Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane, Kinky Boots), from an adapted screenplay by Andrew Davies (Bleak House - TV) and Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland), from Evelyn Waugh'scelebrated 1945 novel. The eleven-week shoot includes five weeks at Castle Howard as well as at locations in Oxford, London, Venice and Morocco.

This upcoming film report was written by Jed Medina, with excerpts from The Guardian Limited article ‘Waugh versus Hollywood’ published 22, May 2004, and the wikipedia page on Brideshead Revisited and Cineuropa.

Ben Whishaw, Very Good Actor!
Thanks Jed for updating us on Ben's newest project. I'm quite sure hearing Ben in his own British accent will be something to look forward to indeed. I'm a new fan of Ben's, after discovering and researching him in his role portraying Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. Ben is certainly an actor to watch out for, and is in big demand. I especially look forward to seeing him in Perfume as well.

Ben rocks!
I'm particularly fond of his acting in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. I have watched it about 5-6 times already, and I am still impressed with his acting. Especially in the orgy scene at the last part of the film. I don't want to write any spoilers, but Tykwer did a great job in this movie, and I don't think they are any other actors that can up the level as Ben did to his role.

Matthew Goode is also a good actor. I watched him last in Copying Beethoven. He seems to be casted in supporting roles, but this time he takes the lead! Good for him and good for the movie-going public!

...
Jed, I'm SO jealous that you've gotten to see Perfume more than once. The very first time I heard about Ben acting in Perfume, it really intrigued me! Ben in this role, is how I first discovered him as an actor! When Perfume hit theatres, it was released in only the major Canadian cities...very limited theatres I believe unforuntately. This is one movie I really want to see on DVD.

I too have heard how amazing Ben's acting is in this, especially with such little and sparse dialogue that his character had. It's apparant that many directors are becoming more and more interested in Ben to do their projects.

Especially in the orgy scene at the last part of the film.

I bet that was an interesting day on set, LOL! :p

Good for Goode! :zzz I have not seen any of his movies, but glad to hear this will be his first leading role.
