tMF WEEKLY TOP 3: Who's making the biggest buzz among your favorite young actors? Print E-mail
Written by Jed Medina
Monday, 22 September 2008

Every Monday, tMF gives you a rundown on who's making the biggest buzz among the current crop of young talents, based on the hottest news about upcoming movies, awards and nominations, magazine covers and interviews, and special appearances on festivals, talk shows and upcoming TV series or just from anything that make fans more excited about movies!

Some rants! I'm beginning to arrive at the conclusion that maybe Jamie Bell is becoming more and more under-rated. Why should Mr. Foe only get a limited release? The young actor is phenomenal, for Chrissakes! If you're a bonafide fan of young actors, its time for you to watch Mr. Foe and demand for more of Jamie Bell. In our weekly top 3, he's definitely covered. So is Zac Efron, and don't tell me he sucks in High School Musical, wait till you watch him in Me and Orson Welles!

Another mention, this time, the disturbing behavior and mind-set of fans. Question: If you saw a picture of a young actor you admire leaving a Hollywood pub, will you think - fast and furious - he's trying to ruining his life by drinking? My Answer: What an insecure, hopeless dick you must be!

- - -

Capturing the third spot for the first time is Shia Labeouf. With half a mil salary, Labeouf is definitely enjoying a career high. Recent incidents seem to highlight how much people are interested in getting to read news about the young actor.

The Buzz: Perhaps some of the more serious fans have watched LaBeouf's older and better movies- A Guide to Recognizing your Saints, Holes, The Greatest Game Ever Played. I mean the guy can act. It would be sad to relegate him into predictable, formulaic movies that you'll automatically forget once you leave the theater.

The good news now is that he's about to do a rather intriguing character in Dark Fields. We recently blogged him on this new flick from filmmaker Neil Burger, the same guy who gave us Edward Norton's The Illusionist. In this new movie Shia is to play "an intellectual slacker and former cocaine addict". It goes deeper and darker when Labeouf's character discovered he's in possession of a new drug, with some very curious effects. I think the role is perfect for him.

- - -

Sliding down a notch, to give way to another talented actor who is definitely getting a much needed buzz, Robert Pattinson stays in the top 3 list at second spot.

The Buzz: After last week's papz episode, Rob is reported to be preparing for another indie flick, entitled Parts Per Billion. Produced under ChubbCo Film, the movie is a mixture of love story, drama and some thriller to add some bits of spice from a script developed by Brian Horiuchi. The writer-director is credited for coming up with such films as Isle of the Dead and America so Beautiful. Pattinson is supposed to play one of the characters, Erik.

I recently posted my film review of How To Be, definitely one of his best films so far and the 'potential' that Rob has shown recently is finally realized in his realistic and funny portrayal of Art. A character very much opposite the real Robert Pattinson.

- - -

At the top spot is no other than the amazing Jim Sturgess! Come to think of it, both our first and second placers know how to sing and act.

The Buzz: Jim is blazing hot for his powerful portrayal of an IRA spy in the thriller Fifty Dead Men Walking. As reported earlier, the movie encountered some problems when the author and the very person Jim played in the movie raised his legal objection to the movie. A few days later, a settlement was reached and Toronto has shown the film as scheduled.

Recent news has confirmed some of our earlier concerns, that perhaps Jim and the cast and crew of the movie might be in some form of danger. Here are Jim's observation, when he answered questions during the Toronto Press briefing:

They (the IRA) knew where we were at every moment. So I felt fine. It was a weird feeling knowing that this organisation was looking after me and Kevin in particular, making sure we were ok and respected by everybody. We were going to places we would never dream of going if we weren’t with them. It was a thrilling experience, a thrilling ride.”

“I had a few moments when we were filming in a fairly rough area of Belfast - we were doing a night shoot - and slowly, the crowds grew and grew,” he recalled. “There were kids everywhere stealing our sandwiches and drinking our tea, and they multiplied, they were everywhere. We were doing a scene, and there was a stone that smacked me in the head. There were kids effing and blinding and shouting at me. That was the only time I thought, ‘ok, maybe I’m not as safe as I think I am’.

That's not all, Jim is also playing the lead in Heartless and is part of the ensemble cast for Crossing Over.

What's on your mind? Have we missed your favorite young actor and failed to give him the buzz he deserves? Are there other young actors that should have made the list this week? Let us know your thoughts!

Jim and Rob in the top 2? I'm good with that! Couldn't agree more, unless they were tied for first place! smilies/tongue.gif

Off Radcliffe? Yeah!
I do love Pattinson dearly. He's like my favorite for the next 100 years! He's definitely talented and has a charm that binds people to him, neglect what ever the paparazzi's feed you, I still think of him as amazing. Again, him as Toby Jugg still creeps me out. I like Sturgess too, though he does not have a George Boelyn's facial ( I tell you, George is like drop-dead gorgeous, head to toe!). Though he did play the character well, just not the face of George in my mind. (drop dead goegeous!) Labeouf had effected me more and more now. I mean he has this attraction that felt like I should remember him. It happened the same with Pattinson and Kristen Stewart too, both when in Goblet of Fire and Panic Room respectively. I still remember Labeouf in his movie 'Holes', wow, that was so long ago!

Yes...finally, something positive regarding Rob, he has had a PR week from hell, almost seemingly overnight he went from everyone's new "darling" with such promise of so-much more to come...to being typecasted as a "lush' and "man-whore" not my words!!! Some of the posts and comments on some of the boards actually made me physically ill and just plain ol' disappointed in ppl in general...have I been under a rock?...when did this shift in our society occur that has made it acceptable to so aggressively intrude on lives of celebrities??? Yes they put themselves out there and there is some price that has to be paid...but really the only right we have is to judge them on their work...not on their lifestyle choices...or rather carefully selected pics on certain websites that lead ppl to make certain assumptions and judgements...I didn't mean to make my comment this long however, I really believe that there are so many other important issues out there such as our fledgling economy and the environment to be consumed about such trivial matters as Rob's drinking habits, his pants (don't ask), choice in women (still don't ask) and whether or not he is a gentlemen..ughh..*tugging at hair* it really is time that we stand up to these sites that make their $$$ off these pics and say enough is enough...I love Rob Pattinson, he is a talented actor, his music makes my soul sing and damn it I can spend 10-mins of my day just looking at a pic of him, but that is where it ends...I refuse to any longer to buy into the BS that these sites and so-called fans are trying to sell...and god forbid if Rob has another drink, smokes another cigarette or hell even if he pisses himself in front of 200 hundred ppl, I am still going to go see his films and play his music on my IPOD...long rant winding down...Rob not all your fans are so fickle...now I am off to live my life, but first I am going to look at a pic of ROb...thanks!!!

I'm right with you. My passion is Jim Sturgess, but Robert is right there and I feel the same way. I'll go further...I am not interested in anyones personal life. Be it a president, an actor, a mayor. I am so sick of the media keeping their small mind-set and making young kids have that same small mind-set. All they do is feed them crap and then we wonder why they grow up stupid, can't think for themselves and petty. The public should demand more from these shmucks.
zengirl , September 22, 2008
And there it is...
When did a person's personal life have any bearing on their job or position? Bill Clinton was an excellent example of that. Without in any way condoning any of his personal actions, I was always very curious as to how who he slept with had any bearing on his duties as president. Same goes for any politician who has questionable morals...(of course, when the questionable morals deal with using taxpayer's money to pay for said women, that's different, that's effecting us and the job...)

The same goes for celebrities. I'm so sick of the BS from those who say 'they've chosen to be in the public eye, this is what comes along with it...' That's just crap. These people have chosen a profession, whether it be as an actor or as a musician...they are in their chosen career because they are passionate about the work. Those who do it for the publicity, get the publicity they want. Rob falls into the category of obviously being talented, and enjoying his work...but he didn't do it for the celebrity title. Again, most celebrities don't, just like most politicians don't. So, nobody should hide behind the defense of celebrities asking for this kind of attention anymore...it doesn't work.

Whew.

Looking forward to Part 2, Jed! Ready to get all worked up again! smilies/wink.gif

Oh And I meant to mention...
...to Dara and zengirl - great responses! With you both 100%!

wow...thank you for the supportive comments, I was beginning to think that I was the only one who was feeling this way...sort of like a nudist at a church picnic...anyway I digress..smilies/grin.gif I just wanted to throw Kudos to blearyeyedmesgirl for the comment regarding Bill Clinton..you raised a really good point regarding the really fine line that now seems to exist between a public person's duties and their personal lives...I am Canadian, but have always followed American politics and I have never been able to rationalize how a private act between 2 consenting adults (whether wrong or right) had any bearing on how he ran the country...personally I think that was the turning point...from there the lines blurred and as a society we felt we had the right to know all the details...insert cigar joke here...and the onslaught of reality shows have also massively contributed further to our warped obsessions with wanting to know everything about our favorite celebrities...when is too much, just too much, when will we have gone to far???? Here's to being a fan minus the "antical" part...and here I thought I was done ranting for the day...sigh I'm just going to pull up my pic of ROb it will calm me down...smilies/wink.gif

What???????
ROBERT PATTINSON SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!!!! WHO'S THAT LOSER TAKING RP'S PLACE????

Can't wait for Twilight!!!!!!!!!!
KelseyCullen , September 22, 2008
PS
I'd like to say I'm VERY HAPPY and SATISFIED that stupid Daniel Radcliffe was booted off, making room for adorable Shia.

But Robert should still be number one. He is the number one hottest and sweetest and wonderfullest guy out there...except perhaps Orlando Bloom .....hmmm, who's hotter? smilies/smiley.gifsmilies/grin.gifsmilies/wink.gifsmilies/cool.gif
KelseyCullen , September 22, 2008
*indignant expression*
Robert Pattinson should be first on that list. I mean, gosh, I don't care about that guy in the first place............................Rob should be #1.

He's so perfect as Edward Cullen.
Sophie , September 22, 2008
Robert is only in second place?????? He should be first, I agree with the other people here about that!!
Robert Pattinson deserves to be number one. He's just so awesome and hot and adorable.

Twilight will be awesome, and RP is awesome as Edward.
Jackie , September 22, 2008
Rob should be on Top!!!
I am just basing this observation from the number of comments on articles containing Rob and he should still be in the No. 1 position.
spuddevaughn , September 22, 2008
totally not into ANY of these three
Dan Radcliffe is top of my list, absolutely. Jim Sturges might be next, but i have not one iota of interest in that transformer fellow or Twilight people or story!
betty , September 23, 2008

My favorites are Rob and Shia. Rob is an amazingly diverse actor and Shia is just so much fun to watch on screen. I remember Holes and I can still sing the rap from the credits. smilies/cheesy.gif I remember the Greatest Game Ever Played-which doesn't seem to be one of the movies that Shia is very well known for. I loved it though. smilies/smiley.gif
I like Jim Sturgess, just not as much as the other two.
silentcamisado , September 23, 2008
Rop # 1
Rob should be the #1, always
TwilightFan , September 23, 2008

I'm reading all these comments and know what's really funny!
Neither of the top 2 brits could give royal sh@@#t if they were on this list or not. Isn't that a hoot! smilies/cheesy.gif
zengirl , September 23, 2008
...
Come Robert Pattinson fans, give him more hits so he'll be number one again next week! smilies/smiley.gif don't let those stupid papz incident affect you (or him for that matter)
Not that I have an problem with Sturgess, he's awesome, but I'm all for Rob (not Edward Cullen, period.)
Monica , September 24, 2008
ROBERT PATTINSON
... he is amazing in how to be. He is a great actor. Really becomes the character. And if it means anything, kids... Robert should not be rated 1, for his "hotness" but for his talent.

So c'mon guys lets get ROBERT TO NUMBER 1!
hayley , September 24, 2008
Spunk on #1!
Rob is very ttalented and should be #1! He's an amazing actor and I can't wait for Twilight^^
Minh Thu , September 25, 2008 | url
Robert Pattinson
Glad Rob is still on the top 3. But I like it when he's at #1 where he belongs. Thanks Jed!
Bev , September 25, 2008
Jim Sturgess
I am so happy that Jim Sturgess is #1, though I seem to be in the majority. I love Twilight and can't wait to see Rob in the movie but I really love Jim. He's such an amazing actor and seems like a great person. So...
Yay for Jim! smilies/grin.gif
Sami , September 27, 2008
Oops
I meant I seem to be in the minority, not majority.
God, I always make mistakes. lol
