In our initial Launchpad article, we're once again featuring Robert Pattinson. Surprised? Excited? Disappointed? Whatever your reaction, I'm hopeful that what we have to say will be fresh and new to you. - - - Spotlight Article updates: First of all, you might have been wondering why there is no Robert Pattinson profile at tMF? Well, that may be the case at the moment, but there is already someone writing his profile and it's definitely going to be something you want to watch out for. We tend to limit profiles of actors to certain favorites, and while we might have missed on a lot of talented and exciting actors, we tend to give you more in-depth coverage of the tMF favorites and we put lots of time and effort into promoting them. Says our writer (who shall remain nameless for now):
As is the case with most of the profiles we already have - they are quite personal. They are written by passionate fans who know the importance of loyalty, but who still strive to maintain credibility by being objective about what they are writing. There are lots of praises of course, but it is always done in good taste. He reminds me of Heath Ledger: Blasphemy? Ledger's fans might accuse me of that! But when the late Heath Ledger was just starting out, he also had his share of criticism and rejection and bad press. There was a time when serious moviegoers remained decidedly unimpressed by the young actor from Australia. Regarding a GQ cover in 2003: a letter was published one or two issues later, criticizing the editors of GQ for publishing an issue with Heath Ledger on the cover. The writer went on to say that Ledger was all hype and would not last a year in Hollywood. That writer must be eating his words now for making such a ridiculous statement! The same things may have been said of Robert when it was announced that he had been chosen to play Edward Cullen in the much-anticipated Twilight. I'm sure he must have felt frustrated and beleaguered by the reaction of some of the fans. Things did calm down when the author herself gave Rob her support. I'm sure he'll be smiling when the movie is finally released and people get to see how he performed. Ledger gained respect from his peers and the film industry in general for maintaining his integrity and not succumbing to the dictates of agents to play sugary teeny-bopper roles. Robert seems to have chosen to go Ledger's way - the hard way. I base my observation on the roles he has chosen which are his answer to critics who might be judging him as a handsome actor with no real talents or prospects. Like Brokeback Mountain, the upcoming Little Ashes has a gay-focused theme. There might be parallels between the two movies, but I think both movies are unique and offer different perspectives on relationships. - - - Robert Pattinson's acting style, what do you think? I started a thread at Rob's IMDb board and I think I ought to add this here. Aside from the intelligent discussions we had, there are certain replies I wish to feature, in a sort of summary:
Here are my favorite replies: From lifeisfast: I think he is still finding his own like you mentioned, but he does have some inherent strengths that he plays on. Firstly his physicality, he can portray so much just through a look or a movement, but this also ties into the delivery of lines because movement and expressions tend to make the delivery, one cannot be necessarily separate from the other. Secondly he can immerse himself in the characters world and seemingly take on the mindset of the character. From what I have grasped from his interviews he finds something he can relate to and take from his own life and experiences, whether vicarious, or true to himself, for each role. He also does research on his roles, for Little Ashes he read lots of Dali books and really studied up on the person, same goes for Twilight. He sequestered himself away from family and friends, read the books, and even wrote journal entries in character to get what he needed to portray that character accurately. He tries to make sure he grasps what the role is asking of him. He certainly is something special... there is something with him I cannot put my finger on but keeps me captivated. I also think we will see his acting ability put to the test, and his versatility shown, in How To Be and Little Ashes, both of which I feel, interestingly enough, I am slightly more excited to see than Twilight. - - - By goldenboots: He actually needs to work a lot now to get plenty of experience. Find his feet and test himself. Not all performances will work but its important for him to see how far he can push his skill. His versatility is awesome - he can radiate a warmth and vulnerability in performances like Daniel Gale and also a chilling coldness as Toby Jugg. Edward Cullen needs a bit of both so I'm fascinated to see how he does with Twilight. - - - By blearyeyedmesgirl : Facial expressions, body movements, gestures...all key points to what separates the good actors from the extraordinary actors. There are few out there who can do what Rob does, which is to make us feel for the character. Heath Ledger was that type of actor... There are much more to read and you can browse the thread here. - - - The movie I look forward to the most: We've featured Twilight quite extensively @tMF. At the start, I had no idea that these articles would become some of our most popular ones. I got the chance to make friends with some of Twilight's most ardent fans. I was also fortunate enough to do an interview with the makers of How To Be and this gave me an inside look at this particular film. Taking everything into account, I would have to say that it's Little Ashes that is at the top of my list. This indie movie has all the makings of a great film. While time alone will tell if this will be so, I have the feeling that the intensity and depth of the actors' studies of their characters will make this one of Robert Pattinson's acting showcases. Salvador Dali is not an easy character to play. As with all artists, he has many dimensions to his character. I'm no expert in art or painting, but looking closely at some of Dali's work, I registered a lot of emotional responses - there is something striking about his work. It's very unusual and quite unforgettable. It has the power to hold you back and keep you looking at the paintings for long hours. There is also something bizzare about his paintings. If he can transform something into art, then Dali is an extraordinary individual. I think Robert Pattinson will need to be extraordinarily good to portray a credible Salvador Dali. Because of this, I find this movie the most challenging and most exciting among Rob's upcoming works. - - - Support tMF by clicking these ads! Article continues below... - - - tMFs Picks: Top Robert Pattinson sites. Just like any other fans, we have our favorites. In getting the freshest and most relevant news about Rob, you need dedicated admins and regulars who constantly search the web for the latest news. Sometimes you can get the most entertaining and insightful articles and commentaries from a source that is at best, informal. Of course, there are advantages that both official and unofficial fan sites can offer. Here are our favorites (in no particular order): Pattinson Online: Joy, Isabel and Tara are three of the most energetic and fun-loving admins you could ever find operating a fan site. Mr. Pattinson is lucky to have such dedicated young women spreading so much buzz about him. Like tMF, Pattinson Online is operated by people from all over - Thailand, Canada and the US. We're also proud to be affiliates, so there is some personal bias here, but go take a look! Just visit the site and see what they have to offer! Rob's IMDb Board: Have you ever wondered what goes on inside an IMDb board and whether all the nasty news about trolls and bitches populating these boards are true? Well, I did and yes, there are lots of IMDb boards you might want to visit if you'd like to ensure that your day is totally ruined; ones which will almost automatically put you into a bad mood, so those are the places to go if you like to torture yourself... But there are exceptions, and one of the most engaging and entertaining boards @IMDb is Robert Pattinson's. It still has its share of trolls of course, but you'll enjoy the theads and just like any fan, you'll get your daily dose of Rob and will come back for more. Robert Pattinson Fan: This site describes itself as 'The first and largest fan site' for Rob and they have proven many times that they have what it takes to give fans what they want. The admins are also an all-girl team, led by Amy and Michele. The fan site adds a special dimension with their LiveJournal feature called Pattinson daily. RPatzDaily Community @LiveJournal: I have not been too interested in reading anything from LiveJournal before, but things have changed and what excites me about the active communities at LiveJournal are those dedicated to certain actors. This Robert Pattinson community will make it worthwhile to stay at LiveJournal for hours! Spunk Ransom's Robert Pattinson Myspace: If there is such a thing as organized chaos, then search no more. I always find the design templates at MySpace to be a bit over the top, and if you're using a slow computer, you might become a victim of a PC crash, but there are rewards for those who are patient. One of Rob's MySpace sites is that kind of special place - chaotic but cool, fresh, versatile, friendly and hip. Robert Pattinson Life: Steady on the news and the buzz, Robert Pattinson Life is dedicated to anything and everything Robert Pattinson. Imagine 52 posts just for the month of August and still counting! Finally, Robert Pattinson Online: There are three awesome fansites dedicated to Pattinson, and this one would surely rank among the best- featuring the latest news and updates of the actor's movies and more, be sure to visit the site regularly- it's definitely worth it! While this is not the definitive list, we're quite sure they are some of the most impressive and credible sites dedicated to the actor. If we've missed a Rob-related website, please let us know! - - - Finally, let's answer the questions: Why is Robert Pattinson getting so much buzz? Is the talent deserving of the hype? The buzz for Rob is due mostly to the heightened awareness of moviegoers for Twilight, that's a given. Anyone can see that. The big question is actually this: Is Robert really talented? Let me answer the question by quoting the maker of the film How To Be:

Actually Jed I'm incapable of writing anything sensible right now as your article actually got me all teary. Thats partly down to your well researched article and also because Rob has got under my skin and his career means a lot to me. Seeing key points layed out like that in the article brought a lump to my throat. I'll go away and clear my thoughts but the very fact Rob has affected me this hard and I'm no screaming fan girl perhaps says what needs to be said.

Looks of a classic leading man but the skill of a character actor
Every actor has to start somewhere even Johnny Depp worked on films like a Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm extremely impressed with Rob's project choices to date. He was 20 when he played Toby Jugg in the Haunted Airman which I regard as a very difficult role so was performing to a high standard at an early age so I'm certain that as the years go by we will see him reach the very top in the industry. I'm not sure the association with the HP franchise is a good thing. Its certainly been a two edged sword. Twilight has helped secure a wider fanbase and will open doors for him but its his talent that will keep casting directors comign back for more.
I think its very unwise to underestimate his talent. If I say he is a great all rounder it might be perceived that I dont think he's great at any one aspect of acting but I mean it as a huge compliment. I see Depp as a great all rounder - able to play comedy and drama with equal skill. I can visualise Rob as villains (like a Riddler) as well as hero's like Perseus in Clash of the Titans. Roles I think he could and should play. As mentioned on here before he has the looks of a classic leading man but the skill of a character actor. Its a win win in my books.

Not just a pretty face - extremely talented
I would say that his stunning good looks mislead people. Particularly if they've not seen his other lesser known work. Its a problem a lot of gorgeous and talented actresses have. Being taken seriously if you look so attractive. Still I dont think he should hide those looks but just use them to his advantage.
I think tMF has done well to see beyond the Twilight hype and realise he is a very talented actor. Sites on film tend to shy away from actors in hyped blockbusters incase it hits their credibility but wonderful actors can be in blockbusters too! The new young actors to take the place of the Depp's of this world need to come from somewhere so why not this super talented individual. Why not a Brit for a change. As actors like Depp and Damon take older roles we need new young blood to come through. I would definately agree that what Pattinson has is the ability to play characters with warmth and also more chilling individuals. In all honesty most actors tend to find it hard to get warmth across on screen. Stop and think for a moment - who out of the top actors can do it. Exactly -I can only think of Hanks. I think Pattinson could have an amazing career. I really do. His versatility is key.

The Sex Appeal of an Old Hollywood Star like Brando/James Dean
Someone posted this on tMF a while ago and it resonated with me:
"As well as a ridiculous amount of talent he is amazingly sexy. Infact I cant think of an actor working today who radiates such sex appeal. Not even the big names like Depp/Di Caprio/Bale. He reminds me of the old sexy Hollywood movie stars. Brando/James Dean. " I think Rob exudes a hot sex appeal but its combined with a vulnerability and sensitivity which is completely beguiling. Someone said he was timeless and thats so true. I'd definately say he has the sexual magnetism of an icon like Brando or Dean. But hopefully without the tragic flaws!

I'd actually like to see more Buzz for his projects
Rob is getting a lot of buzz despite the lack of PR for his new independent films. Someone just posted this on his IMDB page and I couldnt agree more. Imagine the buzz if these films were marketed properly.:
"I must admit the producers of Rob's smaller films are beginning to annoy me. The lack of pr savvy seems criminal. Surely with small films like this they need to be sharp and on the ball for any marketing opportunities. The producers of Parts Per Billion must by now realise the buzz around Rob. Ok they probably have an extremely limited budget but there isnt even an IMDB page on it for people who are curious to start chatting. Not even a press statement about the film explaining the basic plot. I'm not talking huge early marketing campaigns here but cheap and cheerful stuff so that even journalists who want to write about Rob and look up his new projects can see what Parts Per Billion is all about. Seems pathetic to me. Little Ashes only put up a page when fans wrote to the producers direct and suggested it. It was fans who found the full synopsis to Little Ashes on an internal Pdf file. Dito extra information on the project via old site mentioning the script writers. Then of course we have the fan in Spain taking photos. Hardly a coordinated marketing campaign is it. Producers moan at the lack of opportunities for independent films but they hardly help themselves with a laisez faire attitude to PR."

Powerful and knowledgeable fanbase
I could do a little rant about the lack of PR for Little Ashes but I'll calm down and focus on Rob.
One thing that strikes me about Rob is his fanbase. I think people in the industry are expecting the majority to be rather excitable school girls who are not that discerning. But actually after frequenting lots of sites/forums what comes across is a very knowledgeable large core of fans who know their film and know what makes a top actor. Yes of course they are attracted to Rob but there is an underlying respect for his talent.(I think the press are a bit behind in that aspect). The sites dont spend a lot of time talking about looks etc but his acting ability and future roles. There's a hunger for information on projects with fans even reading up a lot about Dali for Little Ashes. That I think shows me that Rob has a very healthy fanbase, one that will stick with him through his career. They arent fairweather fans. He's even got me tapping away on my keyboard in support and thats not my style. I dont want to recap whats been said on the thread which highlights him with two other british actors but I would re emphasis that his versatility and charisma is very important. He's also quite a character in real life and we need those exciting unpredictable individuals as our movie icons. Just thinking of Depp brings a smile to my face. Rob does the same for me.

A true craftsman
Is Rob really talented?
Without question. Blunty I dont bother getting worked up over actors who I dont admire. They can be in huge blockbusters or the prettiest looking guys on earth but it wont wash with me. If I dont respect them as an actor they can forget it. Rob has impressed me greatly. I first noticed him in The Haunted Airman and while the ending does confuse a lot of people I was very taken with Rob and his terrific performance. If that had been on US TV it would have got him an Emmy nomination. Someone quite rightly commented that it was a brave performance and I agree. He strips the role right down and its amazingly subtle. You nearly feel you are watching him in slow motion. Its very effective and I've honestly not seen a performance quite like it. When you consider he was only 20 and with so few performances under his belt its downright amazing. I think he's a craftsman, an actor who continually works at the role in his head and it may not be there in rehearsals from day one but its worth the wait. I wont go on and on but I'm very confident in his ability. I'd agree he needs to work a lot now to really test himself. Find what he needs to work on more and then just watch him shoot to the top of the industry.

I completely agree 100% with this article.
I love that tMF has focused not just on Twilight but on his other films. While I was not a huge fan of him in Harry Potter, I saw The Bad Mother's Handbook, and he absolutely captivated me. He strikes me as one of those actors who is an actual "actor", he's not just "in a movie" like a lot of people in Hollywood are. He takes the time to research the people he portrays and really gets into character. He doesn't just show up to set, say his lines, and then goes home. I'd say it's fair to say that he is going to have a huge career ahead of him and that he has the star quality of Heath as well as James Dean and Marlon Brando. I'm eagerly anticipating Twilight as well as How To Be and Little Ashes.

Feed the machine; don't let it eat you!
After all the ups and downs in 2008, Twilight will be a classic Hollywood catapult for Robert. The buzz is getting louder, and we're still three months out from the premiere and mainstream media. 2009 is going to be a roller coaster for this incredibly charismatic actor - fun and scary at the same time.
As a PR professional and fan (read: not in the majority demographic), I do hope pieces are being moved into place to protect his career as well as his personal life. After reading many boards and forums, my first PR instinct is not only to sell his upcoming projects to a larger audience (get those dollars rolling now, producers), but protect and craft Robert's own relationship with the public. I think his agents are going to need to do a 180-degree turn, or at least a 90-degree turn, very quickly, if they haven't started already. The hype for Twilight could not only eclipse his solid indie career, but also keep him from going to the grocery store without stalkers in the cereal aisle. With careful guidance, he'll be able to continue the big-screen career as well as the indie films he seems to truly enjoy (personally, I can't wait to see How to Be), along with whatever else he wants to do. After his reaction to the screaming masses at Comic-Con, I have to wonder if he's prepared for the tidal wave. This kind of viral publicity is what every performer wishes for, but then needs to use wisely!

...
As a Twilight fan, I was linked to this article from a twilight website. As much as I am a teenage fangirl, and as much as we squeal about him and obsess over his hotness, we actually do care about him the person. One thing that struck me about him is his genuine personality. Everyone can relate to him, and he is honestly funny and he cares for his roles. I was worried about how he would take on Edward Cullen, because I saw Edward as a bit of a tortured person, and other teenage girls just like to see Edward as perfect. But he got that and he sees inside the characters minds, and he makes himself the character. I have seen him in a couple of his other roles, and I was impressed. When you are barely 22, it is always a feat to be able to handle roles like he has, and I think that with time, and roles chosen for what he wants and enjoys, he can become whatever he wants. I have no doubt in my mind that he is talented.

And thank you to whoever said that Twilight fans are actually mature, and can focus on something else besides his looks. As a Twilight fan, that means a lot that people can actually look at us and see us like that. We are so often seen as immature little teens, and it's really hopeful that we can be seen like that.

Overwhelmed - (Warning: this will be LONG!)
I think I'm speechless...and that doesn't happen often.
I feel much like the first comment poster, in that, I find myself overwhelmed, but touched and moved. There's so much to say, so much to comment on in this fabulous article. But where to start? Well, let's talk tMF, first. Jed, you rock. Love the Launchpad. Very appropriate that the first article should be about Robert. Next up, the Heath Ledger comparison. 'Heath ledger was that type of actor.' Obviously, I've noticed similarities between these two actors before. Heath was an immensely talented actor, and it's true like Rob, did receive criticism in the beginning. But of course he proved them all wrong, and so will Rob. Rob had to have felt, as you said, 'frustrated and beleaguered' by fans negative reactions to him winning the role of Edward, but instead on focusing on that, he simply said he 'hoped he would change their minds' once they saw him in the film, and that it was more of a challenge and 'kind of exciting.' What a way to spin it to the positive, Rob! A great outlook on something that would have brought other actors down. To quote Jed, "Sometimes good acting is a gift because not everyone can transform himself into somebody else and make people believe." Absolutely. Not everyone can do that believably. Robert can. He possesses that rare gift. He's definitely still learning, and is the type that even 20/30 years from now, when he'll be in the ranks of the greatest actors to have been, I imagine he will still think of himself as learning. He seems to have a thirst for knowledge, both in educating himself and in his acting. Little Ashes. As many have agreed, this film excites more than 10 Twilights! In part, probably, because we do know so little about it. But in larger part, because I agree, this film will be among the "the most challenging and most exciting among Rob's upcoming works." I started a small PR project in IMDb called, 'Letters for Little Ashes.' This started when I contacted a PA at Regent Releasing, (http://www.regentreleasing.com/) and they mentioned some tactics in how to help Independent films get attention, especially at local movie theatres and with their distributors. The post and the drafted letter can be found on most Rob fansites as well as on IMDb, here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm150.../113451300 But, that's not enough...there's much more to be done regarding this film...and I'm ready to take it as far as I can! And even though we have more information on How To Be, we can't forget about this Independent of Rob's either. As far as I know, they still need a US distributor for its release. After tMFs awesome article with Oliver, I'm all the more excited for this Indie as well. Both of these Independents of Rob's mean more to me than Twilight ever could. And yet, I will always look fondly on Twilight. It's giving Rob the opportunity to finally be noticed. Now, it's up to him and his people what to do with the attention. While all the attention is not really what he 'wishes for,' as he once said, before all the Twilight hype, in regard to if he wants to be famous, “No, I can’t see any advantage to it, because I’m happy with the life I have now...” But, that being said, he is famous now...and with that comes the responsibility for him to continue choosing strong roles and to stay true to his belief system. I have faith in him in these aspects, and expect many more amazing things to come...both in his acting and music. Well, this was almost as long as the article itself! But, I get inspired...and the accolades are well deserved! Thank you, Jed, for such an amazing article on this brilliant actor. I can't wait to see what else you have in store!!

I dont think the press regard Twilight as a quality piece of work so while it gives Rob a lot of attention he's also dragged down by it too. Its actually a hard role to play and I saw one review of the script stressed how hard it was to get right. So while I suspect he'll pull it off brilliantly he wont get the credit he deserves. This sounds pessimistic but I'm just being realistic. Still it will make sure he has a better choice of scripts to look at which is the main thing.
His choice from that new batch of scripts is critical for his career. So far I've loved all he's done (even if his best roles have been TV productions) and I cannot fault any of his performances and believe me I'm hard to please. Even from the glimpses of him in How To Be you can see he gives an assured performance and even the fragments of him in Twilights show he's in complete control. I must admit I'm frantic to see Little Ashes. Its the type of project I love and feel this is a key performance for Rob to be critically accepted. Until its released I suspect there will be some snipping from some areas of the press. Thank you tMF for giving Rob a chance on here and letting fans have a forum to express their admiration.

Rob reminds me for the world of a young Hugh Grant, the same alluring shyness that is so often construed as being aloof. Speaking as a much older fan I don't necessarily get blinded by his boyish charms, more his incredible abilities to leap from one very serious role to a more light hearted one with complete professionalism.
I think Rob has a big future ahead of him, Hollywood will always have work for the quintessential Englishman, especially one with his talent. I look forward to that future.

Robert Pattinson - Extremely Talented
I was first introduced to Robert as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire. Robert’s portrayal of Cedric really stood out to me. He brought so much to this role & I was instantly drawn to him. I became attached to this character & experienced such sadness when he died at film’s end. Robert’s portrayal of Cedric stayed with me long after the movie had ended. I instantly wanted to know more about this talented young actor.
Since then I have followed his career & have seen & enjoyed all of his work to date. His versatility is one of his many strengths. He can go from playing the shy, awkward & sweet Daniel Gale in The Bad Mother’s Handbook to playing haunted, wheelchair bound Toby Jugg in The Haunted Airman. They are such completely different characters but he plays each of them so convincingly. He is just so believable as both. I truly believe that Robert has the talent & ability to portray any character in any film & do it brilliantly. Robert has the amazing ability to be able to convey so much with just one look. A look that says more than words ever could. His movements, his facial expressions, the way he can make the viewer care so deeply for the character. He completely immerses himself into his character & becomes that character. Every line he delivers you believe. He has you captivated from start to finish. These attributes are what make him such an outstanding actor & make him stand out from the rest. Thank you so much TMF for this amazing article. You truly recognise Robert for the extremely talented actor that he is & not only promote his role in Twilight but also his 2 other upcoming films Little Ashes & How To Be. I think all 3 films are going to be wonderful & his performance in all 3 will be of his amazing standard as always. I am so excited to see them all. Little Ashes in particular I think will really be the one to make people sit up, take notice & realise just how amazingly talented Robert Pattinson really is. I look forward to all the amazing things that are come for this amazingly talented actor & wonderful person.

THIS was an excellent article
Thank you Jed for this excellent article. I am excited for the Launchpad and look forward to what is awaiting us on it.
blearyeyedmesgirl & you pretty much summed it up for me. What more to say? I look forward to watching him grace the screen with Twilight, Little Ashes and How to Be. I have much respect and admiration for Robert Pattinson and the roles he chooses to play. He challenges himself and thus, challenges us as moviegoers (and fans) to critique his work and be honest when giving our reviews. To date, there isn't a body of his work that I have hated and that is rare. I continue to look at his movies not as a "fangirl", but as if I'm viewing a work of art. He will continue to impress all of us. As I've stated in many post, he is TIMELESS.

I agree about the nervous energy comparison with Whishaw. One thing the wonderful Whishaw lacks though is an ability on screen to get the audiences to warm to him. I'm not alone in thinking Rob can pull out a performance that really hooks in the audience and makes them care. Call it charm, call it charisma, call it brilliant acting. Whatever it is he has that gift.

"One of Rob's MySpace sites is that kind of special place - chaotic but cool, fresh, versatile, friendly and hip."
I don't care for the MySpace layout either lol but thank you SO MUCH for featuring my site! Rob is every bit worth it and sites like yours are what is going to make him the next big thing.... and not in a heartthrob kind of way. This man has range and I think films like Little Ashes are going to display that open a whole new world for him.

I'm curious to see whether Pattinson will appear on Variety's top 10 to watch. I think he deserves to be there. He's an exciting find and I'm looking forward to the day he can shake off the HP tag. Wow
I have to choose my words carefully now, as I am so happy you’ve chosen Robert to spotlight in your first Launch Pad. There is so much I want to say, but I don’t want this to turn into a full blown essay.
Of course, I think he deserves this honor and all the new attention he is getting! Robert is certainly more than just a pretty face; he has some serious talent to back it up with! He seems to be a natural born talent, with just one look he can express so much that words aren't even needed, sometimes it's downright heartbreaking. He is constantly challenging himself, portraying new and different characters, and putting work into the small details, which are really apparent when you watch his portrayals. He is also refreshingly different from the Hollywood type out there now, and I think this will only increase the attention he is going to get. I hope he doesn’t let small amount of negativity get to him, there is a lot more positivity out there, more than I think he even realizes. I must say while the screaming young fan girls tend to get the most attention he has a lot of support from some wonderful people about his age, like myself, and I even know some older fans that respect his talent and see a bright future for him. He should realize that he has a lot of fans that will support him in any future endeavor, who see him as more than just the roles he plays. I agree that his career so far has been comparable to Ledger’s in a few ways. Firstly, Robert like Heath has had his share of negativity and rejection, but people are starting to wake up and take notice of him. Secondly, I think he will and has, gained more respect for taking challenging and different roles. Robert has taken the road less traveled in his work, and I believe he should be applauded for the diversity in his roles, and for taking the challenge of work he has done so far. I believe now is the time for his new indie movies, How to Be and Little Ashes, to start capitalizing more on the new attention Rob is receiving. I think these smaller productions will showcase more of his versatility and prowess in acting. In Little Ashes, Dali is a complex character, an interesting challenge; I am intrigued to see how Rob portrays him. As for How To Be and Art, from what I have seen so far I really think I am going to enjoy this movie, just Robert’s opening line from the trailer had me hooked. I am excited to hear and see more from these two movies, hopefully very soon! I have no doubts that he will be in some wonderful productions in the future; whether he chooses to do blockbusters, stays more with indies, does stage work, pursues music, or even a mix of all of them, I am sure he will be excellent. I am certain he will captivate many more with his talent and charisma, in the near future! Whew, if you actually read this all, thanks for taking the time… I know I tend to get long winded. *I also wanted to thank Jed and the wonderful people at tMF they have been really wonderful to Robert and his fans! Thanks also for including my quote, I am touched.*

Rob is a much better actor than the film he'll be made famous through but then the same applies to Di Caprio with Titanic and Heath through a Knight's Tale or Depp through 21 Jump Street. Rob's future roles are critical but there's a line to draw - you need to do enough high profile work to keep in the public eye and not only focus on small low films that test you. Obviously high profile roles that test would be the ideal but they dont come along often.
I think he needs one high profile role to embed him with the public then he'll have cut himself some slack and can focus on quirkier, maybe less popular roles to really test his acting metal. I think he's a wonderful find.

How can you have doubts about him?
I say, he showed to all of us his talent on HP and Vanity Fair, how can i say about the bad mother's handbook?
It's clear that he is one the most talented actors of the actuallity, then, why to doubt about him? let him show how much he can give us as actor. Twilight México: http://twilight-mx.blogspot.com supports Robert Pattinson. -Migo (Twilight México Staff)

Ledger comparison is legit
I made this comparison on his IMDB board a few days ago and people seemed to agree.
I equated the two actors because of the way Heath seemed to shy away from cameras in his personal life and how they both seem to be taken aback by sudden fame and sex symbol status.

Talent
I firmly believe that Robert Pattinson deserves all the hype surrounding him. When he recieves a role he truly steps into the soul, the very being, of the character he is playing. He's very serious about his acting and it's very important for him to try and get all the right emotions across. He tries to focus on everything. His voice, the way he carries himself, his facial expressions. Every lift of his eyebrows, every smirk, or shift of his eyes matters, he makes it matter. Makes sure that we take notice. He works hard and is a good example of what real acting is all about. Hats of the Robert Pattinson and I hope his life is filled with success after success.

Wow
Wow, that's the only thing that comes to my mind now. This was a good article. Thank you. I don't know what else to say, I'm overwhelmed as well. I'll just say thank you.
But I really dislike the comparison with Heath Ledger. He was amazingly talented sure, but he's dead and so it's a bit creepy ....

Rob needs to secure his posiiton as a leading man in films before delving into more obscure roles seen by few people. There is need a balancing act and he and his agent needs to work together to build a secure platform. The three strikes and your out rule still applies in Hollywood - try telling Mat Damon - he was very near to losing his career. The Bourne film saved his butt.
He needs a true Hollywood blockbuster role for 2009 before he goes back into the twilight franchise.

Pattinson is an extremely talented actor. Someone called him a craftsman and I'd agree but whats even more amazing about him is that its coupled with a spontaneous feel. I dont know how he does it. The only example I can think of is Paul Schofield in A Man for All Season - its a beautifully crafted performance but has a spontaneous feel to it.

Sex apeal
Lets not forget sex appeal as a factor. He's a skilled actor but its tied to sex appeal that leaps off the screen. That shouldnt be devalued. Its an important quality for a leading man to have. A lot of actors mentioned on tMF dont have this important characteristic.

Thank you for spotlighting Rob. I really enjoyed the article. I am a diehard Twilight fan so I have to begin by defending this wonderful book and upcoming film. I believe the Twilight fans have embraced Rob because we have watched him thoughtfully take on a role that we know is a very difficult one to play. Edward Cullen is a complex character who is beloved by thousands of readers. This is not a shallow, teen queen story. Rob has been candid and genuine in discussing his approach to the role, wanting to give his best performance for Catherine Hardwicke, Stephenie Meyer, and the fans. Some of his other roles may be more grounded in the real world, but I assure you the character of Edward Cullen is fraught with humanity. Basically, I disagree with others who think the Twilight role is fluff. I believe the hype from the Twilight movie will bring him more attention from film makers and possibly afford him some acting opportunities he may not have had otherwise. This can be a good thing, as I firmly believe that his choice of roles from here on out will determine whether he becomes an accomplished actor or a teen idol. Johnny Depp’s career, as others have said, is a good example of that. I also believe that Rob is garnering an adult fan base from his involvement in Twilight that can help propel his career. To answer your questions, I think Rob is a talented actor and the hype is definitely deserved. The fan frenzy over Rob is not just about the way he looks. He is certainly adorable, but it is his demeanor and genuineness that are most endearing.

Hi Jed, firstly I want to say "thanks so much" for such a wonderful article. You really made my day
. I can't seem to put a finger on why Robert's performance seems to get to me more than any other actor's. Days and months (and years) after I watch him in a certain role, I remain mesmerised and enthralled by his performance. I personally love him as Toby Jugg. As everyone mentioned, he was only 20, but I was really impressed by his depth and vulnerability on that role. When Toby was in distress, I really could feel it too. He really made watching a movie a totally different (and much more enjoyable) experience. I can't wait to see "How To Be" and "Little Ashes". I watched the clips on "How To Be" a few weeks ago and I almost cried. I really doubt that the film will make it to Australia though. Anyway, your article got me teary eyed too. I don't know why I get really sentimental about this actor. Oh, and I really like the comparison with Heath Ledger. Heath was a great actor. I still can't believe he's passed away. THere are so few actors I really enjoy watching on screen and he was definately one of them.

Crazy! But when I saw the E!THS of Heath Ledger, Robert popped in to my head!
I agree with the past of Robert having a similar start to Heath Ledger, everything so far is kind of mimmic to
Heath's life. even the parto of Heath not liking to be in the spot light like Robert. In do feel Robert is going to have a great career, and just like I have said before, he needs to keep his dead straight and not let "fame" get in his head, and so far, it looks like is not... and that is great! Good luck for him and his career. As for Heath... R.I.P

Perfection? No. But playing it
He's playing Edward Cullen. AKA, the perfect guy. They wouldn't hire some stupid inexperienced actor to play him. They did hire Rob though, so he HAS to be extremely talented.

Rob is very Talented!
Rob is very talented actor! I loved him in the small part he played in Harry Potter, he left us wanting for more... I'm so excited that Rob is playing Edward Cullen, I think he is the perfect actor for that part. He is very handsome and very talented. Rob will get very far...
As a Harry Potter and a Twilight fan, its nice to see Rob play Edward. Its nice to see how the fans love him and how they have accepted him. He was great at Cedric and he will be great as Edward! Best wishes Rob! Isabel

I get the feeling he (Robert) is not sure of how good an actor he is, and that is telling us everything. He is able to keep working at perfecting his craft and trying new things! His mind is in the right place, he is still learning and working at what he likes and I think he will be one of the best to come. He seems to be a natural at acting.

I'd love tMF to have an interview with Rob so we do learn what makes him tick. I'd love to really find out from him how he crafts his performances. It wouldnt matter to me with most actors but I do want to understand how Rob gets to grips with a role and a lot more about why he changed his performance of Edward on the first day of shooting. he must be so bored with the interviewers he's had to deal with to date.

Reminds me of a young Depp
Rob reminds me of Depp in the integrity of his choices. How to be and Little Ashes and even Parts Per Billion from what I;ve read are wonderful role choices.
He's also very versatile like Depp and has a presence which makes you focus on him. Rob's ability to translate through actions (even the most subtle facial manipulations) is simply amazing. Just like Depp. In every role he plays, he breathes life into the characters he plays. They are all very diverse and he doesn't seem to be afraid to play anybody.

Rob reminds me of River - devastating and talented
apologies for the length…
I am very intrigued by Rob and am excited to experience every one of his upcoming performances. I’ve seen everything to date except How to Be. I agree with what someone wrote earlier about sex appeal. The man has it - in spades. OMG. He's beautiful! And he should use that as part of his gift - even if that means hiding it for effect when necessary (think Jude Law in Road to Perdition or Johnny Depp in Sweeny Todd). Also, while I think the comparisons to Heath Ledger are completely apt, Rob reminds me so much more of River Phoenix! He started acting young and in lighter fair and building toward more intense or offbeat roles. I don’t know much about Rob’s music; but that’s another parallel I see with River (he fronted the band Aleka's Attic). Like River, Rob's exudes vulnerability in every role he plays.....even when the character calls for confidence or aloofness Rob makes the character human by imbibing it with an underlying fragility. It’s compelling! It makes us not only swoon as viewers, but believe that the character is a fully realized concept. That’s the magic of taking something from the script to the performance - and Rob does so preternaturally.....or is it aplomb - or both if possible. People write about how Rob prepared for Edward Cullen and it reminded me of River’s last interview, Usually, I write the detailed biography of the character. For me it's the only possible way. To play a sad scene, many will only for example think of their mother's death. I consider it's a mistake for an actor to cross the boundary that separates him from his character. Because then you impose him your own references. That's why I need to have landmarks that only belong to my character. For example, for "My Own Private Idaho" I wrote a lot. And once the movie was done, I burned it all. It’s so Rob! While I hope Rob achieves super-duper–amazing success, and can pick and choose the roles meaningful to him - I hope he stays humble and outside the Hollywood scene. He’s too precious a gift for us movie lovers for that! He's lovely.

Robert Pattinson - Extremely Talented
This is a repost of my comment that I posted earlier. After going back through & re-reading my comment I realised that I had made a few word errors due to the fact I had written my comment at 2am! I also wanted to add a couple of things. Just wanted to repost it the way it should have sounded
He completely immerses himself in his character & becomes that character. Little Ashes in particular I think will really be the one to make people sit up, take notice & realise just how talented Robert Pattinson really is. I look forward to all the amazing things that are to come for this extremely talented actor & wonderful person. I am so plesed to see he is getting the recognition, praise & support he truly deserves.

...I can't think....
I came to this article through a link at a twilight site.
I have to say, I was not expecting this type of article. Most that are about Rob seem to portray him just as the 'new heartthrob', feeding off the mania for the Twilight film. I am so pleased that I was able to read an article about Rob as an artist. His acting is just that. Art. I don't know what to say. I was strangely, as some have posted, emotionally effected by this article. Everything that is coming to mind has been posted already, so I'll just leave with this. Rob is a great talent. I am sure that in years to come, he will be our 'depp', or along those lines. I am proud to say I was a fan of the man before his major popularity. I wish all the best for him, and can only hope that he can deal with the fame that he is now acheiving. He deserves it.

It took you long enough
Robert has such an acting talent that it not describable by words. I've seen films that he has participated in and what I really like is that his facial expressions. He doesnt have to say his lines to know that he is feeling pain or that he is elated. Thats is what I really like about him. Yes, he is good looking but he is much more then just a pretty face.
,
August 22, 2008
An Excellent Start...
...for the LaunchPad and Rob's blossoming career! Thank you for this excellent article. I echo just about everything that's been said here. Rob has such talent, an old soul who seems to be able to see the absolute truth of any character he plays and the world in which that character lives. How else could he convey so much with simple mannerisms or facial expressions? I find I often need to remind myself that he is only 22.
Suz, thanks for reminding us all of River Phoenix....when I read your comment I wondered how I hadn't thought of it before. Depp, DiCaprio and Ledger have always come to mind since they all have taken the similar path of shying away from the pretty boy roles Hollywood threw at them in the beginning. Thank you again for this superb article, I love to see Rob portrayed as the gifted artist that he is, not just the handsome face.

Promising
Rob Pattinson has what it takes to rise to the top. He is already a wonderful actor, proving he can play versatile roles. He's managed to stay under the radar for the most part - with the exception of his role in Harry Potter and of course, his upcoming role in Twilight. His other more unknown roles are fabulous and really demonstrate true acting talent; I can't wait for him to show the world what he's capable of in the future.

Thank You!
This must be the best researched article about Rob that I have ever read. Thank You!
I noticed Rob, of course, as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter. I am an avid fan of the books, but until I saw Rob in the movie I am a little ashamed to say that I did not realize the importance of that character for the books. Rob literally brought Cedric Diggory to life for me. And that is not a minor feat, being that he is not a lead role. After that I set everything into motion, pulled a lot of strings to get my hands on his other movies (some of which are only available in the UK). And I can honestly say that from his minute role in Vanity Fair (which landed on the cutting room floor and can only be seen in the Deleted Scenes on the DVD), to Toby Jugg in the Haunted Airman and Daniel Gale in The Bad Mother's Handbook - his versatility is amazing. He immerses himself into each and every character and you are never tempted to compare one to a former role of his, meaning that you won't get the feeling "oh that is Cedric Diggory" when you are watching Twilight! I think his acting style is very physical. He also is not afraid to change his looks. It seems that he is willing to do whatever it takes to immerse himself in the character he plays. From different trailers I have seen I really can't wait to see him in How To Be, and, of course, in Twilight. The latter especially - there are different instances in the trailer where he expresses so much with just a facial expression, without any words. I know the book very well, so I know the scenes and the emotions and sentiments that are present in the scene. Rob conveys them without words - and you can see it in just a trailer! (I compared that with the fantastic ability of the incomparable Alan Rickman). I am so happy that Rob finally gets the attention he deserves and I hope that this will propel him into superstardom. I hope and pray that he will have the wisdom to continue to wisely choose his roles and not give in to any pressures. Thank You again for this well written article!

Brilliant!
Of course I totally agree with Holly's comment.Every actor has to start from somewhere and the comparison with Heath may be more realistic.Nobody is famous and internationally known from the beginning, some "footsteps" has to be followed till the "glory" comes so I believe that although so young,Pattinson will definitely become famous(more that he is now).Twilight,Little Ashes and How to Be are only these "footsteps" he has to follow...

While Rob's turn in the Harry Potter franchise could be discounted as a role which shows his star potential infact I'd say it reaffirms it. Mike Newell the respected director took a shine to him and speaks of him with warmth clearly seeing the potential in Rob and in the scene where Cedric gives Potter a clue to help him with one of the tasks I think you can see the charisma you need to be a top film star. He also delivers the lines in a more unusual way than expected even then showing signs of his attention for detail in characterisation.
However its the Haunted Airman which I think is a tremendous performance. I'd agree if it had been on US TV it would have got a nomination. Is such a mature performance from someone so young. He fits effortlessly into the late 1930's. I;d love to know if he went away and come up with that characterisation if if the director gave him pointers because the languid delivery is very unusual. Its hypnotic. Rob's hypnotic. I agree that all the exciting film actors have been around for years and in the case of Heath bless him no longer around. Its time for a fresh face to join the ranks and I'm sure when Rob gets a few more roles under his belt he'll be up there with them. He carefully crafts his characters, doesnt repeat variations of the same character and is unrecognisable in each role. Whoever said he's a character actor in a leading man's body is so right. All the actors I admire are the same Matt Damon, Depp, and Bale. I would say thought that Pattinson has the capacity to get under my skin more. He's a warmer guy. Thats why I think this buzz is happening. Fans have got very attached to him. He's a unique character, one that fans want to follow and enjoy his career from afar. Its going to be an enjoyable ride.

RPattz's absolutely in the zone!
He is amazingly talented.
I was actually stunned when I saw him in "How To Be" and speechless in "Twilight".He can act. He REALLY can. He has the talent but He didn't have chance to show it off. Now, his time has come, he is going to be something huge. We all have seen what he's done so far in "Twilight". He is Edward. Not only super good looking but amazing talented. I'm so excited about "Little Ashes". He is going to be so good, so huge.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who feels this way!
I am excited about this young new talent. I think there are many textured layers to Robert Pattinson's acting. He can play the pretty, but he can also play the heart as well. He is a physical actor and there is much to be seen through his use of voice, facial expressions and movement. He thoroughly seems to inhibit each character he plays. I am so glad that he continues to push his craft in such a variety of roles. Keep us guessing Rob! Your fans are truly loyal because you have yet to disappoint!

This is fantastic, I seem to always find very decent (more than decent, actually) articles written about Robert Pattinson in here.
People keep on saying that he's one of those young actors to watch out for, but I think he's there already, simply by looking at his choice in roles. Genius.

August 23, 2008
...
He's not at the very top yet but he will be in a few years. As others have said he needs to get a lot more roles under his belt. Nothing beats testing yourself in various roles, even if at times you mess up. But he needs to take his blockbuster roles carefully because if he picks unwisely that can upick all the good he does in his small indie films. He needs to keep varying the films. A blockbuster followed by an indie and so on. If he does too many indies the public will forget and casting directors too. They are a fickle bunch. Why do you think the top actors dont stop working.
A young leading actor needs to be seen. He also needs the support one one key director. That always helps. Just look at Di caprio, Depp and Damon - all have favoured directors. He needs a Hobbit size film role.

Rob's quote in the latest Empire magazine sums him up:
"When you read the book...it's like 'Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself.' He's the most ridiculous person who's so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn't do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he's a 108 year-old virgin, so he's obviously got some issues there." Rob's refreshingly different from most actors. He's not trying to look like the pretty boy leading man. He cares about getting the character right Creating a character that you believe in. I think he's a fantastic talent. I hope directors realise what a formidable, clever actor he is.

I look forward to Pattinson developing a legacy of work to be remembered for a years to come. So far he has chosen wisely and I think he is clever enough to keep the balance right between huge movies and smaller character pieces.
My only concern is tha he may be led astray by the Hollywood excesses. I really hope that doesnt happen. I;d hate him to waste hsi talent.

Anyone who doubts Robert's Talent...
need only to see The Bad Mother's Handbook and The Haunted Airman. Both are wildly different roles, yet Rob plays each with honesty and realism.
He puts such care into the details with each character that they come to life on the screen. There is no awkwardness to his performance, no feel that the director is waiting in the wings ready to poke him with a stick so he responds to his cues like some actors I have seen recently. Even in Ring of the Nibelungs, when his co-star was pausing between lines like William Shatner, 17 yr-old Rob was speaking his lines with ease and the proper tempo. He makes it look easy, when I have no doubt it's very hard. I, too, am very much looking forward to How to Be and Little Ashes. I hope I can play a small part by convincing the owner of the local independently owned theater to play them. I'm trying. We'll see if I succeed. *crosses fingers* Thank you for the lovely article. I think we all hope Robert continues to do well, make the right choices, and takes care of himself so we can enjoy his work for many years to come. Izzy

Definitely Deserves the Hype
One of the best things about Rob's performances is that when I'm watching him act, I completely forget that it's Robert Pattinson, or any actor at all(and that is no small feat)... He just completely morphs into whatever character he's portraying. He even looks different from role to role. In Harry Potter you can practically feel the goodness and naivety radiating out of him. And just the little clips of How To Be convince me he's insecure, lost... and everything else the role entails.
Aside from his obvious natural talent for acting, Rob is captivating. I just can't look away from the screen when he speaks, whether in movies or interviews. No other upcoming actor shines the same way... or seems as charmingly self-depreciating. Rob definitely deserves the hype.
