In tMF's Top 50 most anticipated book-to-movie adaptations, City of Ember is at the top of the list. I really look forward to watching this film and seeing just how far they deviated from the novel, or how faithful they remained. What makes it even more exciting is that Saoirse Ronan (so wickedly good in Atonement) and Harry Treadaway (Control, Brothers of the Head) will play the two leads. - - -
![]() - - - Jeanne DuPrau's City of Ember is the first in a series of four novels, collectively known as the Book of Ember. While both Ronan and Treadaway's characters in the books are twelve-year olds, I hope any changes they make will remain subtle and uncomplicated.

I was not surprised to see Ronan grabbing the role of Lina Mayfleet. I don't think there are any other young actresses capable of playing the role with such authority. Says Ronan describing her character:I think she was a very responsible girl for her age. She’s only about 13 and she has to look after her younger sister, Poppy, and her granny who isn’t at a good stage to look after them. So she has to take care of them, meanwhile go to school and then start her new job as a messenger. And she’s very responsible and very determined. I think once she sees something and knows that it could be important, then she’ll try to the end to find the answer.I was quite surprised to see Harry Treadaway getting the nod to play Doon Harrow. Not that I'm not impressed by the young actor... I'm actually a fan of Harry Treadaway and his twin brother Luke, who is also making good. Regarding his role, Harry has this to say: Doon’s been raised in a way to ask questions and to constantly try and discover things – he’s very practical. His dad makes lots of things and he thinks if he can get into the generator, he can work it out and look at how it works and eventually try and make it better, make it sort of work better...More coming up! Ronan has been praised for her role in Joe Wright's latest film, Atonement. She'll also playing the lead in Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones and in Gillian Armstrong's Death Defying Acts. Harry also has other projects on the go, including Love you more and The Disappeared. x |
