Monday, 25 August 2008

I just read the October 2008 issue of Empire magazine (without having to actually buy it) and this happens to be what Robert Pattinson was quoted as saying:

When you read the book...it's like 'Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself.' He's the most ridiculous person who's so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn't do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he's a 108 year-old virgin, so he's obviously got some issues there.

- - -

Sex Sells period. One of the issues there, is of course, SEX. This will be the first time I'm going to put the focus on the word, but I think it has been there from the start. A lot of movies became quite popular because they deal with sex- not just love scenes, but hints of it.

One of the biggest selling points of Twilight is actually the absence of sex. Many of Twilight's readers have mentioned how Stephenie Meyer captured so perfectly the type of emotions young girls need to go through. Today, it has been reported quite frequently that young girls and how they deal with sex is often one of the most serious issues raised by parents.

What makes this book even more interesting and so popular is that the author tried and succeeded in creating a character that is so vibrant and so true and so honest. Many readers really feel that they're Bella, a young girl who happens to fall in love with Edward, someone so surprisingly different; yet that's what makes the love even more intense. As his nature calls, will Edward finally bite Bella and drink her blood and eventually kill her? Or will he sacrifice his thirst and suffer even more? Readers like me can hardly wait, and the hint of sex is all over! Yet it feels so natural. How can an author do this to me?

Catherine Hardwicke was right on target when she remarked about vampires being sexy:

Vampires are sexy. They're not like some creepy old zombie with flesh hanging off them, they're sexy. That whole neck thing, you want one to come up and bit you in your most erogenous zone.

There will be Gold: Empire Magazine's presumptive title for their Twilight article has something to do with the title from a previous movie, the acclaimed PT Anderson masterpiece, There Will Be Blood, yet I find it quite wrong. It should have been Gold and when I said gold, I meant the box office. Don't get me wrong...I know there will be blood--lots of it--as the story has many vampires who roam and kill. It's also a horror movie, as you all know.

While Empire still put the movie's release as January of next year, all avid fans of Twilight are already looking forward to its November release. Talks of box office results are not too far behind, and as we have said so long ago (yeah, we're one of the first to say this), it will be a box office candidate to be reckoned with.

To quote what I said in an earlier article:

A bona fide box office hit! With an infusion of fresh funds, I have to say that Twilight may not have problems when it comes to promoting the movie. There are already reports that Summit is really concentrating its efforts towards the completion of the movie.

While the promotional and ad strategy for Twilight will be very important , especially for those who have not read the book and are outside the so-called Twilight fandom, there is one big advantage the movie already has: the huge Twilight fan base. While this is not a 100% certainty, there is no doubt regarding the fans’ dedication to Meyer’s book. This has been proven time and again and once the movie is released in November, we’ll find out just how committed they really are. [ read more ]

In the latest IMDb MOVIEmeter, for just a short span of 4 days, Twilight has already moved up the ranks. As we reported earlier, Twilight and Harry Potter are the only two movies in the top 10 still in production, while the rest have been shown. Here's the latest results:

- - -

- - -

And what do you know? Twilight has moved to #4. Here's what I said just days ago:

Among the current Top 10 (as of 22 August 2008), two movies that are still in production have already climbed the rankings, even beating those movies already shown or just released in theaters. There is just one conclusion: both these films have a high level of public awareness and we're talking about Twilight (ranked #5) and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (ranked #7).

If that is not an indication of its popularity and a good indicator of a strong box office results, then tell me otherwise.

What's on your mind? Let us know what you think about this article.

Box Office Love...
Well first of all, I'm not surprised to see Twilight moving up the movie-meter ranks. I was surprised to Harry Potter move down.

As for the Empire Article? Overall, a good article. They have some of their info wrong, calling Bella a 14 year old girl, instead of the 17 year old girl the book and film know her to be for one thing. And then Edward having been changed in 1916, when really it's 1918.

But, they had more good points than incorrect ones. Especially Robert's latest quote...the guy is just too funny. His outlook on Edward was spot-on, especially thanks to knowing a bit more about Midnight Sun.

The article definitely just continues to prove Robert's perfection for this role. He got Edward from the beginning, so much so that it showed in his audition.

I don't know about other fans, but I love getting inside information like that...behind the audition info, insight on Rob from Catherine...that in and of itself makes for a great article!

And a great write-up on it, as always, tMF! Thanks for giving the fans what we want, ten-fold!!

Thanks tmf once again for never disappointing me on the lastest from Rob! I read the Empire article as well and I just have always appreciated Rob's take on Edward Cullen. I'm counting the days down like a completely hormonal teenager. They don't call us Twilight Moms for nothing!

The musical chair movement of a number of film's around the new date of Twilight's release may effect its takings. Quantum of Solace is now out a week before Twilight. Any thoughts on whether twilight shoudl have stuck to the original date.... My concern is that Summit will relax and not invest enough money in PR for the film from now until its release.

Will the readers of the book actually support the film. I not sure its a given cert.

But I just have to say, all that screaming at the comic con thing, was embaressing- Not all twilight fans are little girls screaming, guys and moms love it too- and we are more mature than that.. I wasnt there- thank god!!
But It was just Childish.

Anyways, TMF, thanks for all this.
Twilight isnt getting enough Coverage.

Thanks!
I cannot wait for the Twilight release! I loved that Rob quote. He's always so interesting in interviews. Never boring like most actors. Loved the article.

Jed I wanted to ask, what # is Robert this week in StarMETER?
Priscilla , August 25, 2008
...
i agree with Priscilla, he IS never boring in interviews, there's always a funny thing he said, or a funny face he made. i also agree with Orlaah, i'm 20 years old, soon to be 21, and if i had been there at Comic Con, i would have been SO embarrassed for Rob as well as the rest of the cast and Catherine and Stephenie, because they're trying to answer questions that these people are being asked, and there's just a whole crowd of people, mostly girls, SCREAMING at them! it was SO RUDE!
StephLorenzo , August 25, 2008
...
Twilight will continue to rise. Everyone attached to it will see more focus on them and that is GREAT! I am very excited to see my favorite book brought to the big screen and Rob as Edward. Sex? Well, the eluding to sex is the best part. I love book and movies that don't have to spell it out. I have a good imagination! smilies/wink.gif I also am glad that I will be able to take my daughter to see the movie and not worry about inappropriate scenes.

108 year old virgin? Yeah, definatly some issues there!
Fullows , August 25, 2008
Nice article!
I do think it's the absence of sex and the addition of intimacy that really make this film/relationship sexy. These 'kids' make a moral decision to wait, but what they do explore is normal and hot- even though one of them is a vamp. :-)

And I do hope the cast realizes some of this fandom is much more realistic- we're not all 13 year old screaming girls who think Edward is flawless. Not only that but we appreciate a good plot and good acting- THAT is what is going to make this film golden. I'm 31, in a happy relationship- NOT a Twilight Mom (not that there's anything wrong with that) but I think there's this idea you either have to be a squealing girl or a depressed adult stuck in a relationship- not true! We just all remember that wonderful feeling of falling in love and it's captured SO brilliantly here.

I ♥ you TWILIGHT smilies/kiss.gif
susan , August 25, 2008

First off, yes, Rob couldn't have more correct. The 40 year old virgin is nothing in comparison to the 108 yr old virgin, and look at the issues Steve Carrell exemplified. On a more serious note, Rob completely became attuned to the reality of Edward's mentality (I didn't mean to rhyme). Who wouldn't hate themselves for wanting something so passionately and have that fear and acknowledgment that you could destroy or taint something so precious? I have no doubt he would be manic depressive. I certainly would.

Secondly, I am not surprised to see that Harry Potter declined in the ranks and Twlight moved forward. Think about it, most HP fans were probably pretty frustrated about the postponement of the film. Add that to the reaction of Twilight moving up in release, and you have some common sense results.

of course twilight the first film will be a box office hit

however, only hardcore twilighters will watch it over and over again, to watch and drool over the actors--but not be rational about the integrity of the acting, cinematography and so.

from the trailers--the screenplay is forcing the characters' lines too much. the special effects and cinematography shots are TV-quality, not movie-quality.

Whilst MTV is fuelling the great battle between HP and Twilight film and their franchises and their fandoms, we know for sure that the entire HP series are better potential as films, in terms of plot and emotions, easily captivating the audience.

whereas on the other hand, New moon, eclipse and BD will be bad films. Whilst twilighters will do anything to fulfil their cravings because of their obsession with the books, and will do anything to kick Harry's butt, the rest of the saga as films, will go downhill because they BARELY have anything happening. So hopefully, Summit doesnt go greedy, and choose to undertake this path.

And the battle between the books...it is quite obvious that HP has better textual integrity. AND it was inevitable that HP gets knocked off the best-selling list. Just cuz Twilight knocked it off, doesnt mean its the best series out there. The stupid media brainwashes people. Hint? e.g. MTV.

Harry Potter FTW!

I am so glad you guys are giving Twilight and Rob and Kristen so much attention as well! I have to say, as much as I love Rob, I wish he didn't hate Edward! It was weird to read that he said that. As a girl and a fan it's hard because Stephenie created this perfect guy (Edward) from Bella's perspective and all us fan girls are asking ourselves (in the back of our minds- quite frequently I would dare to guess) if a guy like that really exists and if Edward is a realistic character. The fact that Rob doesn't like him and that Rob is a guy makes me think that Rob considers Edward an unrealistic character. I totally understand that Twilight is from Bella's perspective and I know that in reality, in the Twilight universe, Edward is not really perfect, but it kind bursts my bubble anyway. I still love Rob though! He is the perfect Edward, even if he dosn't much like the character he is playing.

amazing points
Hi Susan,

thanks for visiting and let me reply to your comments!

Whilst MTV is fuelling the great battle between HP and Twilight film and their franchises and their fandoms, we know for sure that the entire HP series are better potential as films, in terms of plot and emotions, easily captivating the audience.

tMF has its own agenda, we don't follow other movie blogs, we're very pro-active, we initiate. While there were a few articles that mention both Hp and Twilight here @tMF, we acknowledge and realize that both films (and series) are totally different. The comparison stems from the fact that both have huge fandom. That's the end of our comparison, we're not a movie blog promoting mainstream cinema, we're into arti films, those movies that are not promoted by the likes of MTV and celebrity gossip blogs.

whereas on the other hand, New moon, eclipse and BD will be bad films.

People have short memories. There was a time when many already made the conclusion that HP sucks, the sequels that is, even the first movie. If you read some history, those companies involved in the production and distribution of HP were also 'poor' then, they became rich and powerful coz HP made a killing at the box office.

Summit can go greedy, it's a given. Why? So that they can produce kick ass films including the sequels of Twilight.

As a Twilight Mom, I'd like to point out that we're overwhelmingly NOT "depressed adults stuck in a relationship!" No one loves a love story more than someone in love ... witness the whole matchmaker mentality of some women.

Great article. I'm looking forward to seeing this story on film. I'm interested in Catherine's interpretation as well as the actors' portrayal of characters I really care about.

Thanks for spoiling us with all of these great Twilight articles! Keep them coming! smilies/smiley.gif

I'm a 31 y.o. Twilight fan, and I echo the sentiment that post-teen Twilight fans are hardly "depressed adults stuck in a relationship" - how ludicrous! Twilight is just an amazing, absorbing story.
cheekyj2002 , August 27, 2008

I'm totaly agree with Susan's comment. Every word. The quality of the movie will not be as a good movie, it seems exactly as a tv-movie. Cinematography seems to be horrible and I'm not going to say anything about special effects. And yes, I'm a cinema student, so I understand something about that.

I'm a part of Twilight fandom, I suppose, but I'm not a rabid fan, so I'm going to see the movie just once and that's all. I'm not interesting in the fact that Summit will make the rest of the movies. I don't want to see them, there's no plot to make them. And there's no quality to make them.

And, please, Twilight is not the only book/series/movie with a lack of sex. That's not a "privilege" and that should not be the thing why it's known. Sex is part of life, don't try to corrupt it.

And, just for final, "kick ass films"? Wait. A movie with an impressive box office it's not signal of "quality", that will be a joke xD. I don't mind on the money that Summit could get, seriously. That's not my problem. I prefer a GOOD movie with a "minimal" box office, before a movie with tons of millions. That's all.
Jana , August 27, 2008

Susan

Actually for many hardcore HP fans the movies don't live up to their expectations. Order of the Phoenix in particular sucked big time in the acting department (Many a discussion has been made with regard to the animated feature in all the movies, Miss Watson eyebrows). Just because a movie may have had good cinematography or there isn't a 30 million dollar budget for Spfx that doesn't automatically make it a bad movie. Yes a vast number of the Twilight fandom will be there to watch Robert Pattinson, but he's also a damn fine actor and that on it's own will gives the movie some credibility, in my view at least.

The other books as movies, well they each take their own path and I've seen lesser books made into successful movies. If Summit make a pot of gold out of this venture then kudos to them. They deserve it.

ok so first thing we can all see that rob was the best edward ever. he understood edward from the begining. second thing twilight isnt a horror movie its like a romance/drama movie

Sad
I loved Twilight, the WHOLE series, but I do see making further movies difficult. I WANT them too, for sure. Eclipse would make an AWESOME movie, but New Moon and BD, I can't be positive. Each would need major script re-writes which, while making it a better movie, will likely upset the saga's fanbase.

I'm afraid for this movie. Afraid because I'm not sure they knew what they were getting into. The script I'm sure will be great, It was written by the same who writes Dexter.. an AWESOME show. As far as special effects, I'm sure fans are going to be disappointed. I think thats why they went back to film additional scenes. With all this hype, they HAVE to make it better than just a visual satisfaction of Stephenie Meyer's thoughts.

Why is it that everyone says that Edward is 108 years old? He is 107! (B-Day: June 20th 1901)

To Jana and Susan,

Just by seeing a trailer or a short clip does not say that the film will have terrible Cinematography or special effects, acting, or CGI! You also said your I quote "a cinema student" not someone who really knows what you are looking for. I am not a silly teenager either. I am 46 year old and I say lets give the movie a chance before condeming it. I myself have been pretty surprised at some of the movies I thought would be bombs and turned out to be a great movie. Just sounds like a lot of nit picking if you ask me.

Oh, ROB!
Rob. Rob, Rob, Rob.

Well, of course I love him, but:

1. Edward, as of last July of this year, is 107
2. When Bella & Edward met, he was 105
3. 105 and a virgin? No, quite unappealing till you realize 1) Edward is forever seventeen. He will never age; his skin will never sag, his hair will never thin out and he will never look older than his age. Emotionally, and mentally (for his time) he is also seventeen. He was born in 1901; to have sex out of wedlock was considered beyond scandelous. 2) Isn't it kind of sexy, though, when you consider it? Edward spent his whole life WAITING for Bella, not accepting anything but her. The fact he abstained for the love of hisexistence, a girl he could never meet till he was almost in about 90 years of his "new life"...if Edward wasn't a virgin when he met Bella, he wouldn't be Edward.

Hi Jana, you completely missed the point. Let me quote you and I will directly argue with what you said word for word.

That's all.

The Dark Knight is a good example of a box office success and I'm pretty sure almost all the critics agreed its a wonderful and impressive film. Its both 'viewable' and 'bankable'. Titatic is also a big box office hit and won the Oscars. Argue with me about this two!

Why should a movie be good ONLY for your viewing??? That's your point in saying you prefer a GOOD movie with less people who've watched it? You're a selfish moviefan.

Of course, you don't mind the money, it's not yours is it? My point is that Summit can use the money for strategic purposes- it may have something to do with streamlining their management and staff, hire consultants, have more money for promotion, etc.
jed , August 27, 2008
RPATTZ FTW!
I'm fairly certain that that comment made Robert Pattinson 600x cooler than he already was. If such a thing was possible.

Empire's Release Date!
I saw in the above article that Empire have the date for Twilight as January. I would like to clarify that they're not wrong (for now). Although Twilight is being released in November in America (at which I hope to see box-office glory)the current UK release date is January 9th smilies/sad.gif
And as Empire is a British movie magazine, it's only natural that they will put down it's UK release date. As a Twilight fan in Ireland I am hoping that Summit seriously consider moving it's release date in UK (as films in Ireland are released on the same date as the UK). I think it's a tad unfair to push it forward three weeks for America (and some other countries too) and leave the rest off the fans going off our heads with impatience smilies/angry.gif
