The IMDb's Movie Meter is one of the most important basis in determining the popularity of films. Together with StarMeter, these two make up IMDb's ranking system that determine the actors and films currently receiving the most interest among the millions of IMDb viewers. - - - - - - Says the IMDb:
Among the current Top 10 (as of 22 August 2008), two movies that are still in production have already climbed the rankings, even beating those movies already shown or just released in theaters. There is just one conclusion: both these films have a high level of public awareness and we're talking about Twilight (ranked #5) and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (ranked #7). - - - What specific facts can we mention that truly made the rankings so significant? Here are some of them: - - - There are over 180 pages of commentaries in both the IMDb Twilight and Harry Potter boards, making them among the most active boards in IMDb. Most of the threads are created minutes apart, while replies to these threads are quite numerous and also posted just minutes apart. You can just imagine how many viewers are frequenting the boards regularly; - - - Over 175 links have been approved by IMDb relating to Twilight, while Harry Potter got almost 100 links to its credit. Can you imagine just how many websites have featured these two movies? But aside from mentioning statistics, regular movielovers and fans of both Twilight and Harry Potter, have been consistent about one thing: the interest of fans are undeniable and extremely huge! On the StarMeter rankings, Twilight's Kristen Stewart is currently ranked #11, while Robert Pattinson is #14. If we based the rankings in Most Popular under 25, then Kristen is third while Rob is fourth. Both Kristen and Rob followed Megan Fox and Shia LeBeouf who ranked first and second, respectively. The StarMeter rankings, however, is more liquid in terms of instances when someone gets higher in the ranks. - - - Tell us what you think! As a Twilight or Harry Potter fan, why do you think these movies are way up in the MovieMeter rankings, beating even those films already shown in theaters, why so much interest and buzz? - - -

Twilight shoudlnt let up with the PR though. Awareness is high because of Comic Con and the last book's release but there's still plenty of time till November so they need to keep on top of the PR.

Rob's ranking was #6 the week before and #1 for under 25 so it shows Comic Con made a difference and that its a very fluid system. Again supporting my arguement that Twilight needs regular PR items to keep people interested.

Good News
I think they are beating other movies out because they simply have so much buzz around them, and they both have loyal followers. Thay also have some major talent portraying the characters which people are excited about and want to see. All of this genuinely creates interest and people frequent the pages to talk about the movies and discuss new information coming in daily!
I'm excited Twilight is getting more buzz! I like both series but my favorite actor Robert Pattinson is in Twilight, so I must say I much more excited to see that than the Harry Potter movie, though I am sure both will be very good. I also think Twilight is a platform for Robert to get more credit and gain popularity, so Twilight getting more attention is good for him. I hope some of this buzz does trickle down to his other upcoming roles of Little Ashes and How to Be as they will demonstrate only more of his versatility and talent!

Hmmm, it's a really interesting question...it comes down to their fanbases, so big and dedicated. That's for sure.
But, why the huge following and fanbases then? The two stories definitely reach out to younger audiences; the under 25 bracket seems a fair way to categorize it. The fact that they did start out as books that captured audiences of all ages first, probably helped a good bit too. With HP, this is the 6th of the 7 books, (and 8 movies) so it's definitely had the time to accumulate more and more fans. Twilight, however, is a bit more of a surprise, especially seeing as how it is above HP on the IMDb Movie Meter. This book only came out 3 years ago, and is the first of the saga to be filmed. I'd say the popularity of this film is both based on The books themselves as well as the actors. We've all had the chance to get to know Daniel, Emma, and Rupert who play the leads in HP. But Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are still relatively new to the scene. And so, the anticipation is greater to get to know these two young and talented actors both in their roles and just as themselves. The intrigue is greater. Twilight is still a shiny new penny...but thanks to Robert Pattinson, I don't think the shine will ever fade!

Timeliness
It's all about timeliness. That's why the top 4 are films that rank on the past weekend's top 5 in the box office. As to why Twilight and Harry Potter are on the list, well because they made the entertainment news recently about the changing of their release dates. Also, Stephenie Meyer's recent release of Breaking Dawn helped boost it past Harry Potter. I just want to know why the hell is 40 Year Old Virgin in the #10 slot (aside from it being a totally kick ass movie)? Maybe because of Apatow's Pineapple Express?

Twilight
Thanks for posting. It's exciting that the movie Twilight is getting so much attention. I think the actors portraying the characters are a big part of that. Robert and Kristen display wonderful and undeniable chemistry on screen from what we've seen. The book is of coarse amazing. So if the movie is half as good as the book, I think it's going to do phenomenal. Nov 21 cannot come soon enough.

They are both amazing book series, and so when you read a book like that it's all imagined in your mind, it's a movie in your mind, but then if someone makes the books actually come alive and out of your mind, it's just overwhelming and you just get so excited and just start conting down the days till it's release.

Twilight
Twilight is the most addicting series I've ever read. HP was the first series that got people of all ages reading again. Twilight is amazing. Please stop saying it is only for tweens. There are thousands of Moms on Twilightmoms.com all over 30 that absolutely love everything Stephenie Meyer writes. So you have a much broader fanbase checking for any news on this series. Both of these series are exciting, creative, and just all around fun.

Why the buzz??
The buzz is currently significant due to the fact that their fan bases are younger and thus more excited. Both Harry Potter and Twilight exemplify a fantasy world, a place or situation that allows us to get out of our daily lives and a storyline in which their audiences can identify with the characters. Both are books and have accumulated a fan base that want to see their imaginations truly come to life. Fans can see if Bella's house is the same as it was in their heads or see Harry and Voldemort face off. Harry Potter has been around for years now and Twilight is new. However, each has their appeal. For example, who doesn't want to have some sort of magical powers or who doesn't want a guy like Edward and to get lose in a story like that is priceless.

We love them!
I think it's the big, adoring, dedicated, devoted, passionate, excited (...you get it
) fan following with boths of these books have. Also a lot of the fans are really active on the internet so it's easy to spread the excitement and make others take notice. Way to Go Twilight and Harry Potter!

November
Let's see how all this plays out once Twilight hits theatres. Though HP and Twilight are no longer going to be released around the same time frame, we already KNOW that there's going to be a competitive air once HP comes to the screen next year.
Lol. Everyone is going to be studying those box office figures through and through.

Box office Comparisons
As for comparing the box office figures for Twilight and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince...it's more than true that there is no comparison. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince will mark the sixth Harry Potter film, and this is only Twilight's first.
If there's any comparison to be made, it should be between Twilight and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, as that was the first film made of the Harry Potter series, and Twilight is the first to be made of the Twilight saga. The Sorcerer's Stone film was released just over four years after the book was published, and the Twilight film will be released just over three years after its book was published... Opening weekend in the States for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone made $90.3 million, £16.3 million in the UK. So, those are the numbers to remember when comparing and studying those box office figures through and through.'

...
I think it comes down to the fact that both Twilight & Harry Potter have such large, passionate & dedicated fan bases. Fans of the books are so passionate about these characters & the stories being told. A lot of excitement & buzz is generated by fans through the Internet. Fans log in to message boards & fan pages each day in hope of finding more news & information. News, pictures & trailers are shared & fans are eager to give their opinions & thoughts on the film adaptations of their beloved books. These are amazing stories that are being told in these books When reading you can't help but get swept up into the world of these characters & they appeal to people of all ages.
I am particularly pleased to see that Twilight is getting so much attention. For me personally, I am extra excited about this movie due to the fact that my favourite actor Robert Pattinson is playing the role of Edward. He is an extremely talented actor & his performance is going to be outstanding. There is so much excitement surrounding this film. People are so eager to see their beloved characters brought to life for the first time & that creates a lot of buzz & excitement.

yeah!
The reason they are up there is because they show both reality and fantasy. The reality are the struggles and mental things they go through in both Twilight && Harry Potter. The fantasy, well, I mean come on! If a girl could choose between a human or a sexy Cullen boy.... what would you choose? Cullen. && what human would not want to have super powers like vampires or magical powers like Harry? I mean I am a fan of both.... BUT i love Twilight 10000 times more. Why? Because there is more sense of reality, something that I can understand. I mean some might think HP is more realistic, but in my case the fact that Bella loves someone she cant have, well I bet more people know whats thats like, then having your parents killed by some Master Lord or what ever. They are also up there because of the fan base.
I think Twilight is doing better than HP is maybe because people like me, I am honestly BORED with the whole HP movies and the story lines dont hold me anymore. I would rather see some hot vampires duke it out on the big screen then watch Harry complain about how his life sucks. so thats why I think they are in the top and why they are where they are! -The End

Hellooo...hot cast = teenage fan base
The whole hype with the two movies is interesting to me. Twilight is so romantic and Harry Potter is full of action. In Twilight, yes there is action, a lot of, suspense, well not suspense, but you get to the point while reading the book where you're like, I want to know what happens next, and I think thats because of the fact that the characters are totally opposite. In Harry Potter everyone is a wizard or witch, they all have a choice to be there or to not be at the school and that brings a lot of problems on to the characters.
In Twilight the vampires weren't given a choice to become this creature and I think that the emotional and physical pain shown through the characters give the fan base a reason to keep reading or watching. And this goes for both books and movies. You don't want to see a movie where all of the characters are happy all of the time. Happy endings are good as long as the characters had to go through hell to get them. I personally don't like the Harry Potter books but I absolutely love the movies. It all has to do with personal tastes. I think Twilight will be up higher in the rankings because of the fact it is brand new and people are curious to see the beautiful vampires and the relations between the characters and the actors, or how the actors become the characters. I am sure harry potter fans will go and see the movie they can form their own personal opinion. You will definately see me at both movies on the opening day but for now I remain a Twilight fan and would choose it over Harry Potter anyday. BTW Robert Pattinson is sooo much hotter than Daniel Radcliff [removed]void(0);

Twilight Must Promote!
I'm glad that Twilight is getting significant attention right now, but that's mainly because of the big built in fanbase (a talkative, dedicated one). I have yet to see a commercial or preview promotion for it and non- Twilight fans need to see some for this to reach its full potential as a fantasy phnomenon.
So come on guys, get some PR out there... a lot of people don't know about comic-con or YA best-sellers.
