Latest News/Updates: We just created a sub-forum to organize all info about the promotional blitz we plan for the movie, How To Be. Hopefully you can all join this voluntary project. Film producer Justin Kelly is busy making some finishing touches on their promo materials and the movie's director Oliver Irving is just about to attend the prestigious Talent Lab at the Toronto International Film Festival, and once he gets back to London, it's full speed ahead. In the meantime, you can still join and do your share in making sure people know more about this amazing indie film.

It's really hard to market an independent film. While the big studios continue to funnel millions of dollars into marketing - - including the proliferation of viral marketing that originated on the internet - - small independent productions find it hard to market their films. However, thanks to the growing numbers of film festivals all over the world, they are getting the chance to show their movies which in turn means they manage to get the attention of people involved in film distribution. There is also a growing audience who are in love with indies and tMF plans to feature some good ones that people can look forward to and enjoy!

The case is the same for How To Be, as we quote a part of their film background:

The budget (under £1m), was raised by hosting investment evenings at which private investors were asked to buy shares in the new company – How To Films Ltd. How To Be was shot in 25 days in early 2007 on S16mm in London, England with cast and crew working for reduced and deferred fees. The film came in on schedule and on budget.

You might ask: How come you get to do another project when you have yet to launch the Little Ashes promotion? Well, we're actually done with the promotional website for Little Ashes and we're planning an official launch this coming 5th September. I hope that's enough to pique your curiosity.

How you can help: tMF is currently in the process of networking a number of websites dedicated to the promotion of indie films and sites featuring Robert Pattinson. It's about time indie lovers and fans of the actor got the chance to join forces and help promote this amazing movie.

If early reviews of the movie are any indication, this film will definitely put Robert Pattinson in another light - that of a serious young actor willing to take risks and explore whatever acting challenges he can get. One of our affiliates recently posted an early review of How To Be, and I quote:

Robert Pattinson was both hilariously awkward and heart-breakingly sad as Art. It was great to see him do some comedy, but I really enjoyed the moments when he had to portray the awkward pain of Art. In one scene, as he sadly attempts to hit on a girl, he bluntly states “I have an erection.” I laughed out loud and then cringed internally as he was abandoned to sit alone. In another scene, he yells at his mother about whether or not she feels guilty for raising such a pathetic loser as himself. When she answers yes, Rob breaks your heart with just a look. I was very impressed with his ability to jump back and forth between silly and serious moments.

Response from the Filmmakers: tMF will also soon be launching a special surprise. It's still in the works, but fans of the actor will love it. More revelations coming soon! In the meantime, while we were corresponding with the filmmakers, I got the great news that an advance copy of the film will be in my mailbox soon. I will then have the chance to write a review of the film myself, and as the last review I did was for the movie Perfume: A Story of a Murderer, you can understand how much I'm looking forward to this one.

In a coincidence of sorts, I was surprised to find out that Oliver Irving, one of the makers of the movie, is currently in Spain. What do you know? Little Ashes was that other Rob movie filmed in Spain! As an update, here's what he said:

I'm in Spain at the moment and then go straight to Toronto for a talent lab and then New York before coming back on the 16th Sept - so as you can imagine it is all a bit hectic - plus only sporadic internet access. When I get back I promise I can focus in on what we can do.

That will give you an idea of the timeline involved in the promotion of the movie. So definitely, tMF will have something concrete and exciting in the coming weeks.

I'll end this by quoting from another early review of the film. I think you'll definitely love this one, and those who already know that Robert Pattinson can act need not be surprised anymore...

The funny thing about this film is in the first 3 minutes I'm saying to myself, that's Cedric Diggory, being the ignorant American I am. But after the 4th minute I could see no one but Art, the lovable and pathetic loser who just doesn't know how to get a handle on his life because he has no one to validate his existence. His parents loath him, his girlfriend dumps him, and his new age therapist seems to need Art more than Art needs him in the end.

How To Be promotion in Australia
Hi Jed (by the way, did you write this article?),
I'm really interested in promoting this movie in Australia and I'm wondering if you could tell me if what I'm doing is helpful or would there be a better way of doing things? Anyway, I have just sent you an email to explain all this. I really think a lot of Australians would love to see this movie. I just have to make the film distributors and cinemas aware of it!

How to Be promotions
Hi Cilla!

I replied to your email and put you in the loop on the latest. I'll have more later in the next few weeks. Oliver is the guy we need to wait for in terms of getting this project off the ground, and we're quite certain once he gets back to London, we can launch something cohesive and effective campaign.

Thanks also for joining our Little Ashes promotional blitz project!

Wonderful! Thanks! It seems like that is all I'm saying to ya lately, but WOW! This is so cool of you! I wonder if Rob, or his people know about all the work you're doing to help his indie films get more exposure. I hope he does. You deserve a BIG thank you from him;>

some recognition
Hi Marsha, I was hoping that his people might have mentioned it. It would be great if he comes here to read some of what we wrote.

I've been blogging at tMF since last year and the first time we did features on Twilight, fans appreciate the effort we put into the research of the articles. We just don't do sneak peaks or write gossip, would love to do interviews, hopefully sooner than later!

I also wondered, this is just me thinking out loud, if ever Ms. Stephenie Meyer even read or her brother, the webmaster browsed our articles, which we started doing since October of last year. I'm proud to say that we're definitely one of the first movie news and review site to do that. In her website, she even mentioned slashfilm, a website that was somewhat critical of the movie. I even asked friends and some Twilight sites that we're affiliated to to add their comments and make sure they are heard. A small thank you sometimes can make even a big difference. It sort of inspired people.

That's what I felt when author Anne Rice made a comment at tMF. But its hard to expect anything, especially if you're going to be disappointed.

How To Be.....patient for these fabulous Indie's!
It's getter harder to bottle the anticipation to see both of Rob's independents...both so different, but with such good stories. Being more involved with Little Ashes, learning more and more about it, is quenching a bit of the thirst, but with How To Be?? I want more! And can't wait to see what more tMF brings us on this particular indie!

I can't wait for this movie! I have heard nothing but great reviews from the people I have talked to who have seen it. Just the trailer has drawn me in, but I am so impatient, I need to see this soon! Can't wait to hear more from tMF

Thank you for this. I cannot wait to see this film, the anticipation for this film is even bigger for me than for Twilight. Just by watching the trailer, I was blown away. Thanks Jed for everything.

Big Things A-comin'
I'm quite excited about this film. Of course, needless to say, I did become aware of it through the Twilight fan communities, but once I did, I was glad for it since I usually don't watch indie films. I haven't seen Robert in enough roles to declare myself a die-hard fan, but I do look forward to what he can bring to the role of Art. Being a musician from an awkward family and having an awkward love life myself, I can already see some of "me" in the character, and seeing as how critics are already praising his ability to connect with the viewer, I'm sure I will love How To Be once I see it and will treasure it as a favorite for a long time. Much thanks to tMF!

hey!
Hey I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help promote How To Be film?

Also, do you know what he is going to be doing in New York?

Also...
Can we be expecting it to be shown anywhere in the United States again??

looks amazing
Like the truest of film lovers I'd prefer to see How To Be the way it was meant to be seen - on the big screen, in a darkened theater & with an appreciative audience. Go Rob! But, at this point I would be silly happy...thrilled even, to at least have DVD access. Any word on a DVD release date?
suz , August 30, 2008
It is brilliant!
I believe that people will be very impressed with Rob in this film. As it is pointed out he goes from silliness to being heartbreakingly vunerable throughout. Hopefully everyone will get the chance to see it soon!

I am so envious
...of the people who have already seen this film! I just couldn't make it to Rhode Island for the festival and it broke my heart to miss out. Sure, 'Twilight' will be Rob's 'Titanic', but it's the roles like Art and Dali that will prove his versatility and hopefully secure his staying power. I'd like to know how I can help with this one too!

Thank you for the awesome job you do here...can't wait for the surprise! smilies/grin.gif

More updates coming really soon!
I know that people are excited about updates, but we need to be a bit more patient. First of all, the filmmakers are doing lots of things and yes, there will be some new materials coming up. I'm very excited and waiting anxiously for my copy and will do a full-lenght film review as soon as I watched it.

As for their release- US and other places, I'll keep you posted.

Film Short suggestion
I agree its his roles in 'Little Ashes' and 'How to be' that will make the industry realise what a fine actor he is. Banish those boring Harry Potter comments for good.

By the way on IMDB someone mentioned it might be worth tFM covering film shorts too. Admittedly this was because fans had seen the director of photography on Rob Pattinson's short 'The Summerhouse' mention on his site that he was going to add a clip of the film
http://www.alexryle.co.uk/summerhouse.html

but it seemed a good idea to me. Didnt Rob's likely new project 'Parts Per Billion' start out as a film short.

Maybe tMF can contact the Summerhouse people to see if they can provide a clip of the short. So far we have only seen clips set to music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZShb1lHzeg
It looks very intriguing but then all of Rob's work does.

Timeline
I was confused at first, seeing that I had already responded to an article just coming out today...but then I realized the word UPDATE was there for a reason! smilies/cheesy.gif

It's reassuring to many to see the 'timeline' as to when we'll see more information. And of course fans should be thrilled to hear of Oliver traveling so much in promotion of this film. So, I think we can be patient a bit longer...and look forward to the Little Ashes website launch of September 5th!

Quoting me and helping out
Thanks so much for quoting my review of How To Be from the RIFF!!! I really appreciate it and look forward to further promoting this great funny movie and more of whatever Rob is doing these days. What can I do??? Let me know!

Indie films need to look at all avenues
An interesting point was flagged up on IMDB yesterday and that was in relation to Little Ashes. It was suggested that as the subject matter touched on a gay relationship that gay websites like After Elton should be contacted as they like to do interviews with actors involved in film and tv series that touch upon gay issues. A lot of people visit After Elton so it would help Little Ashes get a wider fanbase if the producers or even tMF could get After Elton and other gay sites on board. Any way of getting more people to see the film must be a good thing.

So I suppose I'm saying when publicisng independent films producers need to look at the wider picture.

While I'm here has anyone considered approaching Dark Horizons so they give an update on How to be and especially Little Ashes
Lorna , September 03, 2008
All in good time...
Hi Lorna and thanks for the tips. Yes, the project is ready for an official launch. Aside from a comprehensive approach to promoting the film via the promo site, certain strategies have been laid out and will follow a certain timeline.

As any good manager would say - all in good time - there will be people involved in liaison, doing interviews, corresponding, writing articles, administering the boards, and so on.

In less than 2 weeks, we have a functional, inter-active website capable of posting articles in 3 minutes flat. With more than 90 active members, everyone will have their own assignments in the next few days or so.

But wait for the official launch this 5th September and you'll get to see what I mean by a functional inter-active site. We have much to do and we aim to offer something new, fresh and exciting.

As always we welcome your ideas and tips, and we really appreciate it!

Wow, reading this makes me want to see the movie even more!! Thanks for the update! I'd love to help with the promotion of both How To Be and Little Ashes, but what exactly should I do?

I saw this movie last month at the Rhode Island Film Festival and it was really heartbreaking especially for mothers and sons. There was a scene where Art's mom wouldn't even hug him and it went on for awhile becuase he was pulling her to him while she was pushing him away until he stopped. The movie had its quirky and emotional moments. Another sad part was when Art decided to just move out from his parents house and he had to sell his belongings for his new flat rent. For any indie fan or even a Rob fan this is movie you shouldn't miss. Robert performance was very spectacular and he is the ultimate loser you feel sorry for throughout the movie.

How To Be and Robert Pattinson
I'm from Indonesia and I am dying to watch this movie. They don't release indie movies very often around here, usually it goes straight to DVD, but I really do want to watch it in in the theatre. I want to see more of Robert Pattinson's work, he seems to have incredible taste in choosing his roles and portraying them to perfection. Not to mention how versatile of an actor he truly is. I really do want to help promote this movie around here!

How To Be -Spain-
Hi Jed!

I want to promote "How To Be" in Spain. I would like to do a website with all the information (photos, interviews -in spanish- and videos subtitled to the spanish). Then the people who speak Spanish would know much more than the movie.

If you want, you tell me!!
