It's actually not too hard to look for unusual 'under the radar' films. You just need to have lots of patience and be familiar with those movie distribution sites that feature lots of trailers, plus be aware of who's making waves - - especially those who are winning 'breakthrough' awards in their own countries. Life for Sale: Swiss star Joel Basman was recently chosen as one of this year's European Shooting Stars for his performance in Life for Sale (Luft Business). Says the jury:
But don't just take their word, see the trailer below. I love the music and there is something truly 'surreal' about this film, as the jury thought. - - - - - - Review from Festival Daily: LIFE FOR SALE aims to extend some deep-meaning messages to its audience. But it also forces you to think long and hard about what exactly it's trying to say. It's certainly a commentary on modern society, and seemingly faith and spirituality too. Or maybe it's more about inequality and desperation. It's difficult to say; there are a lot of big issues being tackled, but we're left without firm conclusions on any of them. This is no reason to dismiss the film however; perhaps the point is, in the end, that there are no definitive answers. The film follows three homeless young men who each sell a part of themselves on an online auction website in order to get some cash. Filou's soul sells for an extortionate amount, and despite the credibility of this situation, the link between his act and the profit-driven society we live in, the idea of selling one's soul to the City, is clear from the start. Just like the other two men, Filou suffers for his decision but redemption is eventually found in an unlikely source (I shan't give it away) but perhaps the significance of this saving grace is lost due to cultural dissimilarities. It's called La Belle bête. The film is based on the first novel by Québécois author Marie Claire Blais, La Belle Bête (Mad Shadows), published in 1959 at the age of 20. - - - - - - About the movie: La Belle Bête is a powerful study of the conflict between beauty and ugliness, hate and love. The story revolves around three main characters. At the center, Patrice, a beautiful but mindless youth stands gazing at his image in the water. Around him move his ugly sister Isabelle-Marie, and his frivolous mother Louise, the first lost in love and hate for her brother's beauty, the second seeing it as an adornment for herself. Into this small, obsessed universe come a blind boy and an elegant fop from the outside world. At once, the pattern breaks and events move forward to a terrifying denouement. Featured Review: I can honestly say that I am thrilled to see Karim Hussain making movies. His early effort, the incredibly dark and f*cked up Subconcious Cruelty, was a fascinating film and offered some unique and some very horrifying images. With his French-Canadian family drama La Belle Bete, he has created a nicely structured picture which translates to “The Beautiful Beast”. And yes, there are some beastly moments in this drama. Cruel, angry and downright murderous elements in a family on the verge of self-destruction.
