SITE OF THE MONTH: Pattinson Online Print E-mail

Some of the most amazing and beautiful sites on the net are created by fans of movie stars. As a webmaster, I have some idea of how difficult it is to create a website - design and development wise. It is equally important to have dedicated people who will manage the site and update it with fresh, interesting content. In salute to some of the best fansites out there, The Movie-Fanatic is launching its first Fansite of the Month.

As you know Robert Pattinson first came into prominence in the Harry Potter series (The Goblet of Fire to be precise). As the doomed Cedric Diggory, he was one of the most popular students at the school of wizards. He was also a great competitor. While the billing and the money went to Daniel Radcliffe, Pattinson began to make a name for himself and soon became one of UK's most sought-after actors.

There are a number of fansites featuring Mr. Pattinson and one of them is our fansite of the month. We asked the Pattinson Online team some questions about how they started, how they manage the website, and much more:

tMF: How did you start doing the site? What's the story behind the
Robert Pattinson Online website? Who are the people working behind its success?

Pattinson Online: Joy started the site in November 2005 after following Rob's progress during the filming of Goblet of Fire. The site started small, hosted by a free service, but as it grew, it was moved to its own domain and more staff members were hired to keep up with the increasing workload. Isabel soon
joined as second-in-command and Tara came on board as a newsposter and then became senior staff. The three of us are friends first and fans second, a
combination that has kept us going strong for over two years.

tMF: What would you consider the most fun/enjoyable part of operating the
website? What's the most difficult?

PO: We love being a part of the fandom and sharing the excitement of his career
with the fans. It gets difficult when news is slow, but we work hard at being creative and keeping the site interesting for the fans.

tMF: In operating the site, what sort of technical skills are important?
Image/graphics editing, code/html/php, email, announcements, research - what would you say about these tasks and how important are they in maintaining a
website?

PO: We do all of our own work on the site, including coding and design. A basic knowledge of html is important in running a quality fansite, at least to keep it updated and professional-looking. There are plenty of amazing designers out there who will design and code a fansite for reasonable prices, so a webmaster doesn't necessarily have to be that creative, but if a site isn't organized and professional, it won't go far. The most important part of a fansite is keeping the content fresh and up-to-date.

tMF: Did Mr. Pattinson comment or send 'feelers' saying he is aware of the
website? Any exciting news for the fans?

PO: We have kept in contact with Rob over the past two years, and he is very
aware of our site. We've sent him several packages and multiple letters, and we've gotten nothing but positive responses from him. He is very appreciative of his fans.

tMF: How different/unique is the website compared to other fansites out
there?

PO: It's hard to make a unique website when there are so many out there, but we
have really worked hard to maintain strong relationships with filmmakers and photographers, as well as with other webmasters and fans. We keep our content up-to-date and our layouts fresh, and we've also spent a lot of time making sure our gallery is stocked with quality pictures.

tMF: Any advice to fans who want to launch a site of their own dedicated to a
fave actor/actress?

PO: Content and professionalism are key. If you're serious about your fansite, you have to be prepared to dedicate the time and stick with it even through the slow times. Hire reliable staff members and keep working hard.

tMF: What are some of your future plans in relation to the site?

PO: The three of us have followed Rob's career since the beginning and we want to support him for as long as we can. We'll keep doing what we do best, relaying the most up-to-date news and photos to the fans, while continuing to create professional relationships with people in the "business".

A Nice Show of Support!
Jed, this is a great idea for us to launch a new 'site of the month' feature! I must also commend you and tMF, that its also great to see us show support like this for other different movie/actor/actress sites out in cyberspace. I've been on MANY different websites throughout the years, and have witnessed alot of nasty comments and outright jealousy talked about and against other fansites. Often it seems, some sites loose sight of the reasons why they started sites and fansites in the first place--as a fan and for fans, but yet sometimes it seems it ends up becoming more about money, power trips, or getting attention. My apologies for the rant (*blush*).

It was nice and interesting to read your interview with the Robert Pattinson site. Congrats again, on a great idea and show of support for similiar websites such as ourselves! Looking forward to seeing what site will be featured each month here on tMF. Oh, and may I also add the same sentiments and great idea about our 'blog of the month' feature as well.
