Long before mainstream audiences got to know Paul Dano as the quirky and unforgettable teenager Dwayne in Little Miss Sunshine, tMF had spotted some of his earlier films and had earmarked this young actor as a talent to watch. - - -
- - - In the coming-of-age film L.I.E., Dano was superb as Howie Blitzer, a 15-year-old Long Island boy who became involved in a relationship with a much older man following the loss of everyone and everything he knew. Hot on the heels of the success of this film, he went on to star in such topnotch features as The Ballad of Jack and Rose, The Girl Next Door, Fast Food Nation and The King. In the upcoming There will be Blood, which is based on the book Oil! by Upton Sinclair, Dano will again portray an unforgettable character. Eli Sunday is a charismatic young preacher who captivates churchgoers in a small town on the verge of becoming rich following the finding of oil. Daniel Day Lewis will play a rich tycoon, and together the two characters will take on the issues of family, greed, religion and oil in turn-of-the-century America. This is not the first time the actors have appeared on screen together as they previously starred in The Ballad of Jack and Rose. Dano will also be seen in two upcoming films, including: Explicit Ills: the first feature film from Mark Webber. Paul will star together with fellow young actors Lou Taylor Pucci and Rachel Nichols. The film is an ensemble piece centering around various people living in Philadelphia. It shows in brutal honesty the effects of love, drugs, and poverty in day to day life and asks the question “Can I make a difference?” Where the Wild Things Are: a film adaptation of a Maurice Sendak picture book. The film concerns the imaginary adventures of a young boy named Max, who gets angry after he is sent to his room without supper. He then creates a forest inhabited by many large imaginary monsters, who crown him their ruler. Paul is also rumored to be part of The Stanford Prison Experiment. The film is a drama based on an experimental psychological study of human responses to captivity and its behavioral effects on both the authorities and inmates. It was conducted in the summer of 1971 at Stanford University. Undergraduate students assumed the roles of both prison guards and inmates. Within a single day, the psychological profiles of the students changed, and the interaction between prisoners and guards grew violent. When the prisoners staged a revolt, the study was immediately shut down. This drama-thriller may also star such talents as Ryan Philippe, Channing Tatum, Charlie Hunnam and Giovanni Ribisi. A German film, entitled Das Experiment and starring Moritz Bleibtreu tackled the same subject in 2001. The film went on to win awards on the international festival circuit. |
