WHY, MR JACKSON? Ryan Gosling is out of The Lovely Bones! PDF Print E-mail

We're probably one of the biggest fans of Ryan Gosling - not only because he's a talented actor, but also because of his active involvement in a number of worthy causes. While waiting for the release of his new film Lars and the Real Girl, we've been following news about his role in the upcoming The Lovely Bones. So it came as a big surprise when Variety reported that Gosling is no longer part of the cast...

"One day before shooting began, Mark Wahlberg stepped in to replace Ryan Gosling in "The Lovely Bones," the Peter Jackson-directed adaptation of the Alice Sebold novel for DreamWorks.

Wahlberg has taken the role of Jack Salmon, the grieving father of a young girl. That role was vacated Friday by "Lars and the Real Girl" star Ryan Gosling, who stepped out after gaining 20 pounds and growing a beard for the job. Sources attributed the exit to creative differences. "

Creative differences? What kind of a crappy explanation is that? Can they be more specific? I know for certain that Mr. Gosling does speak his mind. It's not often that we hear of actors taking a more aggressive stance in the production of a film and taking an active part in the creative process. Edward Norton certainly has had his share of controversy. Perhaps these 'creative differences' are similar to Norton's situation in American History X?

"Controversy developed over the film when director Tony Kaye attempted to remove his name from the credits, preferring to use the pseudonym Alan Smithee. When this was refused he chose "Humpty Dumpty" as an alternative pseudonym, which in turn was also rejected. Kaye alleged that his reasoning for this was Edward Norton's re-editing of the film to give himself more screen time."

Of course, Mr. Peter Jackson is a much bigger director than Kaye. If he bought the rights to adapt Alice Sebold's book into a movie, he would certainly want to do it according to his own vision for the story. Perhaps Ryan just got in the way of that?

I loved this story so much but I must confess I had trouble envisioning Ryan in the role of the father from the start, maybe because he is so much younger than the character in the book. I'm guessing here, but that dad has to be at least in his early 40s or so. Mark Wahlberg at 36 is almost ten years older than Ryan, who is 26. Maybe the fatted-up, bearded Ryan didn't age enough for PJ, who is a director who usually makes really good choices! Remember the same thing happened with LOTR, when Viggo replaced a younger man AFTER filming started, and what a triumph that turned out to be!
I still want Ryan!

I think you have a point there, and a number of online pubs have already made comments and started making assumptions.

The New York Post, not a really reliable paper, but quite popular with the gossipy crowd says:

Peter couldn’t stand Ryan,’ said one source. Though Variety reported that Gosling had “stepped down” and was replaced by Mark Wahlberg, our source said, ‘Ryan cut his own hair, and was fighting with wardrobe. He was so demanding . . . Peter booted him two days before filming started.

I find this pathetic and lacks the kind of credibility reserved for the more reputable newspapers. Its sad what people will do in order to maintain an audience. Its plain crap, IMO.

There is already a discussion from one of the more high-density sites like slashfilms, where most of the post are quite amusing to say the least. Says /film, quoting the LA Times:

Jackson was still expecting some movie star allure — not paunch and a beard.

While Mark Wahlberg is a good, credible actor, I also think that Ryan Gosling can add a certain charisma to the film.

I also don't agree with this opinion:

Gosling is a great actor, with a lot of potential, but it seems like he’s letting the critical acclaim get to his head. A director directs, and an actor acts.

Its sad to assume that Ryan would simply become self-conscious of his becoming 'critically acclaimed' and demand more say with the making of a film. For one, the guy is quite a private person and while he does speak his mind, I think the opportunity to work with Peter Jackson is something any good actor would look forward to.

There can be no conclusion to this unless their official announcement of 'creative differences' is further explained. Anyway, it would be LOVELY to see Ryan in another quality film soon!
Irritative!

"Creative differences" always sound like some kind of mudslinging took place before the work relationship ended. We can only speculate here, that's true.

I don't know Ryan Gosling long enough to comment on his professional behaviour really, but I admire him as an actor and I appreciate the work he did in his movies.

I always saw Edward Norton as a creative and professional actor/director and reading about the differences with Kaye irritative me. Mr. Norton does not sound like a person who only wants to increase his screentime withtout keeping the whole movie in mind, and I generally trust him and his work.
I gotta say that I love "American History X" the way it is, but I do not know the version Kaye had in mind.

So, yeah, creative differences are irritative. One does not know the true motives and so it might be not be understandable for the audience.

It's sad we won't see Gosling in this movie, but I'm sure we'll see him in other great one. smilies/wink.gif
Gosling Comments About \'Bones\'!

Culture Pop - Your Celebrity Questions, Answered Daily

Q. Did Lord of the Rings guru Peter Jackson fire Ryan Gosling just before filming was to start on The Lovely Bones?

A. Gosling did indeed leave the production based on the hugely popular bestselling novel. His role as the father of missing Susie Salmon now goes to Mark Wahlberg. Gossip reports have thrown out an avalanche of rumors about his departure, ranging from he was "too difficult" for Jackson to work with to the twenty pounds he gained for the role made him look too fat.

Ryan wasnt hiding behind a "no comment" when I asked what really happened. "I think, people are making it a far more interesting story than it actually is," he says. "The age of the character versus my real age was always a concern of mine. Peter and I tried to make it work and ultimately it just didnҒt. I think the film is much better off with Mark Walhberg in that role. Peter Jackson is an incredible filmmaker and Im here to tell you that he has things up his sleeve that are going to blow peoplesҒ minds. Im going to be the first person in line to buy tickets."

As for the report that he was difficult to work with, Gosling says, "The media always slant things in a negative direction. If somebody said I was easy to work with, theyҒd make that sound bad, too."

In the meantime, Ryan is basking in the good buzz surrounding Lars and the Real Girlno objectivity hereחits one of my favorite films of the year. Go see it before everyone tells you about it.

Of course, I asked him what's next and got a very sincere "havenҒt decided!"

Peace doesn\'t sell... *sigh*

Good to read this. Mr. Gosling is a professional and it's nice he took his time to comment on something as "unspectacular" as this.

Apparently, "creative differences" don't have to be of nasty origins. But unfortunately plain stories like this don't sell... :roll
Shame on you!

Not many people are blessed with the opportunity to enter a deeply rewarding and exciting career. In the case of Michael Angarano, it has been like that since he was 5 years old.
