The Next Big Things?: Maybe... Print E-mail

Cinematical and AOL's Moviefone recently launched their "Hollywood's Next Big Things"- a list of top actors and actresses and the upcoming young stars who might be following their footsteps...says Moviefone:

"Predicting the future's not easy, especially in Hollywood. But with the impressive young 'uns on the big screen these days, we can make educated guesses. As in, the up-and-comer who may be the next Brad Pitt. Or Jodie Foster. We pair the brightest new stars with the A-listers whose footsteps they may follow"

For instance: John Krasinski is the said to be the next Tom Hanks, while Shia LaBeouf is the next Harrison Ford...

While it seems amusing to a certain extent, we thought that the only 3 actors that are really talented and have that elusive star-quality are Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emile Hirsch and James McAvoy.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (photo taken from corbis.com) gets better and better. He made such impecable choices in his roles-from Mysterious Skin to Manic to Brick to the Lookout, Levitt is certainly capable of matching Edward Norton (the star he is compared to) in the acting department.

James McAvoy, who was snubbed at the Oscars, for his amazing performance in the Last King of Scotland, was compared to Ewan McGregor. Unlike McGregor who has made a successful transition into Hollywood, McAvoy prefers to make films in the UK.

Young actor and heartthrob Emile Hirsch, who will be seen in a couple of new projects this year and the next (including Sean Penn's Into the Wild and Speed Racer), is compared to Al Pacino. While Alpha Dog was trashed by critics, Hirsch was quite impressive in The Lords of Dogtown and before that, he was incredible in The Mudge Boy.

Also on the list is former male model Channing Tatum. He was quite impressive in Dito Montiel's A Guide to Recognizing your Saints, and made quite an impression in Coach Carter. There are a number of new projects up his sleeves and he might become a really big star in the near future. With his smashing good looks, he is compared in the list as the next Brad Pitt. Not bad, not bad at all...

Abbie Cornish and Amy Adams are also very fine young actresses and we are excited to see more of their upcoming projects (with future tMF profiles in the works....)

Emile + Sean Penn
Hi man! yeah Emile's new film by Sean Penn sounds interesting. He's quite busy, after Alpha Dog, and another film Speed Racer seems to be getting lots of media mileage. Though I prefer this one, it's more of the kind of films we feature here! smilies/cool.gif

I Agree With Your Top 3 Actors Jed!
I would have to agree with your choice of the top 3 most talented actors as well Jed, out of those mentioned in the Moviefone list. I think JGL especially, they were right on in their description of him being gifted, versatile, and fearless. So very true.

I have not seen any of James McAvoy's movies, but I did hear that his performance in Last King of Scotland was incredible. I am interested in his upcoming movie, Atonement. Sounds interesting.

I was not all that familiar with Emile Hirsch or his movies, but thanks to you Jed and tMF site, there are now quite a few of his movies that I would really like to see.

I don't know much about Channing Tatum or seen any of his movies. One of his new projects, he's acting alongside JGL in the upcoming film Stop Loss, about soldiers fighting in Iraq. I can see how Channing would be compared to Brad Pitt, in the looks department.

It so happens I seen the trailer for Into the Wild last weekend, when I went to see A Mighty Heart, and I just had to find out all I could on this movie! Just to also let everyone know, I posted a little feature on Into the Wild over on tMF forum, along with the movie trailer, for those who may be interested. I think Hirsch will really get noticed in this role, cause it looks like an awesome and compelling movie. Variety is even giving some early Oscar buzz on this movie.

Redge, that link you gave was great, thanks so much! It so happens that just the other night I read the authors story based on his book on the Outside website, and what a compelling read it was! The line that really got to me was when Christopher's parents said about his son, "how could a kid with so much compassion, cause his parents so much pain?".

I also posted over at the forum, a Q&A with Emile, talking about filming Into the Wild, that's quite interesting as well. I really hope I can get to see this movie.

mighty heart!
Its great you mentioned Mighty Heart. I think Angelina Jolie did a fine, fine job portraying the role of Daniel Pearl's wife, she was quite fearless and very intelligent...its a pity Mr. Pearl was made an example, when he was one of those who truly understood the situation in the middle east...its really a tragedy.

As for Emile Hirsch, as usual, you got all the news and tidbits, thank Jan! I had watched a number of his fils already- from the time he was just a teen actor- The Mudge Boy, The Emperor's Club...he's quite an actor, really!

I don't know much about Channing Tatum or seen any of his movies. One of his new projects, he's acting alongside JGL in the upcoming film Stop Loss, about soldiers fighting in Iraq. I can see how Channing would be compared to Brad Pitt, in the looks department.

I knew of Channing Tatum coz we made a short interview with him years back at Modelwatch. He was a very successful male model, who got to model for some of the biggest fashion houses, and he's quite intelligent, no wonder he is making great in the movies.

ModelWatch: Male Modeling on a Global Scale

I think Joe Levitt will get more and more recognition, his role in the Lookout was so impressive, he also had the tendency to choose his roles. he's definitely one of the best young actors today.

A Mighty Heart
I liked A Mighty Heart, and thought Angelina gave a very good performance. The one thing I sort of picked up on a little bit is that the real woman was french, and you would have thought Angelina would have maybe spoken french a bit more to make it more realistic sort of speak. Perhaps its just me that thought that, LOL....I really only remember one line she said in french in the movie (when the reporter asked her a specific question about the video of her husband). She responded angrily to the reporter in french. Where I figured she would have spoken french the most, is when her french brother came to comfort her and he was talking to her in french, but she didn't respond to him really (perhaps it did happen that way in real life). As I said, its probably just me that sort of picked up on that....but Angelina was quite good in the role I thought, and it was obvious she wanted to portray the real woman convincingly. Angelina is a good actress, but I find these days, her relationship with Brad often seems to overshadow her acting roles sometimes. She certainly does alot of great humanitarian work.

This story was such a tragedy indeed, and just horrible to have to hear the details of Mr. Pearl's death in the movie as well. His wife was certainly a strong woman indeed. So heartbreaking.

Chances are I may have seen Emile Hirsch on TV and not realize it, since I noticed he starred in a few TV shows like ER and NYPD Blue. The movies you mentioned look interesting as well. Even though I'm not into skateboarding, I'd want to see Lords of Dogtown to see Emile and Heath Ledger too of course! I know critics sort of panned Alpha Dog, but I thought it looked good, and its also quite a compelling true story as well.

Jed, I tried to find the interview you mentioned you did with Channing Tatum on your Modelwatch site, but couldn't find it.

Rumor has it that the industry is eyeing Joe Levitt to take over the Spiderman franchise...I sort of have mixed feelings about Joe being the next Spiderman, but that's just my opinion.

I recently read an interview with Joe, and he made the comment that money is never his main reason for doing movies, which is nice to hear. Joe certainly chooses his roles very carefully and wisely, it seems similar to Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Joe as Spidey?
People may have different views about 'selling out' or when an actor actually chooses to make a film for the money attached to it, and if he retains his sense of independence, and being the artist that he wants to be. I think many would jump into the opportunity to play the role, even Jake was considered when the producers were reported to have some issues with Tobey. Anyway, I would love to see Joe do more indie films, like his recent The Lookout, he's quite an amazing actor and to see him perform roles like Sipderman, it seems to lessen his 'mystery' but its just me, like you I prefer to watch credible, intelligent films, but sometimes movies like Spiderman are nice to see from time to time...but I prefer small indie films...

I'll have Channing's interview posted here, together with his profile...!

oh my! James!
hey Jed! finally got the chance to register! my the site looks gooood! McAvoy is Scotish and very talented, so they finally put some names other than Americans :grin
if you might have observed, most of today's successful actors came from either the UK or Australia...just a thought. 'we' must be doing somethin right here, training all these bunch of lads in theatre, so they come prepared for films.
there are some amazing acting schools here, like RADA for instance, and the agencies really take care of the talents. Ben Whishaw should have been listed here too!
Janell Edmunds , July 13, 2007
No chance?
Hi Janell, great to have u back! There is no chance I think for other talented young actors to make the list, for one, its made by moviefone, so they must have concentrated on rising stars/up-coming talents in Hollywood, and may have included some, but yes, I think Whishaw should have been there- more of Al Pacino's counterpart if I may say so. Emile Hirsch is a terrific actor, but then it comes to intensity and ability to really transform himself into the role, I think Whishaw is one of today's most talented actors.

I think he deserved more recognition, and to think he has been casted by some of the most innovative directors today (he'll be playing Keats, aside from the brideshead revisited role), so....

Oh yes, and Gaspard Ulliel! I think he's the most exciting young actor from France today.

I can go on with the list, August Diehl from Germany is another topnotch actor.

Ben and Ryan Missing From List!
People may have different views about 'selling out' or when an actor actually chooses to make a film for the money attached to it, and if he retains his sense of independence, and being the artist that he wants to be. Hey Jed....I certainly agree with you there, I too would like to see Joe in more indie films, of which he does his utmost best acting in I think. I totally get what your saying that perhaps in a way, taking on franchise type roles like Spiderman would perhaps not seem as challenging acting wise sort of speak. Also, these franchise roles actors often are asked to do sequels as well. Also often in these movies, the special effects seem to take more of a center stage in a sense. Like you mentioned, movies like Spiderman are good to check out from time to time.

It's really only been these last couple of years, that I too much prefer indie films. IMO, I find indie films are more realistic about real life alot of times, and I can relate more. Yet, many people much prefer to see the big blockbuster movies to escape their real lives I guess--at least that's what I've heard some say.

Look forward to see Channing's profile, thanks Jed!

Hi Janell, welcome! So very true, the site is looking mighty fine indeed. Jed is doing an awesome job!

I agree as well, that Ben Whishaw should have been on the Moviefone list....and let me go one step further to also say that Ryan Gosling should have been included as well.
Jan , July 17, 2007
Ryan!
Oh Jan, yes! If there is another Al Pacino, it should be Ryan!

I think Gosling has a lot of new projects coming up to further cement his position as one of the most talented young actors today. He's so active with his new band and the many social activities- like the drive to help the people of Darfur and the child soldiers of Africa.

If he ever think of directing, like Joe Levitt, then we're in for a treat!
Admin , July 17, 2007
not impressed...
I'm must say I'm not impressed with Emile Hirsch, I saw Alpha Dog and for me its Anton Yelchin who did well. Joe Levitt is a good actor and McAvoy, though I would say ben Whishaw has more charm than McAvoy, but that's just me...

Channing Tatum interview? wow, can you post that soon? that would be something 2 look forward to!

Iread your review of half nelson, I'm planning to watch it this week, it seems like a good film!
