Written by Jed Medina
Monday, 06 October 2008

Andrew Garfield already won Best Actor for this movie at the BAFTAs. He certainly deserved the award and tMF considers Garfield as one of the most talented among the British actors currently invading Hollywood. Here's another great news for the film!

According to Screen Daily, Boy A has won another award:

John Crowley's Boy A picked up the top Hitchcock d'Or prize among four awards at the 19th Festival du Film Britannique de Dinard.

The film, which stars Peter Mullan and Andrew Garfield, won the Grand Prix Jury - The Hitchcock d'Or; the Grand Marnier trophy for best screenplay for Mark O'Rowe; the Prix Kodak for Rob Hardy's cinematography; and the Hitchcock d'Argent 'Le Prix Premier du Public', awarded to the public's favourite film of the festival.

Movies in 2008: Best performances from young actors, Part 1 of a 3 Parts Series
Written by Jed Medina
Monday, 06 October 2008
I was having some serious thoughts that perhaps last year was a better year for movies, especially when it comes to performances by some of our favorite young actors. But as I look at the list of movie releases this year, I find a couple of awesome performances that we at tMF loves to celebrate.

- - -

For the first half of the year some of the coolest acting I've seen were from Jamie Bell in Jumper, Anton Yelchin as the cool young dude in Charlie Bartlett, the gang at Cloverfield, the powerful and unforgettable performance of Eddie Redmayne in Savage Grace, Gabe Nevins in Gus van Sant's Paranoid Park, Louis Garrel in Love Songs and the trio of Ryan Philippe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum in Stop-Loss. Here's more of the guys after the jump!

BEN WHISHAW Confirms Doing 'The Tempest' + More On Ben!
Written by Jan Jeffrey
Monday, 06 October 2008

tMF recently reported the rumor that Ben Whishaw might be attached to the upcoming Shakespeare film, 'The Tempest'. It is now confirmed by Whishaw himself in a recent interview while promoting Brideshead Revisited. He says he is set to start shooting his scenes this coming January 2009. Whishaw is to play the character Ariel in the Shakespeare comedy. The movie is to be directed by Julie Taymor.

IMDb via WENN is also reporting more casting news for The Tempest, to also include Dame Helen Mirren - who is to take on the role of Prospero. Geoffrey Rush is also rumored to be playing the role of Gonzalo. Below is the YouTube video interview of a very soft spoken and charming Ben Whishaw promoting his latest, Brideshead Revisited, which includes towards the end of the interview, his confirmation in which he is set to start filming The Tempest.

tMF WEEKLY TOP 3: Who's making the biggest buzz among your favorite young actors?
Written by Jed Medina
Monday, 06 October 2008

Every Monday, tMF gives you a rundown on who's making the biggest buzz among the current crop of young talents, based on the hottest news about upcoming movies, awards and nominations, magazine covers and interviews, and special appearances on festivals, talk shows and upcoming TV series or just from anything that make fans more excited about movies!

[ Note: I skipped last week's weekly top 3 for the simple reason that tMF launched the Top 50 Hottest Young Actors. Now that the articles have been posted and commented on by lots of viewers, it's time to get back to the weekly top 3! ]

Some rants: Tom Sturridge is apparently in the running for the top 3 with a new movie to boot! Same goes with the charming and talented Jamie Bell. These two amazing young Brits will certainly hug the limelight more as we move into the last quarter of the year. Stay tuned for our updates on both young actors' profiles here at tMF!

Now to the top 3!

First time ever to capture the third spot, please welcome to the list the young and talented Rupert Grint!

The Buzz: With two new movies on his sleeves, Rupert is going big-time! Fans are definitely on the look out for the new Harry Potter movies next year, but Grint is not relaxing a bit, his two new features Cherrybomb and Wild Target will surely keep him busy this year and the next! Here's one of the latest interview conducted by MTV for Rupert:

Because Grint’s character is trying to be a bad boy to impress the girl, he loses himself in that — “she likes that, so she likes him.” Stealing a car wasn’t that big of a leap, especially because all he has to do is swipe the keys. “Why do my movies always involve illegal things with cars?” he laughed, referring to his last independent film “Driving Lessons” and the infamous flying car from Harry Potter. “I’m not that into driving that I’d ever actually steal a car,” he laughed. “Never.” Grint got a “little love scene” that’s a little more adult than the one he had in “Driving Lessons,” he said, “which was quite awkward to film, with the whole crew watching. They’re in bed!” But the real adult subject matter, Grint said, is what happens afterwards — which he didn’t want to spoil. “It gets quite serious,” he said. “It gets a bit crazy. Really violent and out of hand and lethal at the end.”

Capturing the second spot for the first time is Shia Labeouf. With half a mil salary, Labeouf is definitely enjoying a career high. Recent incidents seem to highlight how much people are interested in getting to read news about the young actor.

The Buzz: His latest movie Eagle Eye just reached the $50 million mark at the box office. While a lot of the critics lambasted the movie, still Shia manages to show his Box Office appeal and power to bring in the audience! Way to go Shia!

What we said a few weeks back and still applies today: Perhaps some of the more serious fans have watched LaBeouf's older and better movies- A Guide to Recognizing your Saints, Holes, The Greatest Game Ever Played. I mean the guy can act. It would be sad to relegate him into predictable, formulaic movies that you'll automatically forget once you leave the theater. The good news now is that he's about to do a rather intriguing character in Dark Fields. We recently blogged him on this new flick from filmmaker Neil Burger, the same guy who gave us Edward Norton's The Illusionist. In this new movie Shia is to play "an intellectual slacker and former cocaine addict". It goes deeper and darker when Labeouf's character discovered he's in possession of a new drug, with some very curious effects. I think the role is perfect for him.

Back at the top spot is no other than Robert Pattinson.

The Buzz: A lot of buzz actually. Let me list down why he's the hottest young actor right this minute. First, he's number 1 at tMF's Hottest Young Actors list. Second, he just won his first Best Actor award at the Strasbourg International Film Festival! Third, he just got another award this time from Yahoo Movies! Here's more:

Robert Pattinson has been chosen by the Hollywood Film Festival Award Committee as the recipient of this year’s New Hollywood Award. He, along with other honorees and winners, will receive their awards during the gala ceremony on October 27, 2008.

Finally, tMF just launched its very own promotional blitz site for his awesome movie, How To Be. To visit the site click here! Oh, and another thing, quite important for tMF. We're launching Rob's exclusive profile featuring a rundown of his movies, personal tidbits and review quotes and a lot more. Stay tuned! It's going to be quite a week!

tMF Featured Trailers: La Belle bête and Life for Sale
Written by Jed Medina
Saturday, 04 October 2008

It's actually not too hard to look for unusual 'under the radar' films. You just need to have lots of patience and be familiar with those movie distribution sites that feature lots of trailers, plus be aware of who's making waves - - especially those who are winning 'breakthrough' awards in their own countries.

Life for Sale: Swiss star Joel Basman was recently chosen as one of this year's European Shooting Stars for his performance in Life for Sale (Luft Business). Says the jury:

Basman's portrayal of a young dropout looking to make an easy living in the surreal but entertaining LUFTBUSINESS led the judges to comment that the actor has "freshness and vitality, with the promise of much to come".

But don't just take their word, see the trailer below. I love the music and there is something truly 'surreal' about this film, as the jury thought.

- - -

Review from Festival Daily: LIFE FOR SALE aims to extend some deep-meaning messages to its audience. But it also forces you to think long and hard about what exactly it's trying to say. It's certainly a commentary on modern society, and seemingly faith and spirituality too. Or maybe it's more about inequality and desperation. It's difficult to say; there are a lot of big issues being tackled, but we're left without firm conclusions on any of them. This is no reason to dismiss the film however; perhaps the point is, in the end, that there are no definitive answers.

tMF Puts the SPOTLIGHT on Eddie Redmayne and his best movie, Savage Grace!
Written by Jed Medina
Saturday, 04 October 2008
There are a couple of things you should know about Eddie Redmayne. One of them is that he's been recognized for his talents on stage - - appearing in Edward Albee's The Goat Or Who Is Sylvia?, for which he won best newcomer at the Evening Standard theatre awards in 2005. Aside from acclaims in theater, the 26 year old British actor gave a couple of impressive performances on the big screen - - I'm particularly impressed with Redmayne in Like Minds, The Good Shepherd and Savage Grace.

tMF spotlight review: Savage Grace

I've watched Savage Grace a couple of times already, and still I can't help but be impressed with Redmayne. Aside from Julianne Moore's mesmerizing performance, it was Eddie who really took over the movie and made it his own.

If you've read a couple of film reviews that trashed this movie, then rest assured it’s a better movie than what you've heard so far. The problem with those reviews is that they failed to consider the logic behind the ‘slowness’ of the film and that goes with the characters as well - - being unsympathetic or ‘inhumane’ and all that!

But before I go any further, let me quote the IMDb plot summary for an intro of sorts…

Savage Grace is the true story of the beautiful and charismatic Barbara Daly, who married above her class to Brooks Baekeland, heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune. Their only child is a failure in his father's eyes, and as he matures and becomes increasingly close to his lonely mother, the seeds for tragedy are sown.

*** Spoilers Ahead ***

Barbara Daly (played by Julianne Moore) is a lonely, selfish human being who married one of the richest men, Brooks Baekeland (Stephen Dillane). It was not a happy marriage, and in due course, they both began to hate each other. They had a son, Tony (Eddie Redmayne) who remains Barbara’s only happiness. Tony also happens to be Brooks’ major disappointment. You see, as Tony gets older, he shows signs that he’s gay.

THE FANDOM REPORT: The Robert Pattinson Phenomenon!

Once Pattinson’s performance ended, madness followed, right through into the early hours of Thursday morning. Fan posts of blurry pictures were copied and posted elsewhere; videos on youtube were taken without permission and placed on other websites. Even Perez Hilton took a video from our staff members and posted it on his blog. Accounts of the fans who attended spread like a computer virus through any site Rob-related. Obviously demand is high for Robert Pattinson.

What began as a normal Wednesday certainly didn’t end as a normal Wednesday. In fact, for some avid, hungry fans, Thursday’s work and school day wasn’t the most productive. The reason: 22-year-old Robert Pattinson.

News quickly diffused across the net that Pattinson was performing at Whiskey a Go Go, a quaint bar on the infamous Sunset Strip in the City of Angels. The fortunate fans who were within distance of the Whiskey quickly grabbed a friend and legged it to the bar. For one fan, persuasion was required to get her best friend to tag along for the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Apparently his beauty in real life cannot be justified in photo… His music is deeply personal even hearing it over the phone...

As for us other less lucky fans, a scavenger hunt of sorts ensued. Fans flocked to Twatlight, a sorority-type, semi-twilight related community, and Pattinson’s Internet Movie Database (IMDb) discussion board, in search of the latest updates about the night from those who had gone. One IMDb thread reached over 300 posts in less than three hours! The above quote is courtesy of Kristin, who operates the very popular and always up-to-date Spunk Ransom site. Kristin brilliantly arranged to have a correspondent's sister at the event, passing along exclusive updates and exciting details, all of which you can view (with pictures!) at their site!

In light of this, I have compiled a collection of accounts from various sources, which I will credit, and give a recap of the night!

MOVIE REVIEW: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Written by David DiMichele
Friday, 03 October 2008

Starring: Michael Cera, Kat Dennings
Director: Peter Sollett
Release Date: October 3, 2008
Running Time: 90 min
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Distributor: Sony Pictures Entertainment

Some movies just fade from the screen when they are through, but Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist transcends that as its radiant truth and naturalistic approach cuts deep through our toughest layer of skin. The characters jump off the screen and beg us to hug them. They don’t have to ask twice. There hasn't been a movie like this since Almost Famous captivated our emotions in 2000. Each film has similar main characters: a boy who is normal in appearance, but is thrown into a world rock stars and rich men. It’s on these characters that each film bases it's premise - simple and loveable people.
